Apple has released a new version of Safari Technology Preview with features included in the company’s upcoming macOS Ventura update.

Safari Technology Preview is an experimental browser designed to test features that could be released in new versions of Safari. The company on Tuesday released Safari Technology Preview 147, with several macOS Ventura features.

The new browser version includes Live Text, support for Apple Passkeys, and improved Safari Web Extensions, among other features. However, some features are missing, such as Tab Groups syncing, Website Settings, and Web Extensions.

With the release, users who are currently on macOS Monterey will be able to test out some of those new features without downloading the beta version of macOS Ventura.

Apple’s full release notes for the Safari Technology Preview version are available below.

Live Text. Select and interact with text in videos or translate text in images on the web in macOS Ventura betas on Apple Silicon-based Macs.

Web technologies. Experience and test the HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and other web technologies that are available in Safari 16 Beta and included in previous Safari Technology Preview releases.

Web Push. Send notifications to people who opt-in on your website or web app with Safari Technology Preview on macOS Ventura betas.

Passkeys. Preview the new type of phishing-resistant credential that makes signing in to websites safer and easier. Available through Safari’s WebAuthn platform authenticator. To learn more about passkeys, see Meet passkeys.

Improved Safari Web Extensions. Test out API improvements including the ability to open a Safari Web Extension popover programmatically.

Web Inspector Extensions. Build custom tooling or convert existing developer tools extensions to use in Web Inspector.

Flexbox Inspector. Use the new visualization overlay in Web Inspector to help you more quickly and easily understand the layout of elements with Flexbox. It marks both the free space and gaps between flex items to reveal how they affect the result.

Ex-Apple engineer explains why the first iPhone didn’t have copy and paste

AppleInsider is supported by its audience and may earn commission as an Amazon Associate and affiliate partner on qualifying purchases. These affiliate partnerships do not influence our editorial content.

The very first iPhone that was released in 2007 didn’t actually have any sort of copy and paste functionality, and a former Apple engineer may have finally explained why.

Ken Kocienda joined Apple in 2001 and was a key engineer on the team that developed the first iPhone. On Sunday, Kocienda shared an amusing anecdote detailing why the first-generation Apple handset didn’t have copy and paste.

According to Kocienda, the short answer is that the team didn’t have time to “do it right” before the first iPhone shipped. The former Apple engineer said that he was busy working on the device’s keyboard, autocorrect, and text functionality.

Eventually, sometime after the iPhone’s debut, the team got to work on copy and paste functionality. Kocienda added that the “magnifying text loupe,” which would zoom in on the text a user had their finger on, was his idea.

Another interesting tidbit Kocienda shared had to do with the text system on the first iPhone. Specifically, the engineer said that WebKit powered virtually all of the text.

“About the text system, all editable styled text on the original iPhone was backed by WebKit,” he said. “The system had itty bitty web pages sprinkled here and there. Every multiline UITextView was its own web page.”

Kocienda said he was well-prepared for that task, since he added text editing to WebKit between 2003 and 2005.

Telegram plans premium service after topping 700M active users

AppleInsider is supported by its audience and may earn commission as an Amazon Associate and affiliate partner on qualifying purchases. These affiliate partnerships do not influence our editorial content.

Telegram, the privacy-focused messaging app, will be offering users a new premium service in the future, in a bid to monetize its sizable user base.

Telegram is free for its users to send messages to others, but doesn’t currently offer any premium features. In a change currently being worked on by the service, Telegram Premium will provide subscribers with enhanced features to make it more useful.

The premium tier was initially confirmed by the company to TechCrunch, but didn’t go into great detail about the revenue-generating plan at the time. Pricing for the premium tier is $4.99 per month.

As for what users could expect for the fee, a blog post explains Telegram Premium will offer an increase for sending large files, growing from a 2GB limit to 4GB, as well as prioritizing faster downloads for paid users. Users will also see the number of channels they could follow upgraded from 500 to 1,000, and produce up to 20 chat folders with up to 200 chats held in each one.

Premium users will also be allowed to add up to four accounts to an app, pin up to 10 chats for easier reading, write a longer bio, and reserve up to 20 public t.me links. There’s also voice-to-text conversion, full-screen animations for stickers, unique reactions, chat management options, animated profile pictures, and a special badge.

In some countries, ads won’t display in public channels for Premium users.

Telegram says it will be the first time an instant messaging app with hundreds of millions of users will roll out a premium tier of service. It also insists the development is “driven primarily by its users, not advertisers,” with founder and chief executive Pavel Durov commenting earlier in June that Premium is in response to user demand relating to storage and bandwidth.

The move will also help Telegram stabilize its income sustainably while it continues to grow. After reaching 500 million monthly active users in January 2021, it has now reached 700 million users.

Maryland Apple Store first to vote in favor of unionization

AppleInsider is supported by its audience and may earn commission as an Amazon Associate and affiliate partner on qualifying purchases. These affiliate partnerships do not influence our editorial content.

