WayForward And Arc System Works Announce River City Girls

Arc Way

Earlier this month, a game rating was spotted for a new title called River City Girls. It has now been officially confirmed the independent game development studio WayForward (responsible for Shantae) and Arc System Works (known for game series like BlazBlue and Guilty Gear) will be collaborating on this brand new River City / Kunio-kun project.

Here’s what both parties had to say about the announcement, direct from the PR:

“This is a really wonderful opportunity. Arc System Works is an extremely talented gaming company that we’ve admired for many years, and we are incredibly happy to be working with them. This new take on the River City universe is going to be a lot of fun.” – WayForward Tyrannical Overlord Voldi Way.

“Everyone here is pleasantly surprised by the way the River City series is turning out. I think the River City series has a reputation as a 2D fighting-action game with a lot of male fans, but then River City Girls appears! WayForward’s enthusiasm for a female protagonist won me over.”” – Arc System Works Producer Takomi Kaneko.

The River City / Kunio-kun side-scrolling beat ’em up series originally started out on the Famicom and NES. The first entry, River City Ransom, is currently available on the Nintendo Switch Online NES service.

More information about River City Girls – including platforms – is expected to be revealed later on in 2019.

4 cool new projects to try in COPR for April 2019

COPR is a collection of personal repositories for software that isn’t carried in Fedora. Some software doesn’t conform to standards that allow easy packaging. Or it may not meet other Fedora standards, despite being free and open source. COPR can offer these projects outside the Fedora set of packages. Software in COPR isn’t supported by Fedora infrastructure or signed by the project. However, it can be a neat way to try new or experimental software.

Here’s a set of new and interesting projects in COPR.

Joplin

Joplin is a note-taking and to-do app. Notes are written in the Markdown format, and organized by sorting them into various notebooks and using tags.
Joplin can import notes from any Markdown source or exported from Evernote. In addition to the desktop app, there’s an Android version with the ability to synchronize notes between them — using Nextcloud, Dropbox or other cloud services. Finally, there’s a browser extension for Chrome and Firefox to save web pages and screenshots.

Installation instructions

The repo currently provides Joplin for Fedora 29 and 30, and for EPEL 7. To install Joplin, use these commands with sudo:

sudo dnf copr enable taw/joplin
sudo dnf install joplin

Fzy

Fzy is a command-line utility for fuzzy string searching. It reads from a standard input and sorts the lines based on what is most likely the sought after text, and then prints the selected line. In addition to command-line, fzy can be also used within vim. You can try fzy in this online demo.

Installation instructions

The repo currently provides fzy for Fedora 29, 30, and Rawhide, and other distributions. To install fzy, use these commands:

sudo dnf copr enable lehrenfried/fzy
sudo dnf install fzy

Fondo

Fondo is a program for browsing many photographs from the unsplash.com website. It has a simple interface that allows you to look for pictures of one of several themes, or all of them at once. You can then set a found picture as a wallpaper with a single click, or share it.

Installation instructions

The repo currently provides Fondo for Fedora 29, 30, and Rawhide. To install Fondo, use these commands:

sudo dnf copr enable atim/fondo
sudo dnf install fondo

YACReader

YACReader is a digital comic book reader that supports many comics and image formats, such as cbz, cbr, pdf and others. YACReader keeps track of reading progress, and can download comics’ information from Comic Vine. It also comes with a YACReader Library for organizing and browsing your comic book collection.

Installation instructions

The repo currently provides YACReader for Fedora 29, 30, and Rawhide. To install YACReader, use these commands:

sudo dnf copr enable atim/yacreader
sudo dnf install yacreader

AppleInsider - How to make the Apple Watch Raise to Speak feature work every time

How to make the Apple Watch Raise to Speak feature work every time

The ability to just raise your wrist and speak to your Apple Watch without the words “Hey, Siri,” is brilliant. What was initially a convenience is now increasingly useful, too, and yet it’s extraordinarily unreliable. Here’s how to make it better —and why you need it to.

We must call out the phrase “Hey, Siri,” twenty times a day and there is not a single thing we don’t like about it —except those words. The ability to have your iOS device send messages, tell you the news, answer calls, play music and countless more things, without even touching it is astounding. Having to prefix every single request with “Hey, Siri,” is not.

If you’re a heavy user of Siri, those words become a chore and you end up saying them so often that they turn to meaningless syllables that you rush through. Don’t get us wrong, the idea of going back to pressing the Home button before you speak would be like returning to the Bronze Age.

