The Digital Dragons Awards 2023 celebrate the best of Polish gaming

We’re reporting live from Digital Dragons just after the conclusion of the Digital Dragons Awards 2023 gala. Each year the awards ceremony recognises the best of the Polish games industry, which is made up of over 400 studios.

Mobile and Switch games like Trek to Yomi, Railbound, and Kao the Kangaroo were nominated across multiple categories but were pipped to the post by their competitors. Draw Distance’s Serial Cleaners picked up the award for Best Polish Game Art for its graffiti-inspired style.

Digital Dragons honoured Lucasz Hacura, CEO of Anshar Studios, with this year’s Special Recognition award. His studio has worked on a huge array of games including Divinity: Original Sin 2, Darksiders 3, and its original isometric RPG title Gamedec. Lucasz said, “I’m super honoured to receive this award, and hope to continue to contribute to [the] expansion of Polish game dev.”

The biggest award of the night for the Best Polish Game went to Dying Light 2, which also scooped up the award for Best Polish Game Design. FromSoftware’s Elden Ring took home the title of Best Foreign game, beating out Return To Monkey Island, Stray, and others.

How I Designed a News Aggregator Web Application Using Django

Rate this post

A news aggregator is simply a web application that aggregates or collects news articles from different websites and presents them in a single location so that users can visit the location (website) and click on the link to read news of interest. This saves time and resources.

In this project article, we will learn how to design a news aggregator web application using the Django framework. Specifically, we will scrape the web for news articles using a Python module, and have them displayed on our Django web application.

This is something similar to the News App designed using the Flask framework in previous tutorial projects.

Setting up Django

Follow these steps to set up Django in your Ubuntu terminal:

$ mkdir project
$ cd project
$ python3 -m venv .venv
$ source .venv/bin/activate
(.venv) $ pip install django requests bs4
(.venv) $ django-admin startproject newsAggregator .
(.venv) $ python3 manage.py startapp news
(.venv) $ python3 manage.py migrate
(.venv) $ python3 manage.py runserver

Remember, the Django project is created in the project folder as indicated by the dot command. Run the local server to confirm that the installation went successfully.

Creating Views

from django.shortcuts import render
import requests from decouple import config API_KEY = config('NEWS_API_KEY') COUNTRY = 'us' def news_lists(request): if request.method == 'POST': url = f'https://newsapi.org/v2/top-headlines?country={COUNTRY}&apiKey={API_KEY}' res = requests.get(url).json() news_articles = res['articles'] context = { 'news_articles': news_articles } return render(request, 'home.html', context) return render(request, 'home.html'

We import the requests module which is an essential tool for retrieving data from a webpage. We use the Python-decouple module to load environment variables. The first variable is the News API key. If you have read the project tutorial where I used the Flask framework to create a similar project, you are expected to have your API key.

Create a .env file to save your environment variables. Inside the file, write this:

API_KEY = 'Your API key'
DJANGO_SECRET_KEY = 'Secret Key'

The Second environment variable is Django’s secret key found in the settings.py file. The instruction from Django is to keep the secret key secret.

Of course, this applies to deploying an app to a production server. But since I will be pushing the files to GitHub, I have to follow best practices by keeping it secret and loading it as an environment variable.

Another Python module, Python-dotenv is working behind the scene to make all these possible. If you start the server without installing the module, you may get an error message from Django.

Back to the view function, if the request method is POST, we use the requests module to fetch current news from a defined country. You can change it to use any country of your choice. We then save the response in a dictionary form and render it to the home.html webpage.

Creating Templates

We will create a home.html file inside a templates folder. So, create the folder and the file.

