The Epic Journey of Floor Kids, Available Now on Xbox One

It’s been quite the journey, and now it’s time for Floor Kids to launch on Xbox One. And to mark this occasion I wanted to write a personal note about this amazing experience and everyone I got to work with and learn from.

I’m JonJon, the animator and creator of the eight original characters in the game. To me, these characters represent me and my friends from a time when this world was my entire life. But they can also easily represent yourself and your friends in this current era, or from an era long ago. These characters shout out to the legends of the break scene that created all these movements as part of a rich and storied culture. The Floor Kids characters can come off as regular kids, but also possess the strength and stamina of super hero dance warriors of a funky animated world.

So, I want to share what I enjoyed most about this project and the people I’ve been collaborating with:

Ryhna Thompson

Our lead producer. The glue. She stood up for Floor Kids as a brand, from the inception, and at every turn, and protected our potential to go far. We were able to stay confident in ourselves, and patient, and kept Floor Kids as an artist-driven project for many, many years. She’s been the glue and stabilizing energy on the team. For something like a super long-term project like ours, even dating back to the first animated promo clip from over 10 years ago, keeping steady is no easy task.

Mike Wozniewski

Leader of Hololabs. My favorite part was watching him connect the sprites of my b-boy drawings manually, frame by frame, and getting involved in the decision making of what inputs would be needed at every branch in the animation system. Because in our philosophy, we opted to not have a generic transition system that makes use of an idle state or idle animation, because in breaking, that’s bad. True to the nature of this dance, I wanted to animate each transition uniquely between each move, between each step. Because that’s how it is in real life.

It was fun to see him really try to wrap his mind around break dance logic, which is vast and intricate, and understand the body physics taking place in each drawing, and figuring out programmable models and playback systems to describe attributes like momentum, flow, acceleration and slow motion strobing. Together we broke things down into categories that made sense to both the break logic and the coder logic. Programs and systems like to do things the same way every time. B-boys and B-girls want to do things differently every time.

Inherent in this, is a great challenge. How to program a game that represents an artform that is steeped in creativity, and originality. Seeing him ask questions like, “Can this frame stop?” Or, “Does this movement go continuously?” “Is this reversible or not reversible?” It was a thing of magic to see it gradually take form. There were so many fun tests and prototypes that we did, to see what controls would work and be fun. I’m proud of what we accomplished together.

Phil Rostaing

Our game designer for things like unlocking, progression, and figuring out a points system. He tackled the huge challenge of scoring. The challenge was that games need to present a clear goal. But in our case, there are multiple goals, and you get to choose which ones to tackle at any time. There’s freedom and skill required. He designed a fantastic and in-depth scoring system based off the real international five-point judging standard for break competitions.

The real-life system has five strategies to pay attention to and we flipped it for our game to make it Funk, Flavor, Flow, Fire, and Flyness. Each points system is simple enough to pick up on its own but factoring them all together requires mastery. I also traveled a lot with Phil to the game conventions. He was always down for road trips in a rental car, throwing the gear in the back seat. Spreading the game at every development stage to each new person one by one.

JoDee Allen

Our game designer for controls and rhythm. She tackled the controls originally slated for touch and then adapted for buttons and joysticks. Her controls were always tied to rhythm but also incorporating directionality. Finding the metaphors between the finger movements and the animation on screen. She was also a b-girl under the name of Feisty, with years of teaching under her belt. It was so fun working with her on this because the subject matter is so personal to us, and it was a way to revisit those memories.

Six Ascher

An early developer at Hololabs, taught me to open my mind to the concept of variable frame rates. As an animator from film my mind kept thinking in 24fps, but for this project we had to think in BPM (beats per minute). So, they taught me to let go of a rigid frame rate approach and to open myself up to a system that would tie my animation to the beat, whatever speed that would end up being. And it was really liberating to my animating process to be able to think this way.

Amesh Narsing

Our lead engineer. Respect to the architect! He came up with a super powerful idea. Rather than connecting the frames by hand, he laid the foundation for an animation fetch and play system that would locate the quickest path into a move. This was an exciting development which allowed me to decide many intricate things through the animation, on how moves would transition into one another, how many frames each move needed to be, where the hold poses were, where the in and out points would be.

The programmers and designers could focus on other important things, trusting me to deliver an animation move tree for each character that would leave room for player creativity, and wouldn’t crash the system. And so I opted to make as many unique transitions as possible, and to have enough of them in and out of each move to allow for player response time to feel right… bringing the drawing count up to the tens of thousands. Which nearly broke the system many times. By the end of the project, Amesh was learning to get down in the studio and six-step.

