Zelda Tears of the Kingdom – Zonai explained

Being such a humongous game, Nintendo’s Switch title The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is full of mysteries, many still unsolved to this day (keeping many a YouTube creator in business). As we hurtle towards the imminent release of BotW’s sequel, one particular mystery is unfolding, so we’re going over everything we know in our Zelda Tears of the Kingdom Zonai explained guide.

Before we magnesis your eyes down to the rest of the guide, be sure to check out our Hyrule compendium of content on The Legend of Zelda games, new and old. We have articles on the best Zelda games, Wind Waker Switch, Twilight Princess Switch, Tears of the Kingdom pre-orders, Zelda Lego, Zelda wallpapers, Breath of the Wild wallpaper, and plenty more Links for you to explore.

Alright, explorers, let’s gallop on the back of Epona into our Zelda Tears of the Kingdom Zonai explained guide.

Zelda Tears of the Kingdom Zonai explained: Link stands in front of a Zonai structure wearing the barbarian armour

Who are the Zelda Tears of the Kingdom Zonai?

Alluded to heavily in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, the Zonai tribe are an ancient civilisation, already wiped out during the time of Breath of the Wild. Though the people are long gone, evidence of the tribe exists thanks to the Zonai ruins, as well as buildings and ruins based on their notable dragon sigil dotted around the map.

While there’s not much in the way of direct references to the Zonai, several items and locations include descriptions of the ancient race. Players find the three pieces of the Barbarian armour set at the centre of each of the three labyrinths, hinting that the tribe built these giant constructs. The description for each armour piece mentions “an ancient warlike tribe from the Faron region,” while each armour piece also increases attack. From this, it’s likely the Zonai were warriors, kitted out in armour similar to the Barbarian set.

Zelda Tears of the Kingdom Zonai explained: ruins show a Zonai structure, based on a dragon

The Zonai crest depicts a water dragon, and many of the Zonai ruins in the Faron region feature a similar water dragon. Etching in the ruins also depict a triforce symbol, suggesting the Zonai have a connection to it, and possibly are able to wield magic. The race also has a strong connection to animals, with each triangle of the triforce associated with an animal. Dragons represent courage, owls for wisdom, and boards for power.

Are the Zelda Tears of the Kingdom Zonai associated with the Shiekah?

Both from their location, as well as text descriptions within The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, it’s likely the Zonai and the Shiekah are two completely different tribes, but they had access to both the triforce and magic, however through different means.

While there isn’t much connecting the two, we know the Shiekah built the shrines, and it’s hinted the Zonai built the three labyrinths to test warrior’s strength. The fact that each labyrinth contains a shrine hints towards the two tribes working together, so it’s entirely possible the two races worked together to fight Calamity Ganon many centuries ago.

Zelda Tears of the Kingdom Zonai explained: Link attacks an enemy with a shield that has a dragon head attached to it

Is Link using Zonai technology in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom?

In the trailers released for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, we see Link and Zelda exploring underground caverns with columns and statues matching the style of the Zonai. One trailer shows Link using a shield with a dragon head attacked, similar to the dragon head that symbolises the Zonai tribe.

YouTube Thumbnail

The most recent Zelda Tears of the Kingdom stream gives fans an extended look at the title, and Link fights an enemy known as a soldier construct. The enemy drops an item called a Zonai charge, which looks similar to some of the later technology we see powering fans, wheels, and other traversal methods. Link’s new fuse ability and the technology he uses to create methods of transport all seem directly tied to the ancient Zonai technology.

Zelda Tears of the Kingdom Zonai explained: Link battles a Zonai soldier construct

When did the Zelda Tears of the Kingdom Zonai exist?

It doesn’t explicitly state within The Legend of the Zelda: Breath of the WIld the era that the Zonai belong to. However, descriptions of the Zonai in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Master Works (Creating a Champion in the West) state that “it’s rumoured that these people disappeared suddenly thousands of years ago.”

Zelda Tears of the Kingdom Zonai explained: A breath of the Wild map shows the Faron region

Where are the Zelda Tears of the Kingdom Zonai ruins?

