Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising review – Eiyuden? Not bad, how are you?

Eiyuden Chronicles: Rising is something of an oddity. It’s a prequel to Eiyuden Chronicles: Hundred Heroes, a game due out next year, which is the spiritual successor to Suikoden, an RPG that saw enormous Kickstarter success, birthing the extra title I’m reviewing today. Rising, though, is a concoction of action, and simulation, with a splash of Metroidvania.

From 505 Games and developer Nastuma Atari, Eiyuden Chronicles: Rising is meant to introduce players to the world of the upcoming RPG, introducing a few of the characters from Hundred Heroes, while building up a small town that will also eventually feature in the incoming adventure. But, does it stand on its own as a game you should play today?

You play as a young adventurer called CJ who is on the search for a treasure known as Lenses. Her father was also an adventurer and found the biggest Lens ever discovered, so, CJ wants to carry on the legacy and become a treasure hunter known across the land. At the beginning of the game, she stumbles across the burgeoning town of New Nevaeu, with plenty of townsfolk in need of a helping hand.

The town has a few nearby locations full of treasure to plunder, but anyone hoping to explore them needs to earn an adventurers license, which can either be bought for astronomical amounts of money, or, you can fill in a stamp sheet, by earning stamps every time you assist a villager. Help someone build a new stall, grab some materials, reunite them with a lost cat, and so on; the townsfolk need plenty of help to bring the village to life, and they only have more tasks as the town slowly fills up with shops and new citizens.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising review: details are given for a character called CJ

The gameplay loop is a great idea. Explore dungeons, grab resources, head back to town, use the resources to build shops and equip better gear, and use better gear to explore even further in the dungeons. It almost makes me think of Moonlighter, where the split in gameplay gives greater meaning to resources you collect and makes the action that much more impactful for it. Sadly, the execution here isn’t quite on that level, as several small issues accumulate to make a game that instead stretches out its few disparate gameplay modes to create a wholly stagnant experience.

First up, as you explore, you use your pickaxe to attack enemies in real-time combat. Before long, a giant, greatsword-wielding, warrior Kangaroo called Garoo joins you, and eventually, a magic-user called Isha also folds into the party, adding ranged damage to proceedings. The main issue here, is that combat feels fairly slow and unresponsive. There are a good few moments between hitting the attack button and seeing anything happen, whichever character you use, and it leaves the combat feeling underwhelming to me throughout.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising review: three characters walk around a serene village

Now, the combat isn’t particularly involved, so this is almost forgivable. Enemies don’t do much of interest other than the odd boss fight, and, eventually, you get the chance to link together attacks from each party member, swapping between them every few strikes to chain together a devastating combo. It’s great, but again, it feels too floaty and lethargic to be satisfying. The action is also held back as weapon power is dictated by incremental improvements buried under menus and busywork, which I’ll come back to later.

The town building is the next big part of the game, and fixing up New Nevaeu from a stack of sticks and some nice ideas, to a bustling community, is somewhat lovely to watch. Crucially, Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising is a beautiful game to look at, with the player moving across a 2D axis, while a dynamic diorama of foliage, running water, and moving buildings pass in front and behind CJ as you move. To create most buildings, CJ must grab some resources or complete a task, which often results in the vendor opening (such as an item shop, a blacksmith, a weapon shop, etc) and CJ receiving another stamp for the stamp book.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising review: a small girl performs a uppercut kick

What drags this down is the sheer monotony. Dialogue is slow and clunky, movement feels too leisurely, and heading out to grab resources one by one, only to get sent out on a similar errand immediately after – to the same area – feels pointlessly drawn out. Unlocking the new vendors slowly adds new mechanics like the aforementioned abilities to improve weapons, the chance to buy items, and eventually, the improvements to weapons needed to break obstacles and explore new areas. I know gameplay elements need to be added over time, but a good chunk of the around 20 hours needed to complete this title are spent introducing new elements that eventually feel unnecessary.

