With more and more players continuing to distinguish themselves in the game, Blizzard Entertainment today announced the creation of the Overwatch League—a world-class sports ecosystem for professional Overwatch competition. Combining Blizzard’s esports pedigree with the best practices of major professional sports, the Overwatch League will focus on long-term stability for teams as well as opportunities for players to establish the types of professional careers associated with traditional sports.

“The Overwatch League represents not only the pinnacle of Overwatch competition, but also a genuine career opportunity for the most skilled Overwatch players,” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. “We’re building a league that’s accessible to players and fans, sustainable, and exciting for everyone involved.”

At the start of the season, Blizzard will host a combine, where eligible players who have previously distinguished themselves in competition will be invited to try out for teams. Players at the combine will be evaluated across a range of tests, giving teams the opportunity to sign those who best round out their rosters. Anyone picked up by a team during the signing period will be guaranteed a contract that includes a baseline minimum salary and benefits package.

To support the growth and sustainability of local fan bases, Overwatch League teams will represent major cities from different regions. Once these city-based teams have been admitted to the league, their spots will be secured, giving them the best opportunity to grow and thrive for years to come.

Team announcements and additional Overwatch League information will be shared in the coming months. In the meantime, players who aspire to compete in the Overwatch League should continue making a name for themselves in Overwatch.

Azeroth Burns With Excitement for Legion!

Blizzard’s new expansion for #1 MMORPG matches launch-day record with 3.3 million sold

Heroes of the Horde and the Alliance from around the globe unite as World of Warcraft achieves highest launch-week player concurrency since Cataclysm®

IRVINE, Calif.—September 8, 2016— With Azeroth on the brink of destruction, heroes from around the world were summoned to drive back the Burning Legion’s armies last week with the launch of World of Warcraft®Legion, the sixth expansion to Blizzard Entertainment’s acclaimed massively multiplayer online role-playing game. Today, Blizzard announced that players have forged a truly formidable defensive front—as of the expansion’s first full day of launch on August 30, more than 3.3 million copies of Legion had sold through, matching the all-time record achieved by previous expansions and making it one of the fastest-selling PC games ever. In addition, World of Warcraft’s launch-week player concurrency climbed to its highest point since the 2010 launch of the Cataclysm ® expansion, as champions from around the world united to strike a mighty first blow against the fel invaders. But the battle has only just begun.

“It’s been a thrill to see players hunting demons, powering up Artifacts, and freely exploring all the new zones in Legion,” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. “We worked hard to make this the best World of Warcraft expansion yet, and we look forward to providing players with even more content as Legion’s epic story unfolds in the months ahead.”

While players are currently entrenched against the first wave of demonic invaders, Legion’s next exciting chapter is already in the works. Last weekend at PAX West, Blizzard unveiled new details on the expansion’s upcoming first major content update, Patch 7.1: Return to Karazhan, featuring a reimagined version of one of World of Warcraft’s most popular raids. Players will explore a sprawling five-player Mythic dungeon, facing familiar foes from Karazhan’s past—and encountering plenty of surprises and twists along the way. The update also features a new set of quests unfolding over multiple weeks in the fallen night elf city of Suramar, as well as a brand-new raid: the Trial of Valor, which sends players deep into the vrykul underworld of Helheim.

The Battle Against the Legion™ Begins!

Find Hope In the Army of the Light

Your struggle against the fel horrors that surround you will lead you across the paths of both the paladin Turalyon and the elven ranger Alleria Windrunner. They lead the Army of the Light—a band of lost warriors dedicated to combating the Legion. United in arms with these veterans of Azeroth’s greatest battles, you’ll rally the forces of virtue to strike at the Legion.

Hailing from Quel’Thalas, the eldest of the Windrunner sisters joined the Alliance of Lordaeron during the Second War. After Draenor was sundered by the backlash of Ner’zhul’s magic, Alleria vanished. To this day, her name resounds in human and elven cities alike, even if her fate is long uncertain.

The onetime general of the Alliance preserved the unity of his people through the tumult of the Second War. During the conflict, he assaulted Hellfire Citadel and tore down the Dark Portal. Turalyon is remembered for his humility and courage under fire, and mourned with the dead of that historic expedition, though the whole of Lordaeron would hope otherwise.

A Thousand Years of War