Roger Braunstein

Our junior engineer and programming spark plug. When he writes code, he talks out loud. So, we could all hear him play-by-play commentate on himself catching and zapping bugs in the system. I also witnessed Roger perfect the rhythm section at the Peace Summit, the hardest level in the game, on a first try – when we thought that would be impossible.

Eric San

Last but not least, DJ Kid Koala. Through his music and shows around the world, he’s kept the dream of Floor Kids alive all these years until the right opportunities hit. His brilliance is not just in the music and sound, but his vision, his jokes, and his wit. One of my favorite things in the game is the story — it’s a poem. Eric wrote something to be funny, and it came in at the last minute, in a flash of inspiration. It was written with cadence and wit. It speaks in a legendary yet playful tone but is also dropping hints about how the scoring system works. Each chapter of the story incorporates the theme of the location and describes a lesson for one of Funk, Flavor, Flow, Fire, and Flyness. Funny thing is that these lessons could also apply to our real lives.

He read it out loud and everyone was laughing, but what I heard, was something deeply meaningful, as I realized his story touched on the sentiment of everything I had drawn and tried to create.

So, he sends me all the story music tracks, and they were so goofy and silly, I laughed so hard because they sounded hilarious, and I knew what he was thinking… but I was like “A’ight. I’m going to try this other idea that I have.”

So, I came back with story panels for a huge journey traveler adventure drama, a serious quest through the city. Eric laughed at how epic the story panels had become. And he changed the whole music of the story sequence to make it super vast and intense. In the end, we laughed our heads off at the combination.

And so that’s a glimpse into our story as a team. Floor Kids is now on Xbox One. Now go build your crew and we hope you have fun!

Lovecraftian Horror Awaits in Achtung! Cthulhu Tactics, Available Now on Xbox One

I’m here today to share an insight into our turn-based tactical strategy game Achthung! Cthulhu Tactics, which launches today on Xbox One. Check out the launch trailer above for a closer look at the Lovecraftian horrors that await like tentacles, automatic weapons, creeping insanity, and the Third Reich into a journey into the unknown.

There are two common interests shared by everyone here at Auroch Digital: a love of strategy games and a deep admiration for the mythos of the American author H. P. Lovecraft. So when the opportunity to work with publisher Ripstone and the creators of the original Achtung! Cthulhu board game Modiphius came along, we couldn’t wait to get started. A year or so later and here we are at the end of the project, the whole studio poised to unleash our game to Xbox players across the world.

Acthung! Cthulhu Tactics

Acthung! Cthulhu Tactics

Acthung! Cthulhu Tactics tells the story of a rough and ready team of commandos and mercenaries. They are investigating reports that the Nazis are raising an occult army of unimaginable horror, bringing evil forces from indescribable non-euclidean dimensions to help them win World War II.

It’s a turn-based experience through forests, factories and underground installations where you’ll be battling both the Nazi forces but also Cthulhu’s own putrid and be-tentacled denizens. It’s quite the trip.

Acthung! Cthulhu Tactics

Acthung! Cthulhu Tactics

On Xbox One, Achtung! Cthulhu Tactics really comes into its own. The sensation of filling your living room with eldritch abominations while you strategize your attacks from the comfort of your own sofa is really the best way to play the game. As an awesome addition for Xbox One X owners, you’ll be able to play the game in magnificent enhanced resolution modes as an Xbox One X Enhanced title. And fear not Xbox One owners; on standard units, we’re still giving you crystal sharp 1080p mythos fuelled terror.

It’s not common for developers to offer a serving suggestion for their game, but if I may: light some candles, draw the curtains, and enjoy supernatural tactics action while these winter nights draw in. Soak up that atmosphere and feel the terror spreading across the globe as Achtung! Cthulhu Tactics launches on Xbox One today.

Behind the Creative Audio & Art for Thief of Thieves

Thief of Thieves: Season One is a game about heists and the people who do them, based on a comic by Robert Kirkman of “The Walking Dead” fame. The protagonist is Celia, the apprentice of the titular Thief of Thieves, Conrad “Redmond” Paulson. The game blends comic frames with gameplay featuring stealth and social engineering – after all, a great thief never uses violence. The game is now out on Xbox One and Xbox Game Pass. Our art and audio teams did a pretty awesome job, and here are a few words from our Audio Director and Art Director.