The sheer number of times you go out to grab a single thing, then slowly shamble back to listen to bland dialogue (with no voice acting) only to go out and do the same thing is tedious. I don’t want to spend more time in menus or reading dialogue than I actually spend exploring and in combat. You’re also only pushing forward your exploration in the most minuscule ways. Sometimes you simply add one extra room to your map, before having to go back and listen to the blacksmith for a few minutes until you can go out again. The world is gorgeous, I want to go out and explore it untethered.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising review: a large Kangaroo attacks with a blue light em,minating from their great sword

The relationship between exploration, combat, and town building should feel symbiotic. Instead, the town feels like a rope just waiting to draw taught and pull you back to the beginning, only loosening its distance slightly once every couple of hours. The tasks should all just pop up immediately, letting you choose when to engage with different people. While also, the map could be a lot bigger, and offer more variety instead of simply walling off areas and forcing you to go down a single pre-destined path each time.

the disparate gameplay elements rob the title of any cohesive sense of fun

I’m not saying I didn’t have any fun, the combat is just mindless enough that I can relax while button bashing, and the simple task of picking up loads of resources and heading back to town still fired neurons in the most basic part of my monkey brain. This is probably a perfect podcast game for anyone determined to give it a go. But the execution around it feels so poorly thought out and artificially hampered. You even start out with a painfully small resource bag, just another way to kneecap the fun before you even have a chance to actually enjoy anything.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising review: a magical blue girl attacks a giant monster

Finally, Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising has a poor UI that really doesn’t help things. Quests are given very vague descriptions that can cause you to wander aimlessly, the fast travel is needlessly limited to only certain areas, weapon mechanics are weirdly buried in layers of different menus, and the text is tiny with zero options to enlarge it. I don’t want to sound like there’s nothing of value here, as there’s some charm and enjoyment to be found if it’s your sort of thing. Perhaps in a year from now when Hundred Heroes is released, this will work better as a companion piece and another way to visit these characters. But right now, it’s only given me doubts about the upcoming RPG.

YouTube Thumbnail

As a game on its own, Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising is a mixture of good ideas, beautiful visuals, and poor execution. I really thought I would enjoy the gameplay from its description, but instead, I sat there ticking off all my biggest gaming sins in a row, watching them sap the enjoyment out of an experience I wanted to love. The disparate gameplay elements rob the title of any cohesive sense of fun, and more than anything I’m disappointed that so much potential seems to be wasted by death by a thousand cuts of poor game design. I certainly hope Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes is more impressive than this.

Dungeons of Dreadrock review – no need to dread this one

There’s no shortage of games inspired by The Legend of Zelda. The series laid the groundwork for action and adventure games, so its influence still trickles down into most games released, just like new babies being born with a hint of Genghis Khan DNA.

That doesn’t mean it’s not worth paying homage to the series though, as there’s still so much space for fun new titles. Dungeons of Dreadrock certainly wears it’s influence on its sleeve, but through smart level design and some lovely presentation, does enough to step away from the tedium of pure mimicry, and offers up a unique and interesting experience.

You play as the sister of a young boy, who’s offered up as a sacrifice as part of an archaic ritual. To save your brother, you must explore 100 levels of a vast dungeon, each one holding a new puzzle or enemy that tests your reflexes and your wits. I’ve been playing it all week, and have come away fairly impressed. So read on for our thoughts in this mini-review.

Presented in a charming 16-bit style that looks straight from the SNES era, Dungeons of Dreadrock uses chunky sprites and thick black lines to good effect, making the protagonist and enemies easy to spot even in the darkest depths. While you won’t see too much variety as you explore the many levels of this huge dungeon, everything is presented in such a charming manner with new things popping up often enough to keep you hooked.

Dungeons of Dreadrock review: two guards stand outside a dungeon

Each level has a puzzle that revolves around combat, or some sort of environmental trap. You can only move in single steps, so you have to carefully plot and time your movements, almost like you do in Cadence of Hyrule. Most levels have a single way solution, as enemies and walls are situated in a way that you quickly meet your end unless you figure it out. You can restart with a simple tap of a button, and you’ll likely use this liberally, as you realise your mistakes and dive back in for one more go.

It’s not just 100 levels of stabbing foes though, as very quickly different obstacles pop up like floor traps and even teleportation points. Navigating these and slowly figuring out the optimal route for your character is really satisfying, and while there’s some action to be had, Dungeons of Dreadrock always feels like a puzzle game first. Just one with knives. Even later enemies, like the minotaur who launches at you with an unstoppable charge, are part of the puzzle that the level poses.