The Zonai ruins and many of the statues bearing the Zonai sigil and markings are all located in the Faron region of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. However, it is heavily suggested that the Zonai also built the three labyrinths found throughout the game, suggesting that the Zonai travelled all over Zonai, despite calling the Faron region their home.

Trailers for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom show many underground caverns with statues and wall etchings using Zonai iconography, possibly hinting that the Zonai tribe actually used underground caverns to travel across Hyrule, explaining why they have technology spread across the land, while only seeming to exist within one region. The Barbarian armour hints that they are a fearsome warrior race, so it is believable that they travel underneath the Hyrule we know, tackling large monsters and paving their own roads across the map of Hyrule.

Mech a mess, with mobile game War Robots’ new PvE mode

Originally crashing onto the scene in 2014, the Pixonic-developed action title War Robots has seen no shortage of updates and changes. But, the latest just might be the most exciting. The title is set to receive its update 8.8 soon, and the flagship feature is the new War Robots Extermination mode, a brand new PvE experience in the usually PvP game.

After players got their first taste of PvE during an event back in May 2022, the Pixonic team is implementing it as a permanent gameplay mode due to overwhelmingly positive feedback it recieved, and with the idea of giving players a break from the frantic multiplayer mayhem. In Extermination, you must pick a squad of mechs and fight an army of gigantic robot spiders across multiple levels for some fun rewards.

Like many PvE modes, the difficulty ramps up the longer you survive, and the further you reach in the depths of Extermination mode, the greater the rewards. Speaking on the new mode, Boris Burangulov – the executive producer of War Robots – explains that “it was a challenging project, but also a fun and exciting thing to do.” Will you be hopping into the new mode?

If you want to get a glimpse at the War Robots Extermination mode, as well as some of the fresh features coming in the latest update, be sure to check out the new cinematic trailer below.

FNAF Vanny – lore, personality, and more

There are plenty of terrifying characters in the Five Night’s At Freddy’s franchise, with each and every anthropomorphic inclusion being out to kill you at some point. As the years go on, however, players are slowly getting used to working alongside some of those maniacal mechs. Well, that is until FNAF Vanny comes along, so learn all about the ferocious rabbit in our guide.

Before we burrow into the rest of this article, we’re here to dangle the carrot of extra content in front of you, in the form of so many fantastic spooky guides. Check out our coverage on FNAF characters, FNAF plush, FNAF Freddy, FNAF Gregory, FNAF Roxy, FNAF Chica, Poppy Playtime Boxy Boo, Poppy Playtime Mommy Long Legs, and Poppy Playtime toys.

Let’s hop on down to our FNAF Vanny guide.

FNAF Vanny: a human in a rabbit suit appears through the pitch black, leaning towards the viewer

Who is FNAF Vanny?

Vanny is a human in a rabbit suit, appearing as a white adult woman with long blonde hair, similar to FNAF Vanessa. The Vanny suit resembles a large white rabbit but with a wide psychotic grin, with huge wide eyes and stitches across the pattern of the suit. The suit also has a blue bow on the chest, and paw pads on each of the feet.

What is FNAF Vanny’s personality?

FNAF Vanny appears as a psychopath, hunting down FNAF Gregory, and one of FNAF: Security Breach’s multiple endings highlights that FNAF Vanny has already killed several children. Though she does appear to have some uncertainty in her voice, she nevertheless is responsible for the deaths of many children in a sadistic fashion, and is happy to hunt down Gregory, appearing to relish in the chase.

FNAF Vanny: a human in a rabbit suit appears in a window, ready to press a button on a remote

Is FNAF Vanny actually Vanessa?

Though there is not a concrete answer in any of the games or official media, fans generally accept that FNAF Vanny is actually FNAF Vanessa. The characters bear a striking resemblance, and the prevailing theory is that Vanessa is one of the people that William Afton is responsible for turning into a killer. Vanessa previously worked as a security guard at the Freddy Fazbear Virtual Experience, and we presume that this is how William Afton, while in his Glitchtrap form, captured and brainwashed Vanessa, turning her into the psychotic killer Vanny.