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html lang="en"> <head> <!-- Required meta tags --> <meta charset="utf-8" /> <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1" /> <!-- Bootstrap CSS --> <link href="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/npm/bootstrap@5.1.3/dist/css/bootstrap.min.css" rel="stylesheet" integrity="sha384-1BmE4kWBq78iYhFldvKuhfTAU6auU8tT94WrHftjDbrCEXSU1oBoqyl2QvZ6jIW3" crossorigin="anonymous" /> <title>Django News Headline</title> </head> <body> <h1 class="text-center mt-4 mb-5">Django News Headlines</h1> <div class="row mt-5"> <div class="col-md-2"></div> <div class="col-md-8"> <div class="row"> {% for news in news_articles %} <div class="col-md-4 mb-5"> <div class="card" style="width: 18rem"> <img src="{{ news.urlToImage }}" class="card-img-top" alt="..." /> <div class="card-body"> <h5 class="card-title">{{ news.title }}</h5> <p class="card-text">{{ news.description }}</p> <a href="{{ news.url }}" class="btn btn-primary">Read More</a> </div> </div> </div> {% endfor %} </div> </div> <div class="col-md-2"></div> </div> <!-- Bootstrap Bundle with Popper --> <script src="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/npm/bootstrap@5.1.3/dist/js/bootstrap.bundle.min.js" integrity="sha384-ka7Sk0Gln4gmtz2MlQnikT1wXgYsOg+OMhuP+IlRH9sENBO0LRn5q+8nbTov4+1p" crossorigin="anonymous" ></script> </body>
</html>

Going back to the view function, you will notice the variable news_articles.

When the response was converted to JSON, the news content was found in res['articles']. Having stored it in the news_articles, we simply use Django’s for-loop to iterate through the articles. This is also similar to what we did using the Flask framework.

Each iteration displays the news title, image, description, and a link to read more

Registering Apps and URLs

Go to the settings.py file. If you will be pushing your code to GitHub, remove the Django secret key, store it in the .env file, and load it using the Python-decouple module.

from pathlib import Path
import os
from decouple import config SECRET_KEY = config('DJANGO_SECRET_KEY') # Build paths inside the project like this: BASE_DIR / 'subdir'.
BASE_DIR = Path(__file__).resolve().parent.parent # Quick-start development settings - unsuitable for production
# See https://docs.djangoproject.com/en/4.1/howto/deployment/checklist/ # SECURITY WARNING: keep the secret key used in production secret!
SECRET_KEY = SECRET_KEY

Scroll down to the INSTALLED_APPS section, and register the news app.

INSTALLED_APPS = [ 'django.contrib.admin', 'django.contrib.auth', 'django.contrib.contenttypes', 'django.contrib.sessions', 'django.contrib.messages', 'django.contrib.staticfiles', 'news',
]

Scroll down to the TEMPLATES section, and also let Django know of an existing templates folder.

TEMPLATES = [ { 'BACKEND': 'django.template.backends.django.DjangoTemplates', 'DIRS': [os.path.join(BASE_DIR, 'templates')], #add these 'APP_DIRS': True, 'OPTIONS': { 'context_processors': [ 'django.template.context_processors.debug', 'django.template.context_processors.request', 'django.contrib.auth.context_processors.auth', 'django.contrib.messages.context_processors.messages', ], }, },
]

Next is the URLs. Go to the project-level urls.py file.

from django.contrib import admin
from django.urls import path, include urlpatterns = [ path('admin/', admin.site.urls), path('', include('news.urls')),
]

This also informs Django of an existing app-level URLs. Finally, let’s create the app-level urls.py file. This time, inside the news folder.

from django.urls import path
from .views import news_lists urlpatterns = [ path('', news_lists, name='home'),
]

The news_lists() is our view function. The URL will be referred to as home in templates files where necessary.

Everything is done and dusted. Let’s start the local server. Run python3 manage.py runserver in your terminal.

Conclusion

Having gone through this project, no doubt, you will appreciate the simplicity Flask has compared with Django.

However, Django can be used to create web apps far more complex than the Flask framework. What we just did with Django is for learning’s sake, to improve our Python skills. You have learned a thing or two.

Use that knowledge to create a similar app and share it with the world!

Why OpenAI Says ‘Not Yet’ to GPT-5

4/5 – (1 vote)

In a recent dialogue concerning the potential risks of AI systems, Sam Altman, CEO and co-founder of OpenAI, firmly stated that the organization is not in the process of developing GPT-5, the anticipated successor to the AI language model GPT-4, launched earlier this year in March.

💡 Recommended: GPT-4 is Out! A New Language Model on Steroids

Sam Altman on “The Letter”

The backdrop was an event at the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where Altman addressed a circulating open letter within the tech community.

The letter, urging labs like OpenAI to halt the creation of AI systems more potent than GPT-4, underscored anxieties about the safety of such future systems. This plea, however, has been met with criticism from various industry professionals, including some of its own endorsers.

Opinions on the potential threat posed by AI vary widely—some envision an existential crisis, while others see more ordinary challenges—and there’s no clear consensus on how to enact a “pause” in development.