Dungeons of Dreadrock review: a character moves through a dungeon

I don’t want to go on too much about the different elements of the puzzles, as they’re all neat surprises to discover and solve. But trust me when I tell you there are new and interesting ideas that continue to change how you interact with the world throughout the 100 levels. It’s delightful to see a game just so full of fresh ideas, and one that executes them well. However, difficulty can spike quite wildly from one floor to the next, and a few got me frustrated looking for solutions, but most of the time, it’s the right level of brain teaser.

Dreadrock combines lovely presentation with satisfying puzzles to great effect

You can ask for a hint at any point, with three available in each level, ranging from a subtle clue, to basically “do this”. It’s very welcome, as it’s never fun to be stuck on one floor for too long. I did enjoy most of the levels I played, but even with clues, there’s the very occasional “you wanted me to do what?!’ That either points toward the answer being very obtuse, or perhaps me being a bit thick. A sharp mind with a lot of patience may get a lot more out of it than I did.

Dungeons of Dreadrock review: A character moves through a dungeon with a squid monster

I briefly touched on the presentation before, but there are a couple of things I want to bring up. One is, that almost every clue or scroll you read in the game is fully voiced, a dedicated and welcome addition that does a lot to add to the feel of this world. Secondly, when playing in handheld, the options to restart the level and to grab a clue are handily mapped as icons on the screen, ready for you to tap. Everything is well thought out and a lot of love has clearly been poured into the creation of this title.

I will say that the regular layout of controls is a bit bewildering, with the menu mapped to Y and action mapped to B like an Xbox controller. You can swap most of these in the options, but for some reason, there’s no option to map the menu to +. Not a huge deal, but it took me a minute or so to get the controls where I wanted them to be.

Dungeons of Dreadrock review: a character moves through a dungeon

There’s not much more to say about Dungeons of Dreadrock without ruining it, but know that it takes a very simple concept and expands it with great ideas all the way through its 100 levels. Taking cues from the best environmental puzzles in the dungeons of Zelda and many other games, Dreadrock combines lovely presentation (with massive and clear fonts, thank you!), with satisfying puzzles to great effect. A short game with plenty of heart, and a great choice for any Zelda fan desperate to try something new.

Reggie Fils-Aimé had to fight to pack Wii Sports with the Wii

The previous president of Nintendo of America – Reggie Fils-Aime – has revealed some details from his tenure in his new book, Disrupting the Game. In an interview with The Washington Post, Reggie goes into detail about his time at the company, including how hard he fought to convince Miyamoto that Wii Sports should be included with every single Wii. A fight he eventually won, and is partly responsible for the Wii Sports and motion control phenomenon of the 2000s.

In the book, he details his conversation with Miyamoto, where they argued that perhaps Wii Play could be included with the Wii instead. Reggie then suggested that Wii Play would be great to sell with a new Wii remote, but it has to be Wii Sports packed in with the Wii. Reggie recalls Miyamoto’s response, saying “Neither of you understands the challenges of creating software that people love to play. This is something we constantly push ourselves to do. We do not give away our software.”

Reggie also goes into detail about the fan campaign to release Mother 3 in the West, as it became a constant question asked of the former president at press events. In an interview with Geoff Keighley later in the book, Reggie explains “there was a serious conversation during the Nintendo 3DS days, and as we launched the Wii U,” before following with “If Mr Iwata had not passed away, if maybe the Wii U had done better in the marketplace, maybe the Mother 3 game would have made it at that point.”

For even more from the former NoA president, you can check out his interview with the IGN podcast Nintendo Voice Chat below, covering his time at the company and his new book.

Coin Master free spins links, tips, codes, and FAQs

Wondering how to get Coin Master free spins? You’ve come to the right place. This is an addictive mobile game by design. It combines the thrill of playing slots with the social battling of Clash of Clans to create something that you just can’t put down; in a good way. The problem is, you so often have to put it down if you’re not willing to fork out the cash for regular spins. That’s understandable when as little as 30 spins will set you back £1.99 in the UK or $1.99 in the US.

How can I get Coin Master free spins?