In a clear majority, employees at the Towson Town Center, Maryland Apple Store have voted to form a union, and the ball is now in Apple’s court.

The vote was 65 employees in favor, and 33 against unionization. This is in line with expectations, and will give the employees a supermajority, making it harder Apple to overcome the formation of the union.

“I applaud the courage displayed by CORE members at the Apple store in Towson for achieving this historic victory,” said IAM international president Robert Martinez Jr. said on Saturday to the Wall Street Journal. “They made a huge sacrifice for thousands of Apple employees across the nation who had all eyes on this election.”

The Towson Town Center store near Baltimore wasn’t the first to file to unionize. Apple Stores in New York, and also Atlanta, in their aim to unionize.

When originally announced, organizers within the store said that they have worked on getting support for almost a year. They worked in coordination with the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers to launch the union at the store.

It’s not yet clear what the terms of the deal will be. Organizers in the two previous stores have been pressing for an increase in the current starting pay of $20 per hour, and Apple has since promised to pay $22 per hour.

Workers at the Cumberland Mall store in Atlanta, for example, are asking for an increase to $28 per hour. Employees in the Grand Central Station Apple Store in New York are asking for an increase in the starting wage to $30.

Apple’s retail chief Deirdre O’Brien pushed back against recent unionization efforts at some of the company’s brick-and-mortar locations in a new video to staff members. She has said that the efforts could slow workplace progress and potentially harm the relationship between Apple and its employees.

The company has recently been accused of violating the National Labor Relations Act and countering an ongoing union drive at Apple Cumberland Mall in Georgia.

Apple has yet to comment on the matter.

Apple releases M2-specific macOS Monterey 12.4 update ahead of MacBook Pro release

AppleInsider is supported by its audience and may earn commission as an Amazon Associate and affiliate partner on qualifying purchases. These affiliate partnerships do not influence our editorial content.

Ahead of the 14-inch MacBook Pro release, Apple has updated macOS Monterey with a small revision specifically for the Apple Silicon M2 processor.

The macOS Monterey update arrives a full month after macOS 12.4 was first released to the public. However, it appears to be an updated directed at Macs running an M2 processor, which aren’t available for purchase yet.

Only those with the M2 processor will receive the update. Presumably, pre-release review models are the only active M2 Macs outside of Apple.

The update uses the same macOS 12.4 version number, but it has an increased build number. It is build number 21F2092, up from 21F79.

Apple announced a new MacBook Air with the M2 processor during WWDC 2022, but it still doesn’t have a pre-order or ship date. The 13-inch MacBook Pro was also updated with the M2, with pre-orders beginning Friday, June 17 and orders shipping June 24.

Hands on with the new Apple Watch faces in watchOS 9

AppleInsider is supported by its audience and may earn commission as an Amazon Associate and affiliate partner on qualifying purchases. These affiliate partnerships do not influence our editorial content.

Even without third-party faces, watchOS 9 is still set to deliver some new face designs for Apple users. We’re going hands-on with all of the new faces, as well as the newly-updated faces.

We installed the initial developer beta of watchOS 9 on our Apple Watch to test the new faces for ourselves. It’s been about a week and we love some of the improvements Apple has made.

    New faces for Apple Watch

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oF3iiKNx8gE]

    Lunar

One of the most touted by Apple is its new Lunar watch face. This new face “depicts the relationship between the Gregorian calendar and lunar calendar.” according to Apple. The moon is highlighted atop a field of subtle stars.

You’re able to choose between the Chinese, Hebrew, or Islamic calendars. This will depict the calendar around the face in relation to the phase of the moon. As you rotate the Digital Crown, the dates will rotate around the moon as the light moves across its face.

The Lunar face on Apple Watch with watchOS 9

The Lunar face on Apple Watch with watchOS 9

This face supports four complications, one in each corner. The date is perpetually denoted at the bottom of the face so it does not need to occupy one of the dedicated complication slots.

Further customization includes color options for the second hand and the choice between analog and digital for the time-telling method in the center of the face.

    Playtime

For a more lighthearted face, there is the new Playtime choice. This is a collaboration between Apple and famed artist Joi Fulton.

This face features four characters hovering on-screen. Each character is shaped like one of the numerical digits in the current time.

The Playtime face, including when dimmed (center) and when they bump into the glass (right)

The Playtime face, including when dimmed (center) and when they bump into the glass (right)

The characters float, dangling little feet as they sway. When tapped, they react by bouncing back. As the characters come swinging back towards their original position, they “bump” into the glass of your Apple Watch, causing them to go cross-eyed for a moment.

If you have an Apple Watch with an always-on display, when it goes idle and dims the brightness, the characters fall asleep. The screen goes dark with just a bit of blue moonlight cast across the dozing characters with their eyes closed.

Customization for this face includes your choice of background colors and your on/off preference for the confetti hovering behind the characters. Unfortunately, no complications are supported.

    Metropolitan

Possibly our favorite of the new faces is Metropolitan. This face has been inspired by traditional timepieces and looks like a more typical watch face.