Tommi Hartikainen, Audio Director: Designing Thief of Thieves: Season One offered a unique yet welcome challenge in incorporating the graphic novel feel to the audio. Simultaneously creating a cohesive and comprehensive soundscape for the entire game while extending the same atmosphere from the comic frame scenes to the action sequences required careful planning and attention to detail.

Thief of Thieves

A heavily post-processed classical quartet plays in the graphic novel sections, menus and credits. It reflects the puppet-mastery of the main character’s mentor Conrad “Redmond” Paulson in a jesting but classy way. This feel is then extended to the player character’s “homebase” and certain key events to promote consistency and provide dynamic and textural contrast with the modern rock- influenced music within the action sequences. Bowed electric guitars with similar “sound-designy” post-processing are used as drones, with additional sound effects bridging the gap between the soundscapes of classical music and rock.

One of the technical challenges was spotting music and sound effects to the graphic novel parts of the game. Since the player controls the pace of the scenes, the musical segments had to be short and meticulously timed to the events in the comic frames. The sound effects were carefully selected to either include and/or omit sounds not visually portrayed in the graphics to create the same kind of high contrast storytelling found in the comic.

Thief of Thieves

KJ Kallio, Art Director: As someone whose background is in illustrating, coming up with a fresh and unique style for Thief of Thieves: Season One gave a perfect opportunity to think outside the box. Instead of following the beaten path of game art, we applied all the things we learned working within the illustration field, resulting in a look and feel that you rarely see in games. This approach had many advantages, along with some pitfalls.

Instead of using tiling or baked-in texture maps, every single character, object, backdrop, and detail have been meticulously hand painted with a heavy and expressive ink style and strong and vibrant colors. As a result no two levels look alike. This combined with the saturated, volumetric, bleeding lighting gave the scenes an almost dreamlike atmosphere. The goal was to make every scene and detail look like a painting, where the viewer could rest their eyes while marveling at the nuances of even the most ordinary and everyday objects.

Thief of Thieves

The toughest challenge was creating a seamless, coherent comic book style that works in the game world, while also being original. Objects viewed from several different angles had to be drawn with ink lines, rather than relying on toon shaders or cel shading. Painting everything piece by piece meant long hours at the office – especially with the major change in the overall visual style in the middle of the production, which meant everything done so far had to be painted again. In retrospect, we have no regrets.

Thief of Thieves: Season One is now available on Xbox One and Xbox Game Pass.

Beginner’s Guide to Youtubers Life OMG Edition

Hello everyone! We’re really happy because, after a long time, Youtubers Life OMG Edition is about to land on Xbox One.

When we started developing Youtubers Life, we knew we had to step up and improve the original formula. Thanks to the massive community feedback, we added new features added and vastly improved the GUI and controls, adapting them to PAD gameplay, all of this supported by tons of visual and playability improvements that make Youtubers Life OMG Edition the much-deserved version that our fans demanded.

Youtubers live exciting but demanding lives, that’s why we’d like to share some tips with you to successfully tackle your path to fame in this refined version of the game. Youtubers Life OMG Edition mixes tycoon and life sim genres where managing time, your subscribers wishes, and your own needs are key to achieve success.

Youtubers Life OMG Edition

One of your firsts decisions to make will be choosing your channel theme. You can talk about games and visit a gaming conference, or share songs and play shows, or create new recipes and display your culinary abilities in gastronomy competitions. Each channel has its own nuances, mini-games and missions, providing great replayability value.

As every aspiring Youtuber, you’ll start at your mom’s house (we don’t know about your father yet) being a complete unknown who makes videos for fun. In the beginning, uploading videos won’t be a great source of income, at least until you manage to grow your subscriber count… We recommend looking for temp work or taking commissions from people you can find at the disco or the cinema. There are lots of people willing to pay good money to unload video-making work!

In Youtubers Life OMG Edition we wanted to delve into the romanticized view of the fan-driven Youtuber. Now, you need to really take care of your followers by publishing social network content, attending events, uploading daily videos… so much stress! Fortunately, your collaborators can help you make videos, frequently uploading them to your channel. You can even record your experiences while attending events and upload those videos, your fans will love that!

Youtubers Life OMG Edition

When you’re done with your mom’s house internet connection speed (which takes ages to upload a single video), you’ll know the moment of moving with a friend has arrived, but be advised: your expenses will skyrocket! Be careful or you’ll end up living under a bridge! Before moving, save some money, improve your PC and take care of your friends. Don’t be in a hurry to move houses, although you’ll eventually need to change if you want your channel to grow – you’ll be happy to find out that each new house comes with its perks.

