You know something is ‘serious business’ when Activision wakes up and decides to get involved. With the release of games like Fortnite and ARK last year, console-like FPS experiences on mobile are getting more and more mainstream attention.
The fact that Activision announced Call of Duty: Mobile last night at Unity’s GDC Keynote speech is more proof that this is an up-and-coming genre, at least amongst the Free-to-Play crowd. As far as we’re concerned here at Pocket Tactics, I’ve long held the belief that these kinds of games offer way forward in trying to escape the more cynical free-to-play trappings, but so far the results have been mixed.
Of course, it also depends if you like Shooters in general. Before now it’s not been a ‘big’ genre and in many ways it still isn’t, what with Fortnite pretty much dominating the show at the moment. I used to play Call of Duty when I was younger but I later switched to Battlefield, and more recently, Rainbow Six: Siege. Still, one can see the appeal of a real attempt to bring this franchise to mobile devices in the same way Fortnite did.
The trailer doesn’t giveaway much – most of it is actually from the third-person perspective, which isn’t helpful, but it seems to be using in-engine footage (and you see some first-person stuff here and there). It looks pretty decent, all things considered. Activision have partnered with Tencent for the project, and the game is built in Unity, if that matters to you.
Looking at what’s been said, Call of Duty: Mobile is probably going to be a kind of ‘greatest hits’ amalgamation of maps, weapons, abilities etc… from all the COD games, and the free-to-play nature means that there’s probably going to be a longer progression path to unlocking a lot of these features (compared to the premium games, anyway). Real-world currency unlocks are likely, or at least, in-game currency will be available for purchase. Call of Duty has always been a robust franchise when it comes to the PvP experience so, provided they don’t get carried away perhaps it won’t fall down the ‘Pay-to-Win’ trap door that befalls others.
Sherman brings a wealth of experience to the table, having most recently served as the CEO of Victra, the largest exclusive authorized retailer for Verizon Wireless products and services. The incoming chief exec also held leadership positions at several other big-name retailers including Best Buy, Target, and Home Depot.
He joins Gamestop at an uncertain time, with the board of directors having halted plans to sell the company after months and months of discussion and buyer rumors.
The GameStop board, however, feel Sherman is the right person to turn the company’s fortunes around, and have backed their new CEO in the long-term.
“Having recently conducted a thorough review of strategic and financial alternatives, we are at a critical juncture in GameStop’s evolution and, with George’s hiring and his proven experience, we are ready to move forward,” said GameStop executive chairman, Dan DeMatteo.
“While the board recently announced the initial steps of our go-forward capital allocation and shareholder return program, we look forward to supporting George as we accelerate the next steps in that plan, which include several exciting initiatives that have been in development and have the potential to improve the financial performance and profitability of our company.”
Unlike Microsoft’s other video program, Inside Xbox, which is more news-orientated, [email protected] Game Pass will offer fans a glimpse at some of the “hottest” [email protected] coming to Game Pass, and will be packed with new reveals, gameplay highlights, and developer conversations.
As we mentioned in our State of Play write-up, the emergence of digital showcases like Nintendo Direct, State of Play, and [email protected] Game Pass marks a change in tack for the console industry’s ‘big three,’ with Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft all seeking to keep consumers engaged throughout the year by continuously drip-feeding news and announcements.

Game Pass Mobile App
Issue/Impact – After pushing a remote installation of a game from the Game Pass mobile app, customers will not see progress of the installation on in the mobile app and may not receive install notifications. The game will still successfully install if there is sufficient available space on the console.
Affected audience – must be in 1904 preview, must be a GP subscriber, must be using the GP mobile app, must be pushing game installations from the app.
Workarounds – None. A fix is coming in the next version of the mobile app in March. Customers interested in getting early access to the fix can download the Game Pass Beta app.

Like most Apple events, the show will be carried live through the Apple's website. It will be broadcast from the Steve Jobs Theater at the Apple campus. It will all go down on Monday, March 25, and you can watch it live:

What We Expect
For the time being, Apple has only referred to this as a "Special Event" and the tagline for the invitations was "It's show time." All indications are that this will be the reveal of Apple's long-rumored streaming service.
CNET reports that the company is poised to launch its own streaming service. The company is coming on strong, with a $1 billion investment and the involvement of celebrities like Oprah Winfrey, J.J. Abrams, Stephen Spielberg. The company is also reportedly in talks with other content producers like HBO and Showtime to join Apple's streaming service. Netflix has publicly stated that it will not be involved with Apple, setting the two companies up for a rivalry in an increasingly competitive market.
The payment model is still under wraps, but one analyst suggested that Apple's original shows could be made free for iOS users.
Other possibilities for the event include Apple's news service extending to magazine subscriptions, and an Apple credit card through a partnership with Goldman Sachs. We'll know for certain once we see the event, so be sure to tune in.