    Metroplitan face

    Metroplitan face

There’s a circular face with tick marks at regular intervals. You can choose whether to have no numbers, some numbers, or all 12 hours displayed. The dial has four looks, combining a white center, dark center, light background, or dark background. You have your choice of colors as well.

When your watch awakes from sleep, the numbers animate in. During sleep mode, they are just lines, but the lines rotate to reveal the hour as it awakens.

Like others, it supports four complications, one in each corner. There’s no option for a center complication.

    Updated faces for Apple Watch

Some faces Apple has tweaked, bringing improved graphics, more color choices, and other enhancements. For example, some faces now support rich complications for the first time which can display more information.

The biggest updates are coming to Astronomy, Portrait, Modular, Modular Compact, and X-Large.

    Astronomy

This popular face has all-new visuals that are much more detailed than in years past. Both the Earth and the moon look incredible and more realistic. The dark side of the Earth for example has tiny little lights in the populated areas.

    The updated Astronomy face

    The updated Astronomy face

For the first time, you can choose the font for the time and you can opt for a random view between earth, moon, or the solar system.

Other features are still here such as the ability to spin the planet with your finger and see it over time by rotating the Digital Crown.

    Modular, Modular Compact, and X-Large

All three of these faces — Modular, Modular Compact, and X-Large — were updated with watchOS 9 to support background colors. You can choose from the huge array of colors Apple continues to add.

    New BG color options

    New BG color options

So now instead of just black, the background can be rainbow, solid-colored, or gradient. The gradients look especially good. Color choices are red, clover, Abyss Blue, orange, Starlight, green, and blue.

These colors will fade away when dimmed and will slightly tint the icons and widgets on the screen.

    Portrait

With the Portrait face, it now supports more than just people. Your dog or cat can be added to the Portrait face as well. Your pet can overlap the time creating a great depth effect.

    Portrait face now supports pets

    Portrait face now supports pets

If you’d like, you can edit the photos to tint the background layers. This brings more focus to the subject and helps pull them from the background.

When you rotate the Digital Crown, your pet’s face will increase in size over the background, enhancing the depth effect further.

    Coming soon

At the moment, iOS 16 is currently in developer beta. A public beta is scheduled to be released in July before a full release this fall. Stay tuned to AppleInsider as we walk through more features for Apple’s upcoming software updates.

Vintage Apple check for $9.18 signed by Steve Jobs expect to fetch over $25,000

AppleInsider is supported by its audience and may earn commission as an Amazon Associate and affiliate partner on qualifying purchases. These affiliate partnerships do not influence our editorial content.

Three rare Apple items have hit the auction block, including a Steve Jobs autographed copy of a Time Magazine cover, a functional Apple-1, and a vintage Apple check.

Another batch of Apple collectables have come up for auction, this time as part of Boston-based RR Auction’s Remarkable Rarities collection.

One item in the collection, a check, is particularly noteworthy as it bares both Jobs’ signature and a header that reads “Apple Computer Company.” Moreover, it’s dated July 23, 1976 — the year Apple was founded.

“[T]he check uses Apple’s first official address at “770 Welch Rd., Ste. 154, Palo Alto”— the location of an answering service and mail drop that they used while still operating out of the famous Jobs family garage,” the auction listing reads. “In very fine condition. Encapsulated in a PSA/DNA authentication holder.”

The check is anticipated to sell for at least $25,000.

Also included in the auction is a functional Apple-1 computer, hand-numbered by Steve Jobs.

The computer, which comes from personal computing pioneer Roger Wagner’s collection, is being sold with all components and accessories required for operation. It is listed as #12 on the Apple-1 Registry.

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tIB5fNs6-cU]

Wagner is known for authoring the first book on assembly-language programming for the Apple II.

    • original Apple-1 board, marked in the hand of Steve Jobs with stock number “01-0068”
    • original Apple Cassette Interface (ACI) with manual
    • original Apple II keyboard with Apple-1 cable adapter
    • Apple-1 Basic cassettes
    • Panasonic RQ413S Portable Cassette Tape Recorder/Player
    • Taxan Model KG-12NU-Y 12″ Display Monitor
    • CFFA1-CF card adapter for Apple-1
    • Replica Apple-1 Operation Manual signed in black felt tip by Steve Wozniak

Apple-1 expert Corey Cohen has rated the condition of the set as 7.0/10 and will offer a comprehensive, technical condition report to qualified bidders. The set includes a full letter of authenticity from PSA/DNA for Jobs’ handwriting on the board.

The Apple-1 is anticipated to bring in over $450,000.

Lastly, the auction includes a Jobs-autographed cover of the February 1982 issue of Time Magazine.

Included with the cover is the original Apple Computer mailing envelope, postmarked at Cupertino, California, on March 17, 1982.

All three auctions end on June 23.

RR Auction is holding another auction of Apple memorabilia, including photographs, manuals, and other artifacts signed by Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne.