Here are a bunch of tips to help you get even more free spins in Coin Master.

Follow coin master on social media

Each day, Moon Active, Coin Master’s developer, provides a bunch of links that you can follow to get your hands on Coin Master free spins. If you keep on top of this, you can get a steady stream of free stuff for very little effort. You can follow Coin Master on Facebook or Twitter.

Sign up for email gifts

If you sign up for email gifts, you can get yourself a handful of Coin Master free spins every single day just by following a link on your phone. We haven’t encountered any spam from signing up so far either, so it’s a quick and easy method of getting yourself some tasty free spins.

Invite friends

Each time you invite a friend who successfully joins Coin Master through Facebook, you’ll get 40 Coin Master free spins, which is considerable. They don’t even have to actually play the game; they simply have to download it and log in via their Facebook account to get you the free spins. Of course, it’s in both your interests to actually play it, which brings us nicely to our next point.

A wagon full of coins, the owner must have redeemed some of our Coin Master free spins links

Request spins as gifts

You can get up to 100 Coin Master free spins per day from friends, though to get to those heights you’ll need 100 active friends who are kind enough to send you a gift each day. Each gift consists of a single free spin.

Unless you’re incredibly popular, it’s highly unlikely that you’ll have 100 friends; let alone 100 that will actually deign to play a game with you. We recommend heading on over to the official Reddit community or Facebook communities to try and find people willing to play with you.

Watch video ads

You can get a limited number of Coin Master free spins per day by watching a video ad. Simply scroll to the slot machine and tap on the spin energy button on the bottom right. If it’s not there, you’ve run out of free spins you can get through this method for the day, but if it is, simply tap on it and you’ll watch an ad.

Spin

Ironically, you can actually get a ton of Coin Master free spins by, well, spinning. If you get three spin energy symbols in a row, you’ll get a bunch of free spins. Pick up a chain of them and you can spin for ages before you run out.

Level up your village

Each time you level up your village, you’ll get a bunch of Coin Master free spins. It’s not easy though, as it costs a considerable amount of gold to purchase new buildings and improve them, and you have to purchase every single one of them, including improvements, to level up. That’s going to cost a lot of spins, as it is.

Participate in events

There’s almost always at least one event happening in Coin Master, and it can absolutely shower you with free spins. While viewing the slot machine, look at the top right of the screen. Any virtual buttons that you can see beneath the menu (which is displayed as three lines) is an event. Tap on one and you’ll see what each event involves.

Take advantage of these events and you can get yourself a lot more Coin Master free spins than usual.

Wait

This is an obvious suggestion, but it’s actually worth taking into consideration. You get five free spins every single hour, and you can only hold a maximum of 50 spins at any one time. That means every ten hours you’ll hit the maximum number of spins, and any Coin Master free spins you would have earned after that will cease to exist.

So, we recommend setting a reminder to visit Coin Master every ten hours at least to spend your spins so you are always earning more. You’ll actually end up earning a huge number of extra spins if you’re dedicated, so it’s totally worth doing.

The best VPN for Android

If you want to browse the internet privately on your phone, while enjoying region-exclusive content, you may find yourself looking for the best VPN for Android. It’s very reasonable to want one too, since your phone is one of the many avenues through which internet services providers are accumulating private information about you.

So which is the best VPN for Android? Well, good question. There are loads of VPN providers after all, and who has time to look over all of them? Apart from us (since that’s our job). To save you the arduous task of checking the details of an endless list of providers, we’ve picked out three stand-out choices for you to consider.

Below, we’ve got overviews of these VPN providers for you, detailing the unique benefits of what each of them provide. Of course, all three of them have an Android app, making it as simple as possible to use them on your phone.

The best VPNs for Android are:

  • Surfshark
  • NordVPN
  • AtlasVPN
Get it here

Surfshark

Just as a shark has a seemingly unlimited number of teeth as you stare into its gaping maw, Surfshark’s VPN service allows you to have an unlimited number of simultaneous connections. That’s particularly handy for anyone who has a large household that they want to keep private online.

Surfshark customers will have a selection of over 3,200 servers to choose from, which are spread between 65 countries. If you want to download region-exclusive games, or get region-exclusive bonuses in games you already play, this should make it easy for you to do so. Meanwhile, as it is compatible with most major streaming services, you could turn your phone into an international entertainment centre.

