Feature: Best Nintendo Switch Games

Best Switch Games

In a little over two-and-a-half years Switch has amassed a huge amount of software. Of course, this abundance of riches leaves us in something of a pickle – too much software, not enough time to play it all. In fairness, it’s a very nice problem to have – Help! There are too many excellent games to choose from!

To help you sort through the pile of new games dumped on the eShop every week, we asked Nintendo Life readers to rate their favourite games and the list below is the result. As with our round-up of the 50 best 3DS games of all time, the order here is taken from the user ratings associated with Switch games on this site’s database AND the ranking is fluid – it changes over time reflecting new releases according to their rating.

If you’ve previously rated the games, just sit back and enjoy. If, however, you’ve yet to give your personal score, clicking on each game’s rating below will enable you to cast your vote and affect the list. Can’t see your favourite? Head to our library of Switch games (click the games tab at the top of the page) and input your own ratings. A game needs a minimum of fifty ratings to become eligible, so it’s entirely possible to influence the ranking and get your favourite games onto the list.

Without further ado, let’s dive into this selection of the best Switch games until now…

Mega Man Legacy Collection (Switch eShop)Mega Man Legacy Collection (Switch eShop)

Publisher: Capcom / Developer: Capcom

Release Date: 22nd May 2018 (USA) / 22nd May 2018 (UK/EU)

Digital Eclipse did a great job with all the details in Mega Man Legacy Collection, presenting the original games in their best possible light, while tossing in a handful of extra features and challenges on top to sweeten the deal. The rewind feature is a welcome inclusion that helps to mitigate the difficulty of some of the games, and the overall quality of the series difficult to dispute. We would highly recommend you pick this one up – all the included extra features coupled with the ability to play these games both at home and on the go make it a no-brainer.

GRID Autosport (Switch eShop)GRID Autosport (Switch eShop)

Publisher: Codemasters / Developer: Feral Interactive

Release Date: 19th Sep 2019 (USA) / 19th Sep 2019 (UK/EU)

With over 100 cars and more than 25 different racing venues set over five distinct disciplines (as well as bonus DLC ones like destruction derby and drag racing), GRID Autosport is that rarest of beasts: a jack of all trades that doesn’t sacrifice quality as a result. The addition of all previously released paid console DLC – right down to the cynical XP boost – is extremely welcome, but the complete removal of all local and online multiplayer features means this a strictly solo affair, and that might be a turn-off for many. Still, that doesn’t change the fact that this is one of the best racing games on Switch.

Bayonetta (Switch eShop)Bayonetta (Switch eShop)

Publisher: Nintendo / Developer: PlatinumGames

Release Date: 16th Feb 2018 (USA) / 16th Feb 2018 (UK/EU)

After almost a decade Bayonetta is starting to show her age, but that doesn’t stop this hyperactive melee/shooter action mashup from being one of the most rewarding and memorable cult hits of the previous generation. Retooled for Nintendo Switch, one of Platinum Games’ most accomplished titles feels revitalised in both handheld and tabletop modes, serving up a meaty first course in the full witchy buffet to come.

The Messenger (Switch eShop)The Messenger (Switch eShop)

Publisher: Devolver Digital / Developer: Sabotage

Release Date: 30th Aug 2018 (USA) / 30th Aug 2018 (UK/EU)

2D side-scrolling action games like The Messenger may be a dime a dozen these days, but you’d be missing out on something special by passing this one up. Featuring a surprisingly long campaign, an incredible soundtrack and tight, challenging level designs, The Messenger stands as a shining example of great game design. We’d highly recommend you pick this one up; it’s the very definition of a modern classic.

Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age (Switch)Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age (Switch)

Publisher: Square Enix / Developer: Square Enix

Release Date: 30th Apr 2019 (USA) / 30th Apr 2019 (UK/EU)

Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age is a great example of what developers should aspire to do with remastering old games; this is the best-designed and most enjoyable version of this RPG classic currently on the market, and it can all be played on the go, too. Though the story comes off as being rather disappointing and the visuals are a little dated, the Gambit-focused combat system still proves to be one of the best we’ve seen in an RPG to date, making it dangerously easy for hours to slip by as you work on min-maxing characters to the best of their abilities. Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age may not prove to be the best Final Fantasy ever made, but it’s still a pretty darned great game in its own right and certainly worth your time.

Shantae and the Pirate's Curse (Switch eShop)Shantae and the Pirate's Curse (Switch eShop)

Publisher: WayForward / Developer: WayForward

Release Date: 20th Mar 2018 (USA) / 20th Mar 2018 (UK/EU)
Divinity: Original Sin 2 - Definitive Edition (Switch eShop)Divinity: Original Sin 2 - Definitive Edition (Switch eShop)

Publisher: Larian Studios / Developer: Larian Studios

Release Date: 4th Sep 2019 (USA) / 4th Sep 2019 (UK/EU)

From its opening moments upon a prison ship bound for Fort Joy to non-stop adventures that take you across the high seas to the Reaper’s Coast, Nameless Isle and beyond, Divinity: Original Sin 2 simply dazzles. In its seemingly endless parade of well-written characters, hilarious narration, deep and rewarding physics-based combat and the myriad ways in which it allows to you to engage and toy and with its systems, this is a truly epic RPG that revels in choice more than any other that’s come before it. It takes the old-school isometric style of Baldur’s Gate, layers it with an unparalleled level of attention to detail and fuses it with a thoroughly modern take on meaningful player decisions, resulting in one of the greatest role-playing games available on any platform; and it’s all here, present and correct on a portable console.

Diablo III: Eternal Collection (Switch)Diablo III: Eternal Collection (Switch)

Publisher: Blizzard Entertainment / Developer: Blizzard Entertainment

Release Date: 2nd Nov 2018 (USA) / 2nd Nov 2018 (UK/EU)

Diablo III: Eternal Collection is a lovely port of a classic RPG loot-a-thon that keeps its feet firmly in the past. The execution is wonderful, but its gameplay is not something that will appeal to everyone due to the high level of repetition. Its visuals are clear and functional if not especially interesting, but performance is top notch to make up for it. It’s one of those games which is best played with friends, too, and while you can play online, couch co-op offers a rich experience as you battle demons and collect loot together – three local players can drop-in and join you on your quest. If you’re looking for a loot-driven grind-a-thon with more explosions of viscera than you can comfortably discuss with your mother, this is the game for you.

Valkyria Chronicles 4 (Switch)Valkyria Chronicles 4 (Switch)

Publisher: SEGA / Developer: SEGA

Release Date: 25th Sep 2018 (USA) / 25th Sep 2018 (UK/EU)

Valkyria Chronicles 4 is a sublime strategy experience that fans of the genre won’t want to miss out on. The engaging, character-driven plot, third-person action, deep customization options, and high replayability make this one an easy recommendation, although pacing issues and cumbersome menu management may make it a little more intimidating for newcomers to the genre. We’re also undecided about where it fits in the franchise hall of fame; the original game perhaps just shades it. All the same, we’d recommend you give Valkyria Chronicles 4 a go; this is a strong return to form for the series, and it’s a great entry point for Nintendo fans.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy (Switch eShop)Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy (Switch eShop)

Publisher: Capcom / Developer: Capcom

Release Date: 9th Apr 2019 (USA) / 9th Apr 2019 (UK/EU)

The original Ace Attorney is – dare we say it – almost 20 years old, which is remarkable when you consider just how well it holds up 2019. Sure, it’s been ported plenty of times and the jump to Nintendo DS certainly helped shake off the retro cobwebs, but as a piece of interactive history, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy is as utterly addictive and truly rewarding as it was back at the turn of the millennium. Whether you’re brand new to the world of virtual defence law or a veteran attorney, Phoenix Wright’s first adventures are still a fine set of cases to undertake.
