Theatrhythm Final Bar Line may hit all the right notes

I must have spent hundreds of hours attempting to get SS rankings on every song in Theatrhythm Final Fantasy on the 3DS way back in 2012. So, when Square Enix revealed a new game in the difficult-to-spell series, I was more than excited to give the game a go on Nintendo Switch.

For those of you who have no idea what to expect from Theatrhythm, let me give you a quick rundown. Final Bar Line is a rhythm game that features almost 400 tracks from Final Fantasy, with planned DLC for Nier, Live A Live, and more tracks down the line. A very simple, easy-to-learn, hard-to-master game with a very defined audience of JRPG and rhythm game fans.

Before I get into my thoughts, it’s worth noting that the Theatrhythm Final Bar Line Switch demo is fairly limited. I chose to unlock some tunes from OG Final Fantasy VII as it’s my favourite in the series, and I was able to play five songs in total before being blocked off from more. I also accidentally chose to watch a video included in one of the many ads it showed me for the game and I couldn’t skip it so beware, lest you be trapped when you’re dying to play.

As my time with the game is so limited right now, I don’t want to comment too much on certain areas, but going from my current experience, the game is missing a beat or two that you can find in the 3DS version of the game.

Theatrhythm Final Bar Line review - a red guard scorpion showing you which song is next

For some reason, Final Bar Line on Switch doesn’t include touchscreen controls, as it does on the 3DS version, which is odd, as tapping, swiping, and holding the stylus on the screen in the original was very satisfying and worked like a dream. I do find it slightly fiddly when I have to press a direction on both analogue sticks at the same time as the Switch Joy-Cons don’t have that comfortable a layout at the best of times.

I think the jarring stops I had to face after each level for an ad also made it so I couldn’t get in a good flow, but once again, this is only going to be a problem in the demo I’m sure the flow of the full game is smooth as butter, I just can’t be sure of that right now.

In saying that, the general Final Bar Line vibes are very similar to the original game back on 3DS. You build a team of four chibi characters from numerous Square Enix IP, side-scroll across familiar backgrounds, and tap away at your Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons to the beat of some absolutely classic tunes.

I don’t think the game will surpass your expectations, but it will meet them, as it does exactly what it says on the tin. It’s a Final Fantasy rhythm game, and even with the limited roster of songs I got to play, I found myself bopping my head with a silly grin on and even managed to get SS rank on a couple of expert songs within my first half an hour of play. So, definitely try out the demo, then come back here and read my full review once I’ve played more.

Pop Up Mario looks like a barrel of laughs

The Super Mario Bros. movie is mere months away from release, and as the hype train speeds up, we’re sure to receive much more movie merchandise. On that note, today Tomy and Nintendo announced a collaboration between the toy-makers and the video game titans to develop a spin-off of the classic game Pop-Up Pirate. Pop-Up Mario is coming soon, and we’re very excited.

Set to release in March, Pop-Up Mario sees the portly plumber placed in a green pipe, and players must stick pins into it, hoping not to be the player that causes Mario to leap out with a joyous ‘WAHOO’. Designed as a family game for ages four and up, the Pop-Up Pirate game is a classic seen in many family homes for decades, so a version based on Mario is a fun way for newer players to experience the fun.

We’re sure this isn’t the wackiest piece of Mario merch promoting the upcoming movie, but it’s one of the most fun pieces to pop up so far. With any luck, Nintendo might actually announce a Super Mario game this year to capitalise on the brand’s popularity, but we wouldn’t bet on it.

If the announcement of Pop-Up Mario has got you shooting out of a pipe with joy, get a glimpse of the Super Mario Bros. movie with the full reveal trailer below.

Snipperclips slips onto the Nintendo Switch Online game trial soon

In terms of launch games for the Nintendo Switch, Breath of the Wild still rules the pack, but one little title also has a substantial audience and remains one of the most entertaining puzzle titles on the platform. Well, if you’re in the mood for a new puzzle title, the Snipperclips Nintendo Switch Online game trial is the perfect opportunity.

Nintendo Switch Online members in the EU are able to download and play Snipperclips on the Nintendo Switch, starting from January 27, 2023, and lasting until February 3, 2023. That’s plenty of time to power through the title’s many fun puzzles, as long as you can avoid arguing with your pals long enough to actually get some things done!

If you’re yet to give it a try, Snipperclips is a physics-based puzzle game in which players control the titular Snipperclip, and must cut each other into specific shapes to get through its many challenges. For example, you can cut yourself into a point to pop balloons, make a hole to catch a ball, and so much more. It’s wholesome family fun, and this free demo is the perfect time to give it a try.

If you want to get a glimpse of the adorable puzzle title, check out the Snipperclips launch trailer below.

Marvel Snap is giving out credits, gold, and boosters to celebrate the New Year, but the best gift in our opinion is the special Sword Master card variant which is themed to feature a traditional lion dance dragon. The card comes with an exclusive ‘Happy Lunar New Year’ title for your profile.

A total of 400 gold, 150 credits, 35 Jubilee boosters, and 35 Sword Master boosters can be redeemed between January 22 and 28.

The next Steamworld game for Nintendo Switch set to be revealed soon

It’s been several years since Steamworld Quest, and even longer since classic titles such as Steamworld Dig 2, and the often-forgotten (but utterly brilliant) Steamworld Heist, so we’ve been hankering for a new Steamworld game for some time. Luckily, the developer heard our prayers, as Thunderful Games announced the Steamworld Special Broadcast, set to unveil “what’s next for the series” very soon.

The Steamworld Special Broadcast is on January 23, at 6:30 PM CET/5:30 PM GMT/9:30 AM PST, while the announcement says to keep an eye on the Steamworld Games Twitter account to find out where to watch the broadcast next week. We imagine the company will unveil a YouTube or twitch link closer to the time, so fans can watch live at the unveiling of an exciting new title.

While there’s no announcement as to the sort of game or even platforms, almost every single Steamworld game so far is on Nintendo Switch, and in many cases, they’ve hit Nintendo hardware before launching on other consoles months down the line. If history is anything to go by, we expect the latest game to launch on Nintendo Switch first, and then reach PS4/5 and Xbox consoles around six months later. Still, we don’t have long to wait, as we’ll learn more next week.

While we wait for official word on where to watch the Steamworld Special broadcast, get a glimpse of the most recent Steamworld game to hit Nintendo Switch with the Steamworld Quest trailer below.
