Team Xbox Q&A: Randy, from the Xbox Avatars Team

For the latest Team Xbox Q&A, I chatted with Randy from the Xbox Avatars Team. I’ve partnered with Randy on several projects related to Xbox Avatars over the last few months and was excited for this opportunity to catch up. Here’s what he had to say:

Hi, Randy! Thanks for taking some time out of your busy schedule to chat with me. Mind letting our Xbox Insiders know what you currently do for Team Xbox?
Hello Savannah! Super excited to chat, especially for our Xbox Insiders! I’m currently the Senior Program Manager for the Xbox Avatars program for Xbox One and Windows 10.

And how long have you been with the company? Any other cool projects you helped with prior to the new Xbox Avatar Editor?
I’ve been with the company since 2004, so over 14 years now! I’ve been working on gaming technology for almost the same amount of time. Over the last 13 years I’ve worked on a bunch of features for console and PC, for core tech and games. For Xbox, I worked on technology including the Blades, Kinect, New Xbox Experience, and New Xbox One Experience. Aside from both generations of Avatars, I also worked on Bing Search for Xbox 360. I particularly liked Bing Search’s ability to find which video streaming service currently had a particular movie. I also worked on a few of the online features that went into Gears of War 2, Lips, Banjo-Kazooie Nuts & Bolts, and our Gaming SDKs (Software Development Kits).

Randy, Senior Program Manager, Xbox Avatars

How did the Xbox 360 Avatar system guide you and your team’s work with the new Xbox Avatar Editor? Was there any particular feedback you took from that era and used to guide your efforts?
We agreed very early that we wanted to bring the best parts of the Xbox Original Avatar, add to that expressive goodness, and make it better. Almost all of our changes were based on feedback collected over the last ten years. For example, we knew we wanted to get rid of gender specific clothing to give people more freedom to customize. We also wanted to add more skin color options for Avatars, and now we offer blue, green, and other creative hues. Other common requests included more inclusive body choices, different body shapes, more categories to customize, and more content in the Closet and Store. We took all that feedback to heart when we started working on the new Xbox Avatar character and Editor.

Our Xbox Insiders were some of the first community members to get their hands on the Avatar Editor. As a program, we were super excited to share such a cool feature early, but how has previewing the app since summer helped improve the overall product?
It’s helped us tremendously! Not only did we get feedback on the overall Avatar Editor (we really appreciate all the issues submitted from Report a problem!), but all the suggestions from the Xbox Insider community have been invaluable. For example, when we launched in the Xbox Insider Program, we just had a subset of the full collection of hair, tops, and bottoms available. However, we didn’t expect that hair and facial hair would be deemed the most important assets by Xbox Insiders. Because of this, we asked our content creation team to prioritize creating more hair and facial hair assets in response. Feedback like this has evolved the Avatar Editor and our character to a level we wouldn’t have been able to achieve without input from Xbox Insiders.

Everyone loves customizing their Avatar, including me – in fact, I was over the moon when I saw that overalls were an apparel option. As the PM of the new Xbox Avatar Editor, what’s your favorite Avatar accessory?
My favorite so far is a combination of the Frustrated Mood with the Soccer Ball Prop; seeing someone one so frustrated while still gleefully juggling a soccer ball makes me crack up every time. The Superhero Mood and the limited-edition Xbox Insider shirt are a very, very close second and…one other asset I can’t talk about yet!

Moving away from Avatars, are there any games you’re playing and really enjoying right now?
Since going digital I find that I swap between games often. I pick up a game or two at a time in Forza Horizon, Fortnite, Overwatch, Rocket League, all the Halos, and Rock Band with a back compat ION drumkit. I also love Overcooked but I’m awful at it, most games end with a frazzled rage quit, but I keep coming back!

One question we try to ask every member of Team Xbox is whether they’re particularly proud of any one achievement. So what about you, Randy, got any cool achievement stories to share?
Every single rare ‘chievo I got from Frozen Free Fall. To be fair, I think my favorite achievement was one I never got a chance to get: the Anonymous Red-Shirt Award from Star Trek: Legacy, awarded for the first player killed in a multiplayer game. I could never die quickly enough to grab it!

You’ve been, and remain, active on the Xbox Insider subreddit throughout the 1810 preview window. Is there anywhere else our audience can look out for you?
I’ll still be active on the Xbox Insider subreddit as RandyNoArms for a while. I can also be found on the Xbox and Xbox Reddit servers on Discord, as well as Xbox Live, using my Gamertag: Randy.

Thanks so much for chatting with us today, Randy, and for the awesome new Xbox Avatars!

Frantic Speedrunning Platformer Razed is Available Now on Xbox One

Razed is a lightning-fast platform racing game that’s all about speedrunning. Levels are littered with pitfalls, death traps and precision platforming. We’ve made the game challenging but here are our six most useful tips to help you get through without being razed.

1) If at first you don’t succeed retry, retry again

We learned early on in development that retrying a run with as little fuss as possible is essential. For this reason, we mapped Retry to a face button making it as accessible as jumping. No menus, no fuss, just instant retry action.

2) Keep moving

Your character has got power shoes locked on. Running builds up power. Standing still, going slowly or using abilities depletes power. Run out of power and you are blown to pieces! Keep track of your charge, if you see the charge indicator start flashing red you’re using too much power.