What games does FNAF Vanny appear in?

FNAF Vanny first appears as a voice in Five Night’s at Freddy’s: Help Wanted, once you complete the Curse of the Dreadbear DLC. Vanny makes her first true appearance in Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach as the antagonist chasing FNAF Gregory, often appearing to scare the player, threatening both Gregory and Glamrock FNAF Freddy.

FNAF Vanny: a human in a rabbit suit creeps down a hallway

Who plays FNAF Vanny?

Two different voice actors play FNAF Vanny, as Jessica Tang plays Vanny in Five Night’s At Freddy’s: Help Wanted. Meanwhile, Marta Svetek plays Vanny in FNAF: Security Breach, who you may recognise not only as the voice of Gregory and Roxy, but also from appearances in Destiny 2: The Witch Queen, Horizon Forbidden West, and also Battlefield 2042.

Well then Freddy fans, that’s all we have on FNAF Vanny for today. We hope this guide is helpful, but for even more looks into the FNAF lore, be sure to check out our articles covering FNAF Foxy and FNAF Puppet next.

GDC 2023: How a trip to London inspired Mini Metro

We’re on the floor at GDC 2023, getting all the latest on the titles to look out for and chatting with all the developers. Out of one of these discussions, a forthcoming interview with Dinosaur Polo Club, we learned something fascinating about the game’s creation. As it turns out, if it hadn’t been for one trip to London, things could be very different.

With our chat with the brothers responsible for founding Dinosaur Polo Club, Rob and Peter Curry, we found out that while the original project had already had a pitch, it was a trip to London that helped Rob put together what was already forming in his mind. Seemingly, London’s convoluted transport system is at least good for something.

“I was in London and I just really enjoyed having to get from A to B on the train. So it was interesting when I was like ‘okay, I’m here, and I have to get to here. I could take this route or go straight.’ It was just this kind of interesting puzzle that I hadn’t really done before.” From there, the brothers worked together to build on their original minimalist gaming concepts, furthering the basis for Mini Metro and then Mini Motorways

It’s no surprise to learn that the London Underground was a primary inspiration in the development of Mini Metro, especially when you look at how similar the game’s minimalist graphics are to that of the metro maps that line the tube network underneath England’s capital. Still, it’s interesting to get inside the mind of a developer conceptualising what would become a future hit, and uncovering this information is just another reason we love GDC.

There you have it, how Mini Metro owes so much to the London Underground. Be sure to keep an eye out for our future interview with Rob and Peter from Dinosaur Polo Club. In the meantime, check out our GDC Omega Strikers interview with the team at Odyssey Interactive.

Samsung is ready to lead the mobile gaming market

“When we launched the S23… our main focus was camera and performance. Today, we just want to focus on performance.” This is one of the first things Won-Joon Choi would say to me. Sounds like Samsung wants to remind mobile game fans of something.

I’m sat inside the Hotel Porta Fira Barcelona drinking water out of a wine glass and waiting to interview Won-Joon Choi, Executive Vice President, Head of Mobile R&D at Samsung. I just got off a flight and definitely look scruffier than I should. But then again, I’m not here to talk business, I’m here to talk gaming, so it’s fine right?

Outside is the Fira Grand Via exhibition centre, right next to a massive roundabout with a cube of billboards in the middle of it. All four are advertising the Samsung Galaxy S23 series, one side showing off a racing game and Samsung’s AirPods competitor, the other the sleek back of the two new phones. It’s cold but sunny, and I’m sweating a little bit.

About 138 hours later I’d be walking through Barcelona at night, and look up to see another Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, this time on the Catedral de la Santa Creu i Santa Eulàlia. I posted a photo of it on Instagram and dubbed it the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra Catedral de la Santa Creu i Santa Eulàlia. I was making a joke.

Samsung Won-Joon Choi interview - the Barcelona Cathedral at night, a large old building, with building work near its spire covered by a Samsung advert.