Altman: GPT-5 Is Not Under Development

Altman, addressing the audience at MIT, opined that the letter lacked technical specificity concerning where the developmental pause is necessary. He also corrected an early version of the letter that insinuated OpenAI was already working on GPT-5. “That is not the case, and it won’t be for a while,” clarified Altman, dismissing the assertion as somewhat misguided.

Nonetheless, OpenAI’s decision to hold off on GPT-5 doesn’t mean it’s halting the progression of GPT-4. As Altman emphasized, the company is considering the safety ramifications of its ongoing projects. “We are conducting other explorations atop GPT-4 that I believe carry a range of safety issues, which were overlooked in the letter,” he pointed out.

You can view the entire conversation here:

YouTube Video

Altman’s remarks provide valuable insight—not necessarily about OpenAI’s future roadmap, but rather the complexities surrounding the AI safety debate and how we quantify and track advancement. While Altman confirms that OpenAI isn’t actively developing GPT-5, the statement is not as informative as it may seem.

The Fallacy of Version Numbers

This confusion partly arises from what could be termed the ‘fallacy of version numbers.’ This notion suggests that sequentially numbered tech upgrades equate to clear, linear enhancements in capability.

It’s a misconception rooted in consumer tech, where new models or operating systems often carry higher numbers as a marketing strategy. It’s tempting to infer that the iPhone 35 is superior to the iPhone 34 simply because the numerical value is larger. (Yeah, these version numbers don’t exist yet.)

This flawed reasoning has seeped into the realm of artificial intelligence, particularly when discussing models like OpenAI’s language processors.

Unfortunately, it’s not just tech enthusiasts sharing overzealous Twitter threads, prophesying the advent of superintelligent AI based on the incrementing numbers. Even seasoned commentators, often lacking falsifiable evidence to support their claims about AI superintelligence, fall into this trap.

They resort to drawing ambiguous graphs with “progress” and “time” axes, sketching an upward trending line and presenting it without critical evaluation.

This is not an attempt to dismiss the genuine concerns about AI safety or overlook the rapid evolution of these systems, which we are yet to fully control.

Instead, it emphasizes the necessity of distinguishing between well-founded and flawed arguments. Assigning a number to something—a new phone model or the concept of intelligence—doesn’t necessarily imply that progress is or is not made.

For instance, OpenAI still makes a lot of progress within the GPT-4 framework:

Opinion

The primary argument made here is to shift the spotlight from an arbitrary numbering system to the actual capabilities and improvements of the models.

Progress can often come from integrating existing AI models with other systems to enhance their functionality, rather than just focusing on developing newer versions.

Again: First, integrate the existing powerful AI systems into legacy systems before focusing on new flagship versions. There are myriads of juicy, low-hanging fruits you can harvest quickly!

The distinction between development and training is another crucial point in this discussion. While the development of improvements is an ongoing process, the training of a new model is a separate, extensive procedure that requires considerable resources.

This is why Altman’s statement that OpenAI isn’t currently working on GPT-5 won’t necessarily provide reassurance to those apprehensive about AI safety.

The organization is still enhancing GPT-4’s potential (by connecting it to the internet, for instance), and other industry players are developing equally ambitious tools, allowing AI systems to act on behalf of users. Numerous efforts are undoubtedly underway to optimize GPT-4, and OpenAI might introduce an intermediate version, such as GPT-4.5 (similar to the GPT-3.5 release), further illustrating how version numbers can mislead.

Even if a hypothetical global moratorium on new AI developments were enforceable, it’s evident that society is already grappling with the capabilities of existing systems.

GPT-5 may not be on the horizon, but the question remains: does it matter when we are still coming to grips with the depth and breadth of GPT-4’s capabilities?

Man of Medan Switch review – all that glisters is not gold

The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan is the first in Supermassive’s popular series of standalone cinematic interactive drama and survival horror games. It’s seen much praise since its 2019 release and continues to thrive amongst a cult fanbase spread across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. But Supermassive isn’t content with merely offering in-game jump scares, giving us all a shock when it shadow-dropped the Man of Medan Switch version out of nowhere in early May, 2023. So, how do the spooks size up?

Let’s begin with a brief rundown. In case you’re unfamiliar, The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan is a heavily cinematic and narrative-driven game in which your choices matter. It takes place in the middle of the South Pacific Ocean near French Polynesia and revolves around a group of young adults and their ship’s captain, setting out at sea on a small skipper to do a spot of diving in search of an undiscovered wreck. However, the tides soon change, as a group of modern-day pirates commandeer the ship and set out in search of a mysterious treasure called the ‘Manchurian Gold’.