Surfshark
Locations 3,200+ servers in 65 countries
Services unblocked Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, BBC iPlayer, Hulu, YouTube
Free trial length 7 days
Money-back guarantee 30 days
Simultaneous connections Unlimited
Router support Yes

NordVPN

NordVPN is a provider that probably needs no introduction, but we’re going to introduce it anyway because we don’t want to make assumptions. Since its humble origins back in 2012, NordVPN has grown to become the biggest fish in the VPN pond.

NordVPN has over 5,000 servers across 60 different countries, and its service is one of the fastest solutions for anyone seeking a VPN. This might come in particularly handy if you’re planning to use it to relocate yourself to other countries in Pokémon GO, where you’re not going to want to deal with lag as soon as a shiny regional Pokémon appears.

NordVPN
Locations 5,308 servers in 60 countries
Services unblocked Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, BBC iPlayer, Hulu, YouTube
Free trial length No free trial
Money-back guarantee 30 days
Simultaneous connections 6
Router support Yes
Get it here

AtlasVPN

Well, look at that: another VPN provider that allows you to use an unlimited number of simultaneous connections. That’s sure to come in handy for anyone who wants to use it, not only for their android phone, but also their gaming consoles, home computer, smart TV, and any other devices they might have.

Though they don’t have quite as many servers (750 across 37 locations), they’re also a little bit cheaper than Surfshark and NordVPN, so the lack of servers might be a good trade off, especially when you still get the unlimited connections. They also have a completely free plan that you might want to use, although if you go for that one, there are only three servers to choose from- not that it isn’t still a great option.

Atlas VPN
Locations 750 servers in 37 locations
Services unblocked Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Disney+, Hulu, YouTube
Free trial length Free version available
Money-back guarantee 30 days
Simultaneous connections Unlimited
Router support No

Sign up for MementoMori pre-registration and fight the curse

If you like narrative-driven games and enjoy idle gameplay, Bank of Innovation’s upcoming game is bound to interest you, and MementoMori pre-registrations are now open, so you can already show your interest in the game. By all accounts, this mobile title looks stunning, especially with its watercolour aesthetic.

So, since you can already sign up for MementoMori pre-registration, it’s only right to have a quick look at what the game entails, even if there aren’t a ton of details surrounding the title at the moment. Firstly, when it comes to the story, it centres around witches, and how those in the lands in which MementoMori takes place have come to despise them.

As such, it’s a fearful time for witches, with those caught and condemned sentenced to death thanks to the witch hunt. However, those that the Church of Longinus fear, might just be the ones to offer salvation, as, one day, a certain type of madness consumes the world, and while it causes some evil witches to rise up, some young girls with an affinity for magic themselves take a stand.

Yes, these innocent girls are cursed to be witches, but they prepare to save not only themselves, but the world and its inhabitants, too.

YouTube Thumbnail

The game features an idle system on top of a range of RPG mechanics, so you’re characters can increase in strength, even if you’re not in control – a handy feature for those that don’t have much time to spare.

Where can I sign up for MementoMori pre-registration?

For now, it’s only available to iOS users via the App Store. However, MementoMori pre-registrations are coming to Android users at a later date. If you need even more of an incentive to sign up, there are milestone rewards on offer. You can find full pre-registration details here.

If you need something to keep you busy in the meantime, you can’t go wrong with our lists of the best iPhone games and best Android games – there’s a title for everyone here.

The best music games for Switch and mobile – take notes

Ever since the days of Parappa the Rapper back on the original PlayStation and dance mats in arcades, I’ve absolutely loved great music games. Thankfully so do many developers, who are carrying the torch to deliver some exciting games with incredible soundtracks on modern devices.

So, what are the best music games for Switch and mobile? Well, there are a lot of fun tools for music creation here, as well as some rhythm games, or games that just work alongside a stellar soundtrack. Not every title needs to be a rhythm game to be a good music game, and sometimes it’s about just getting lost in the music of the world. With some great indie picks as well as bigger releases, this is a great selection of titles.