All this is to say, MWC 2023 was loud with Samsung. While Oppo may have turned up the volume in terms of London Underground advertising, Samsung is making a different sort of statement. “Biggest mobile trade show? We own it” – that sorta thing.

I go up some stairs that I was earlier refused passage by a security guard, assumedly because of my sweaty and scruffy demeanour. I go into a lift to the 24th floor. I ask how many floors there are. There are 24.

I walk into the meeting room – La Mordella. There are five people inside. One is Won-Joon Choi. Another is some sort of PR assistant, who would later whisper some stuff in his ear after I ask a question. Another is an interpreter – Won-Joon speaks excellent English, though some answers were in Korean. Another is working the slides on the projector. The final person doesn’t look up from the laptop they’re typing on.

So, uhh, what was I here to do again? Oh, yeah, ask some questions. You see, Samsung wants to remind everyone that it makes phones with a lot of power packed inside. It wants to court the game-likers. So, it’s invited the number one mobile gaming site in the world to have a chat about it.

YouTube Thumbnail

The new Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra has a special Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 inside. Instead of its main Kryo CPU core running at 3.2 GHz, as it does in the standard chip, it runs at 3.36 GHz. Plus, the Adreno GPU clocks in at 719 MHz instead of 680 MHz. Qualcomm and Samsung even say it can do ray tracing…

This special partnership between the two is notable. Won-Joon used to work at Qualcomm. Now, over at Samsung, the company can say it has the fastest chip in an Android phone. It even beats the iPhone 14 Pro on some benchmarks. Did Won-Joon just call his buddies back at Qualcomm and ask for some extra special sauce? Well, no.

“We work with all of the major chipset partners from the ground up. So, that was the case for Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 as well. We’ve been involved from the very beginning of the planning, letting them know about our requirements for the performance as well as architecture,” Won-Joon says. Not exactly a thrilling tale, so I dig a little.

Would Samsung take chipset production in-house like Apple? Apple silicon’s success across its different devices has become especially apparent in recent years. Then again, the chip in the Galaxy S23 Ultra does compete with Apple’s most recent top-end mobile chip, the A16 Bionic.

Samsung Won-Joon Choi interview - the man himself stood arms-crossed in a tie-less suit and glasses in front of a wall of folding mobile phones.

Short answer: no. “Of course, these major chipset companies have their strengths,” Won-Joon (above) says, “so we will continue to strengthen our collaboration with these partners. And then, on one hand, there are solutions that can be differentiated for Galaxy, so we will develop those internally and add them on through our collaboration.”

So, this is where Samsung is at when it comes to powering its mobiles. Qualcomm is giving the company what it needs in a clearly fruitful partnership. And it has created a chip that can do ray-tracing, a feature Apple had to scrap on its most recent pro phone at the last minute after discovering key mistakes and being “too ambitious with adding new features” (a mistake “unprecedented in the group’s history”, all according to The Information).

So, is the ray-tracing claim just a good headline to have, after Apple failed to push through its next-generation pro silicon? Or is it a reality we can expect to see? Luckily, both Samsung and Qualcomm are pretty reasonable about the realities of ray tracing on mobile.

“We’re not quoting any types of numbers. But I think some of it’s about working with the game developers to understand, like, typically, not every scene has ray tracing, right? So what are those scenes that we really want to optimise that are truly going to be impactful to the user?” Mike Roberts, VP, Head of Global Product, Partner, and Technology Marketing at Qualcomm – crikey, what a mouthful – said in a roundtable I attended a few days after meeting Won-Joon.

Samsung Won-Joon Choi interview - a green Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra next to pleasant geometric shapes in similar tones.

“Hardware-based ray tracing has been something we’ve been chasing for many, many years, in fact, that is here today, that’s going to continue to improve,” he said. “When you think of consoles, you know… of what Xbox and PlayStation and Nintendo are doing in their next-generation consoles, I think there isn’t going to be this huge gap between them.”