Our unlikely crew of captors and captives soon find themselves aboard an abandoned WWII ghost ship which appears to be tied to this treasure. But, of course, not all is as it seems, and the tale soon devolves into one of chaos, fuelled by greed, fear, and even a pinch of an apparent supernatural threat.

As with the other titles in Supermassive Game’s repertoire, Man of Medan sees you take control of the five captives at different points, exploring the ship, collecting clues, and attempting to avoid peril long enough to escape. With heaps of key decisions on your shoulders and the lives of the protagonists in your hands, it’s up to you which branching paths your story takes and whether the characters live or die, leading to a great level of replayability as you explore all of the potential outcomes.

Man of Medan offers a single-player mode, a two-player online co-op mode called ‘shared story’, and an up to five-player local co-op mode called ‘movie night’, which sees you and your pals taking control of the different characters, along with prompts to pass the controller at each turn.

Each playthrough lasts around four to four and a half hours, which feels just right for this type of game, and there are plenty more hours to pack in if you want to explore the different outcomes and collectables. Whether alone or with friends, every run can offer a vastly different experience, despite the overall linear path of the narrative – which is easily one of the main reasons why the game still manages to captivate its audiences to this day.

In terms of gameplay, the game mostly revolves around walking sections spliced with cutscenes, with the main crux hinging on those aforementioned choices, collecting key items and premonitions to supplement your knowledge or influence the outcome of certain scenes, and occasional QTE sequences (quick time events).

The control scheme in the Man of Medan Switch version is as simple and easy to grasp as on any other platform, and its button layout translates well to the joy-cons and Switch Pro controller. You walk around with the left joystick, interact with items using A and ZR, and hit buttons to align with prompts during specific QTE sequences. For the most part, I find inputs to be very reliable and responsive, with little to no delay, which is exceptionally important in a game where failing a QTE can have a massive impact on the outcome of your game.

Camera angles are fixed and cinematic, which certainly adds to the interactive movie vibe, but it can sometimes make movement feel a little sluggish and clumsy, feeling closest to the first Resident Evil despite not being true tank controls. This isn’t an issue unique to the Switch version, though the lower resolution and, of course, a smaller screen in handheld mode, can make it a little trickier to work out where you are in relation to the objects and doorways around you. Luckily, I find this is pretty easy to adapt to, and once I got back into the rhythm of how the characters control, I had little trouble aside from the occasional hiccup.

Right from its initial announcement of the Switch version, Supermassive has been quite transparent about the technical limitations of this port, even noting the 24fps cap at the bottom of the Nintendo eShop page. I was initially quite pessimistic about how this low cap would look, but it’s important to note that Man of Medan is a very cinematic game, and 24fps is the universally accepted norm for a ‘cinematic frame rate’ – and it actually holds up pretty well here, for the most part.

The lower frame rate is hardly noticeable in handheld mode, though it does occasionally make the game look a bit stuttery in docked mode. This is especially noticeable in some of the late-game sequences that clearly push the Switch’s ageing hardware to its limits, such as while you’re exploring the stormy rooms during Distress Signal or running away in Revenge. Naturally, with the frame rate cap already being so low, any further drops do look particularly choppy – far more so than such a minor drop in a higher FPS tile.

For the most part, this isn’t too problematic and didn’t particularly impact my enjoyment of the game. However, I did have a stumble towards the end of my first playthrough in docked mode, where the frame rate dropped dramatically during a keep calm QTE, causing me to fail and have to restart the chapter in order to keep everyone alive. Luckily, upon re-loading, the frame rate managed to smooth itself out – but that’s something to keep in mind.

Beyond the frame rate cap and occasional stuttering, Man of Medan’s Switch version is noticeably downscaled compared to versions on other platforms. This lower resolution does result in some visual hiccups, such as some pretty intense texture popping and inconsistent lighting at times – all of which is far more noticeable in docked mode than handheld.

However, I truly respect that Supermassive put in the work to make this port manageable on native hardware rather than slapping together a Cloud version. It’s clear that a lot of work went into bringing Man of Medan to Switch, and the game truly tests the limits of this six-year-old console, meaning it’s honestly quite impressive that it looks so good.