If you’re a big music game fan, then make sure you also check out our guide to the best Switch rhythm games for some similar picks. Are we missing your favourite music game on this list? Let us know and we’ll do our best to update this list in the future.

Here is our guide to the best music games on Switch and mobile.

The best music games on Switch and mobile

Best music games: a pastel scene shows a small bardPlay Now

Wandersong – Switch

A whimsical, musical, puzzle adventure game. Wandersong is a music-themed game starring The Bard, where you go on an exciting quest to gather the many pieces of a sign that could save the world from destruction. It’s an endearing and earnest game that wears its heart on its sleeve. It also has fun musical puzzle elements where you control the song that The Bard sings, using it to solve many tricky situations. A great game for younger players and anyone with a song in their heart.

Best music games: a virtual synthesizer is shownPlay Now

Korg Gadget for Nintendo Switch – Switch

Are you a synthesiser nut, and love the idea of fiddling with knobs and adjusting wavelengths? Well, legendary manufacturer Korg has made software specifically for the Nintendo Switch that emulates some of its most iconic sounds. Playing around with synths on the touch screen is very intuitive, and you can sequence and compose songs all within the app. It’s a little bit limited compared to a real synth so you won’t find any MIDI functionality, but it’s still a great toy for the synth nerds out there (it’s me, I love you Korg).

Best music games: a game of tetris is being played while wild visuals flurry aroundPlay Now

Tetris Effect: Connected – Switch

Every time you think you could be sick of Tetris, it turns out the formula is so perfect that even a slight shake-up is enough to bring you back in. Tetris Effect: Connected is a classic Tetris game at its core, but it’s all about the presentation. Each level features interactive music and visuals, that react when you clear lines.

The matching of gameplay to the soundtrack is borderline euphoric, especially on the later levels where things get truly tricky. There are relaxing chill-out modes if you just want to unwind, and a few interesting multiplayer modes for local and online multiplayer. If you’ve ever played Tetris just to relax, this is the perfect game for you. Check out our full Tetris Effect: Connected review for more.

Best music games: a DJ plays music to a crowdPlay Now

Fuser – Switch

We might not have DJ Hero anymore, but Fuser is the next best thing. With a library jam-packed full of great licensed tracks that everyone will recognise, Fuser is part DJ game and part festival simulator, as you see how the crowd reacts to your mixes, while trying to rise up the ranks to become a superstar DJ.

The actual matching is great, as songs are broken up into four different stems, so you can play the drums from one track into the vocals of another, and mix everything in between. It’s a great toy if nothing else, but luckily, the game around the core concept is pretty great as well.

Best music games: several characters from Kingdom Hearts jump over music notesPlay Now

Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory – Switch

A little bit more niche, but I’ve been assured that this is a great entry if you’re a fan of the world’s most confusing video game series. Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory is a rhythm game where players control Sora, Goofy, and Donald along a track and must attack and react in time with the music.

The series is known for its stellar soundtrack, so a musical interpretation is very welcome. It might be light on the lore, but like most entries, Melody of Memory still stakes its place somewhere on the continuing Kingdom Hearts timeline. Check out our Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory review for more.

Best music games: a screenshot shows a trippy metallic rhythm gamePlay Now

Thumper – Switch and mobile

An intense action rhythm game with a pumping soundtrack, succinctly, Thumper absolutely slaps. It’s an on-rails rhythm game where players must react to obstacles on the track with lightning speed, and things gradually get more intense and complicated. The trippy visuals add a sense of foreboding, adding some extra punch to the already energetic score. It gets seriously tricky as things go on, and luckily you can play this title on just about any platform you can imagine.

Best music games: a screenshot shows a mobile rhythm game

Cytus II – mobile

From Rayark Games, the creator of DEEMO, VOEZ, and the original Cytus comes the exciting sequel. Using a unique gameplay element called the ‘active judgement line’ Cytus II is a demanding music game that features a huge library of great tracks from across the world. There are over 800 different charts to play through in fact, so you can get your rhythm fix for dozens of hours.

Download Cytus II now for iOS devices or on the Google Play store now.

Right, beat it. That’s it for our guide to the best music games on Switch and mobile but check back for updates in the future. If you need something else to play, be sure to check out our guide to the best Switch games next.
