Trials Rising On Switch Doesn’t Rise Up To The Challenge Of Its Rivals
Anybody who’s been playing video games for a few decades will probably recall draw distance ‘fog’ with a little nostalgia nowadays. The trick of disguising just how close to the player the game was drawing in objects by dousing the level in a thick mist was prevalent in the Nintendo 64 era, with a classic like Turok: Dinosaur Hunter being a typical example. Only this morning we were talking about the ‘mist’ used in Final Fantasy IX for the same reason.
With the power of modern consoles we thought these practices were in the past, but it seems the ‘fog’ has returned in a shocking fashion in the Switch version of Trials Rising. Below is a video by Chris Becker on Twitter from the beta version currently available to download for free. First the Switch version, followed by the same level in the Xbox One version:
Obviously, there’s a framerate difference there, with the Xbox version running at what appears to be a silky 60fps, but it seems like a sandstorm has been employed to hide the removal of most of the background elements in the 30fps Switch version. Let’s take a look at the still images side-by-side:
Is this a big problem that will affect the enjoyment of Switch owners who’ll play Trials without having the Xbox version for direct comparison? Possibly not, although reports on Twitter aren’t good on Day One, mentioning control delays and sub-30fps gameplay:
We’re diving into our review code at this very moment, so keep an eye out for our verdict in the near future. Ubisoft have outlined a long post-release support plan for the game, including expansions and download packs galore – let’s just hope they keep plugging away at the core game, too. It’d be nice to actually see what we’re doing on Switch.

Red Dead Online Beta Update Adds New Modes; Coming Next Week
Rockstar has announced an update to Red Dead Online, the online multiplayer mode in Red Dead Redemption 2. The update is scheduled for next week on February 26, with some of the content--such as clothing and a new melee weapon--exclusive via PS4 early access. This content will come to Xbox One in time, though. For now, Red Dead Online still remains in beta.
The update introduces a new in-game event called Fool's Gold in Free Roam. The event spawns a suit of golden armor, which can be worn. Doing so and killing players nets you points towards winning Fool's Gold. If you're not wearing the armor, you must track down and kill the person who is in order to claim it for yourself.
New competitive fishing challenges will be added in the new update as well, as will three new Showdown modes: Up in Smoke, Spoils of War, and Plunder. A new race variation, called Target Races, is also included. In terms of weapons, the update adds the Evans Repeater rifle and the Rare Shotgun, both of which will be available via the Wheeler & Rawson Catalogue and local Gunsmiths. A variety of new clothes and emotes are also being added, allowing you customize your Red Dead Online character in new ways.
In our Red Dead Redemption 2 review, Kallie Plagge gave the game a 9/10, writing, "While Red Dead Redemption was mostly focused on John Marston's story, Red Dead 2 is about the entire Van der Linde gang--as a community, as an idea, and as the death rattle of the Wild West. It is about Arthur, too, but as the lens through which you view the gang, his very personal, very messy story supports a larger tale. Some frustrating systems and a predictable mission structure end up serving that story well, though it does take patience to get through them and understand why. Red Dead Redemption 2 is an excellent prequel, but it's also an emotional, thought-provoking story in its own right, and it's a world that is hard to leave when it's done." Her impressions of the Red Dead Online beta, however, were not as positive.

Quartz: A complete guide to Microsoft’s comeback
In 1993, Satya Nadella—then a technical marketing manager—sat in front of a camera for a broadcast about how developers could use Microsoft server products.
The broadcast itself is a relic of its time: developers could call into a live hotline to inquire about Microsoft products (this was before customer support chatbots), Nadella chunked out code on a mechanical keyboard in front of an old CRT screen, and what we call servers today were still lovingly referred to as mainframes. The topic Nadella was talking about, wedged in the middle of the three-hour-long affair, was seemingly mundane: How to make custom inventory software using Excel and a local server.
Missing from the broadcast was any sign that Nadella would, 21 years later, become Microsoft’s CEO, or that the objective of this decades-old video—making it easy for companies to embed Microsoft into their most crucial processes—would become the bedrock of Microsoft’s success today.
Guilty Gear 20th Anniversary Edition Punches Its Way Onto Switch In May
Switch fighting fans will no doubt be delighted to hear that Arc System Works and PQube are pulling out all the stops with the release of Guilty Gear 20th Anniversary Edition, which lands on the Switch on 17th May.
The Anniversary Edition bundles up the original Guilty Gear and GUILTY GEAR XX ΛCORE PLUS R in one lovely package. The pack will be sold as a special Day One edition, which includes a personal letter from Guilty Gear creator Daisuke Ishiwatari and an artbook with unreleased works.
Both games included in the pack will also be available as separate digital versions for the Switch.
If all that wasn’t enough, a limited edition of only 500 pieces in Europe will be made available with a rather snazzy Nintendo Switch pouch as shown below. More details on this pre-order will be revealed soon.

Face Personal Demons In YUMENIKKI -DREAM DIARY- Today On Switch
Launching today on Switch, YUMENIKKI -DREAM DIARY- puts you in the shoes – and the dreams – of a young girl forced to deal with the monsters she encounters in the world of her own subconscious. It’s a surrealistic adventure from Playism Games with plenty of puzzle-solving to get stuck into as you explore the mysterious dream worlds and discover what’s behind the seven doors within.
The game is described as an ‘homage’ or ‘reboot’ of Yume Nikki, a similarly unusual adventure game made in RPG Maker and released on PC back in 2004. It became something of a cult favourite, with fans including indie game designer Derek Yu. The original creator, Kikiyama, is said to have provided ‘permission, cooperation, and supervision’ for this new version which retains ‘the feel of the original world and characters’ while updating the design with 3D graphics.