Reaching success in Youtubers Life OMG Edition is totally dependent on the decisions you make and improve by uploading videos and gaining subscribers. Adapt your play style thanks to the talent tree present on each type of channel, try different video types to get attention and accept commissioned work from commercial brands to earn big money! But be careful, your fans will get angry if you rely too much on paid work. You get to decide how to enjoy this highly-replayable and full of possibilities experience.

We believe Youtubers Life OMG Edition will be equally loved by those who have already played the game and those who were patiently waiting for release on Xbox One. We’re eager for all our fans to test this much-improved version, and we want you all to share your feedback with us! Vast is the Youtuber world and we want to keep working to offer the best and closest experience to what it means being an Internet celebrity.

Team Xbox Q&A: Katie, who works with Xbox Media

I took some time this week to catch up with Katie, a Program Manager who works with Xbox Media, whose name you might recognize from recent posts about Dolby Vision. Learn more about Katie, her work bringing Dolby Vision to the Xbox One and much more!

Katie Profile

Hi, Katie! Really appreciate you chatting with us; it’s awesome to get the chance to introduce you to our Xbox Insiders. Mind sharing what you do at Xbox?

Certainly!  I am a Program Manager on the SiGMA team, working on Xbox Media.  Basically, I help deliver top media experiences on Xbox through new features and external partner support.  Day to day, my role can include working with external partners (like Netflix and YouTube) to best support their apps on our platform, working with internal devs to fix various bugs or issues, or evaluating new features we would like to enable.

You recently worked with Dolby to bring Dolby Vision to consoles for the very first time! Can you tell us a bit about what that work looks like?

Bringing Dolby Vision support to Xbox was a really exciting and challenging project to work on.  When we started looking at this technology, no other game console had implemented Dolby Vision.  We worked extensively with Dolby to architect a solution to support their technology on our platform.  It also required a significant collaboration with Netflix in order to bring this new feature to their application.  This was a huge endeavor, and required very close partnership with all three companies.  It was an amazing experience to lead such a large project, and have a successful feature launch.

OK, I’ve gotta know: What kind of TV do you have, and is it compatible with Dolby Vision?

Ha!  I’m a little embarrassed to say, I don’t own a real TV.  I have a 10 year old computer monitor with a VGA adapter for video, and a hardwired controller plugged into computer speakers for my audio.  I’m fairly low tech at home, and instead spend a lot of time outdoors.  However, I have been eyeing the new LG OLED TVs, and may upgrade later this year.

We’ve worked alongside the Women in Gaming group to feature the women on our team, and one thing I really enjoyed was how we were asked to offer up advice to women now aspiring to work within the gaming industry. Do you have any advice for the women reading our blog on how to get started in gaming or technology?

Great question, I’m really passionate about helping people (especially women) get into the gaming and technology fields.  My biggest piece of advice is to go big – seek out opportunities that scare you.  When I was graduating college, I signed up for an interview with Microsoft in the hopes that I would get a free lunch (there was no way I thought I would actually get an offer).  And a year ago, a dream job opened up on a different team, but were looking for a Senior or Principal Program Manager and I was still very Junior.  However, I went to the hiring manager and told him, “You should hire me for this position.  This is an area I love, and a technology I know.  By the way, my name is Katie.”  A week later I had the job, and have loved it ever since.

I think women especially have a tendency to sell ourselves short.  We are constantly bombarded by the imposter syndrome and the fear of not being good enough.  So my advice is to go big and be bold in spite of these fears.  Search out the areas you are passionate about, and go after opportunities even if you don’t think you may be qualified.

What are you currently playing? Or do you have an all-time favorite game that you don’t think people should miss out on?

I enjoy repeating games and picking up on all of the funny jokes and references I missed the first time through.  Right now I’m replaying Borderlands 2, and I really enjoy Tiny Tina’s explosive character.  She has a quest to collect crumpets, and now whenever I see a crumpet store in Seattle, I think of the game.

In the same vein, what’s the coolest Achievement you’ve unlocked?

In Borderlands 2, there’s an arena called the Circle of Slaughter.  It took my friends and I almost a week to last all 5 rounds and get the achievement for Went Five Rounds.  There was lots of shouting involved as we made it all the way through.

Thanks again for taking the time to speak with us, Katie! Are there any spaces online our readers can reach out and follow along with your work?

I’m not really on social media, but if anyone has follow-up questions, feel free to direct them @xboxinsider on Twitter. Thanks for having me!