Razed Screenshot

3) Unlock abilities and take alternative routes

Yes, your shoes will explode if they run out of energy, but they can also do marvellous things like Drifting, Wall Running and much more! Complete levels to unlock your shoes’ hidden abilities and then use those new abilities to tackle levels that once seemed impossible, or revisit completed levels to discover new routes and get faster grades.

4) Discover hidden upgrades

There is an upgrade segment hidden in every level of Razed. You may be tempted to run through each level once and not look back. However, if you want to stand the best chance of beating Razed we recommend finding as many upgrade segments as possible. You need three segments to upgrade an ability. Once an ability is upgraded it will use less energy, freeing you up to perform trickier sequences without being blown to pieces.

Razed Screenshot

5) Learn from others

Once you have completed a level you will be able to load ghost data and race against your fastest friend, your best time, or the fastest player in the world. As well as being just plain fun you can use the ghosts to see the best routes through a level. If it looks like the ghost you are racing is doing some impossible things, it probably means you need to unlock or upgrade more abilities to compete against it. Try progressing further in the game to unlock new abilities and try going back to completed levels to find any upgrades that you’ve missed (the level select screen shows you which ones you have already found).

6) Exploit the environment

While demoing the game at a show we discovered players would often attempt to complete levels in ways that were not intended. Some creative shortcuts were found that we had never thought of. Instead of putting up invisible walls we made sure everything in a level could be collided with so players can exploit the environment however they like. This should lead to some really varied high scores.

We hope you’ll enjoy Razed on Xbox One. We have tried to make it as intuitive and addictive as possible!

5 Tips to Help Lara Succeed in Shadow of the Tomb Raider

The day Lara Croft fans have been waiting for is finally upon us with the release of Shadow of the Tomb Raider. The third and final game in Lara’s origin trilogy, Shadow of the Tomb Raider finds our intrepid adventurer doing her darnedest to stop a world-ending cataclysm at the hands of the nefarious Trinity. Shadow of the Tomb Raider shares plenty of elements with its predecessors, but there are a few new things to keep in mind as you play through the game. We are happy to share some of these tips here to help you make the most of your time in the jungles of Central and South America. Happy hunting!

Shadow of the Tomb Raider Screenshot

Craft and Use Herbal Mixtures

As you explore the jungles, you’ll find yourself coming across plenty of wild herbs that you can pick. Once you have the corresponding ability, you can use these herbs to craft mixtures that will give you an advantage in exploration or combat. You’ll earn the ability to create Health and Perception (which makes it easier to spot prey and enemies in the environment) mixtures as you play, but you’ll need to unlock Endurance and Focus mixtures by upgrading your way through the skill tree. These both come in extremely handy during combat, as Focus allows you to slow down time when aiming and Endurance greatly reduces the damage you’ll take from enemies. The jungle herbs are nothing if not plentiful, so it pays to pop mixtures as often as possible, especially before and during combat.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider Screenshot

Talk to Everyone You Meet

You’ll spend a lot of time in Shadow of the Tomb Raider’s two major hub areas, Kuwaq Yaku and Paititi. As you run around the areas and explore, you’ll come across a number of characters that you can talk to. Although some of these characters just want to make small talk, some of the other ones have more to offer. By talking to the people you meet, in some cases while wearing a particular outfit, you can learn about local areas of interest and secrets that you would not ordinarily be able to find. It’s a nice, organic way to open up the map for exploration, and it’s definitely necessary to chat up the locals if you want to achieve 100% completion.

Do the Side Missions

At first glance, it might not seem like the side missions in Shadow of the Tomb Raider are worth the effort. In the first couple of side missions, you’ll get a few rewards like weapons and non-essential gear, but that changes later in the game. In areas like Paititi and San Juan Mission, side missions will serve as a means to an end, allowing Laura to access Challenge Tombs and Crypts that she would not otherwise be able to find. Not only that, the side missions are quite good in many cases, offering up some compelling narratives and flushing out the world you spend so much time exploring.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider Screenshot

Learn Your Languages

While you’re playing Shadow of the Tomb Raider you’ll notice that you’ll come across Murals and items, including some documents and Relics, that will raise your ability to decipher the monoliths you find scattered around the world. There are three languages (Mam, Quechua, and Yucatc) to learn in Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and they’re definitely worth learning since the rewards for deciphering the monoliths are pretty solid. One thing to note is that there are no monoliths that require you to complete the language, as even the toughest ones for each language are only level two (Fluent). You don’t need to find everything in order to complete them all, though there is an achievement for completing at least one language.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider Screenshot

Spend Money to Make Money

Throughout most of Shadow of the Tomb Raider, you’ll earn whatever items you need to progress as you play. However, there are a couple of exceptions to this rule if you want to try tackling secret areas like Challenge Tombs and Crypts.  In order to have unfettered access to whatever areas you’d like to explore, you’ll need to plunk down some coin at the merchants you come across. The lockpick will allow you to open Conquistador treasure chests, while the Rope Ascender will allow you to yank down rope doors that you don’t have the strength to pull down.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider Screenshot

Want to start playing the Xbox One X Enhanced Shadow of the Tomb Raider today? Grab the Shadow of the Tomb Raider Croft Edition to jump right into the action with early access. If you’re patient, you can nab the Shadow of the Tomb Raider Digital Deluxe Edition or the Shadow of the Tomb Raider Standard Edition to start playing this Friday, September 14.