In addition to the desirable portability, the Man of Medan Switch version also offers a few additional features as the icing on the cake. These include updated gameplay features, such as a wider choice of accessibility options, improved UI and interactions, and even an extended playable chapter called Flooded – a climactic ending to the game that introduces brand new deaths. These additional features both sweeten the deal for new players and offer an extra layer of incentive for long-time fans of The Dark Pictures Anthology to give the Switch version a try.

The extended accessibility options are also a very welcome addition, offering you the ability to toggle single action buttons, hold to complete button mash, QTE timers, and more. There are also a nice variety of subtitle and text options, including size, colour, and a dyslexia-friendly font. Unfortunately, subtitles are off by default, and you need to go to the in-game settings to turn them on. I personally believe that subtitles should always be on by default, especially in narrative, choice-driven games like Man of Medan.

Though the Man of Medan Switch version is definitely a downgrade in comparison with the other ports, it still offers plenty of enjoyment. I can’t recommend it as the ‘best’ way to play the game, but it maintains much of the mystery and tension of the original, and, for the most part, its visual and performance issues are quite infrequent or minor, meaning it’s still an enjoyable experience.

The price point is also respectable, avoiding that all-too-familiar ‘Switch tax’ that seems to tack itself onto just about every third-party release and port. It sits at $19.99/£17.99, which is very close to its current full price on Steam, and roughly half of its launch RRP – a respectable cost for such a memorable game.

In short, if you’re interested in the world of cinematic, choice-driven narrative horror, and feel you can overlook some of the shortcomings enforced by the Switch’s ageing hardware, then you should have a pretty great time with this little jewel of the sea, especially with the added benefit of portability and new content. Its winding mystery, believable characters, and impactful choice system makes for an all-around tense and atmospheric experience, and, like the ocean lapping at the edge of a shore, it’s sure to keep tugging you back for more.

Man of Medan Switch review

The first entry into The Dark Pictures Anthology, Man of Medan still holds up as a tense, cinematic horror experience where every choice matters. Unfortunately, the Switch’s ageing hardware holds this version’s performance back, but it’s nonetheless an impressive port with some welcome additions, and still captures the souls of all who board this ship.

Tiny Dragon Story kicks off RedDeer Games’ Indie Spring Spree

Tiny Dragon Story is out now on the Nintendo Switch, kicking off RedDeer Games’ Indie Spring Spree. This event sees the publisher releasing four new indie games for the Switch across the four Fridays in May. The games come from a range of genres and styles so that everyone has something to look forward to this month.

The first game in the Indie Spring Spree is Tiny Dragon Story, a nostalgic 1-bit platformer where you (unsurprisingly) play as a tiny dragon looking to reclaim the treasure that a cunning wizard stole from him. The retro visuals and atmosphere are great for players looking for nostalgia or newer fans of the retro gaming genre. You can grab the game now on the Nintendo Switch eShop for a super-discounted launch price.

RedDeer Games’ (RDG) second release is For a Vast Future, which hits the Switch on May 12. In this dystopian RPG you take on the role of an outlaw fighting against the vicious, self-appointed governments and cults that have taken control. Following the dystopian theme, Mechanic 8320 releases on May 19 for fans of sci-fi point and click adventures.

RDG has yet to announce the final game rounding off the Indie Spring Spree, but we do know that it’s a “sinister expressionist tale of the classic battle between good and evil, amidst the walls of a gloomy, corrupt city”. We can’t wait to find out more on May 10.

Minit Fun Racer is helping raise money for charity… fast!

You may be aware of the fun action title Minit, where you replay the same minute on repeat, only to learn more about the world each time. Well, publisher Devolver Digital is following this up with an exciting expansion to the monochrome universe, and the Minit Fun Racer release date is already here!

Minit Fun Racer is an endless-runner-style game that sees you hop over traffic, collect coins, and just generally race around having fun. 100% of all profits from the title go to charity, and Doctors Without Borders is one of the first to receive funding.

Much like Minit itself, Minit Fun Racer features a simplistic black-and-white style and chunky pixel art, but the visuals are very much part of the charm. We don’t expect this title to set the world on fire, but Devolver Digital is known for its quality titles, and at the cost of $2.99/£2.69, this is a really easy way to donate to charity while having some fun.

You can watch the Minit Fun Racer release date trailer below to get a glimpse of the title in action.