This lofty aim is admirable, sure. But the reality is, just because hardware-based ray tracing is theoretically possible, doesn’t mean us lay folk get to use it. In fact, as far as I can tell, there’s not a single game that uses it that’s currently fully released. I do like Samsung’s ambition combined with realism, however, and a clear understanding that it’s the developers who need to implement it, after all.

“We’ve been working with chipset partners for many years to look at and provide this ray-tracing feature in-device,” Won-Joon told me. “As a result, we were able to introduce the chipset capable of hardware-accelerated ray tracing in our current generation of S23.

“It’s not just the hardware capability that we require, we need the game developers to develop games where they use ray tracing. In this respect, we don’t plan to sit idle and just look at the situation passively. We want to be actively involved and that is why we already began cooperation with a couple of game developers.

Samsung Won-Joon Choi interview - a pink Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra next to pleasant geometric shapes in similar tones.

“We are providing them with optimization assistance in developing their games. So once this work is matured we’ll be able to actually see the games with ray tracing on the market.” Okay, so those partners, who are they? Is it a secret? Yep, not allowed to know. Sure we’ll find out soon enough.

Anyway, hardware this hardware that, we get it. This new chip is fast. But the main focus of the short presentation I received beforehand was “performance”, and performance comes from both hardware and software. And Samsung is also very keen to talk about the latter.

The company developed an adaptive AI algorithm to bring efficiency gains depending on what game you’re playing. I’m not very clever, so I couldn’t begin to fully understand how it all works, but I am intrigued if there could be a case where it doesn’t work correctly. Could a game trip up the algorithm?

“The adaptive algorithm didn’t happen overnight.” Glad we cleared that up. “It’s the result of our longtime development and collaboration… of course, you cannot say that it’s always 100% optimised… there could be some specific titles with software bugs or glitches.” Of course, if this does occur, Samsung says it will resolve the issue.

Samsung Won-Joon Choi interview - a black Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra next to pleasant geometric shapes in similar tones.

While this certainly isn’t the first time Samsung has focused on gaming performance, it feels like a concerted effort is going on to let people know that these lovely, shiny phones with big, excellent cameras can also pack a gaming punch. I’m not expecting the S24 to have RGB and a Doritos partnership, but how does Samsung plan to keep pushing the phone to please this market?

“As an engineer, there is always something I wish I could have incorporated in the development and thinking about my past history of launching many different products, I can say this confidently, I can say that S23 is very close to what we were looking for and what we were hoping for when we started planning. But, of course, it can never be 100% perfect.”

So, cards close the chest again. When I press further, Won-Joon says that Samsung listens to consumers and what they want. All I’d say is don’t expect passthrough charging or some other game-focused feature. These are still all-rounders, still flagships at the end of the day.

This flagship’s stats kind of makes Samsung the de facto leader against Apple, with the company pulling ahead of its primary Android competitors thanks to this Qualcomm partnership. While talking about other Android phones is nice and all, we all know that Samsung makes good phones (just google “best Android phone 2023”). So, Apple has to be the focus of comparison.

And, with Apple dominating Gen Z, according to a new report from the Financial Times – 34 per cent of all iPhone owners in the US are Gen Z, but only 10 per cent of Samsung users – how does the company plan to compete? I’m Gen Z. I recorded this interview on an iPhone. Is Samsung worried about convincing the younger generation?

Well, that’s hard to say. “It is the philosophy of Galaxy to cover the needs and wants of all age groups, not just Gen Z, and all of their needs and all of their values,” Won-Joon says. “Just like any other age group, we are always listening to the feedback of Gen Z so that we can deliver the values and the needs that they have so that they can love us even more.” So, Samsung wants to cater to everybody. How does that saying go again? Jack of all trades…?

Well, maybe that’s a bit mean. The Samsung S23 Ultra is a master at most of what it does. But it’s so hard to get under the surface here, no tactics or ideas for the future of Galaxy, just a reminder that the new thing the company made sure is powerful. Even if games leveraging that power are few and far between, at least you know the power is in there. Hidden away. Ready for the big day.