Yet when Apple introduced Raise to Speak with watchOS 5, it was clearly the next step. Just raise your wrist, speak to your Watch and Siri would go do what you ask without you ever needing to say, “Hey, Siri.” Okay, Siri might misunderstand you, but that’s Siri, it’s nothing to do with how you invoke it.

When it works

If there’s anything more exasperating than Siri offering to send a text to your ex instead of playing the “Texas Essentials” playlist on Apple Music, it’s Raise to Speak doing nothing at all.

Before we were driven to figure this problem out, we were getting Raise to Speak reacting perhaps one out of twenty times. In regular use, we quickly got to the stage where we didn’t bother and instead just always said, “Hey, Siri,” regardless.

Now after practicing an awful lot, we’re getting it working about nineteen out of twenty times.

How to do it

You do have to have this feature switched on or you’ll be fruitlessly shouting into your Watch forever. On the Watch, go to Settings, scroll to General and tap on Siri. If your Watch can do this, so if it’s a Series 4 or later one, then you’ll have a Raise to Speak option.

You have to set up Raise to Speak before you can use it. Only Series 4 or later have this setting, though.

You have to set up Raise to Speak before you can use it. Only Series 4 or later have this setting, though.

Switch that on and many happy hours of trying to get it work lie ahead of you.

The trick is to remember that the Watch is not listening out all the time. It will listen for “Hey, Siri,” as soon as you turn your wrist, but that’s not Raise to Speak.

Clearly, given the name, it’s no surprise that you have to raise your arm in order to make this work. It’s the specific motion and perhaps also positioning that makes the Watch start listening to what you’re saying.

However, what is surprising is just how much you have to raise your arm. We find that it works most consistently when you raise it so high that the Watch is in front of your face.

It seems to help most if the Watch face is close to perpendicular to the ground. Raise it and tilt the Watch so that it is directly face-on to you, and then it works.

You have to raise it and start speaking pretty much immediately, but as you do so, you will get the screen changing to show the words “What can I help you with?” and the Siri symbol reacting to your voice.

Basically, act like you’re about to start dancing an Argentine Tango and you’re sorted.

Your first clue that Raise to speak is working is when the Watch changes from your regular face (left) to listening to what you're saying (right).

Your first clue that Raise to speak is working is when the Watch changes from your regular face (left) to listening to what you’re saying (right).

Practicality

Compare that to how you can just turn your wrist enough to light the screen and then say “Hey, Siri.” That always works and it always works quickly and you can do it without even raising your arm an inch.

As much as we like the idea of never saying that trigger phrase again, and as much as we will never change our mind about wanting that some day, we haven’t got it now. Not effectively, not practically.

Which is more than a pity, it’s increasingly a hindrance. Even when watchOS 5 was officially released to the public in September 2018, it was highly likely that you had many devices that could react to “Hey, Siri.”

It was remarkably easy to have a situation where you’re in a place with an iPhone, an iPad and even a Mac that are all listening out for the words. Then, of course, you could also have a HomePod or do, and the only difference with those is that they have better microphones. We have been two rooms away, talking to our Apple Watches, and the HomePod has reacted instead.

Consequently, we might, for instance, successfully set an alarm on our Apple Watch but the HomePod in our office is set too.

Left: using Hey, Siri. Right: using Raise to Speak. It doesn't look like much of a difference, but when you use Siri a lot, it really is.

Left: using Hey, Siri. Right: using Raise to Speak. It doesn’t look like much of a difference, but when you use Siri a lot, it really is.

Then we got AirPods 2 and now the very devices in our ears are listening out for the trigger phrase.

As good as these devices are at checking with each other and trying to reason which one you meant to call out to, they get it wrong. If you’re wearing AirPods 2 and for some reason decide to say “Hey, Siri,” into your Apple Watch, then the Watch, the AirPods and those nosy, eavesdropping HomePods are likely to respond.

All of that goes away when Raise to Speak works reliably. Use that to ask Siri something on your Apple Watch and no other device you’ve got will ever wrongly respond —because none of them will even hear you.

The future

Apple is reportedly working on extending Raise to Speak and finding more ways for us to interact with our Watches by voice without the trigger phrase.

Ultimately, it would be great if you could cease ever having to say “Hey, Siri” again. To anything. It won’t happen, and Raise to Speak won’t get better enough to be useable, unless the devices always listen to everything we ever say.

Apple’s not going to do that, not when there are such security issues around it.

Only, as good as Siri is and can be, there aren’t that many things you can ask it or that many different ways you can put the same question. Perhaps Apple could have it listen for a number of specific phrases, not just this one.

Perhaps Apple could let us choose our own phrase to invoke Siri. It’s already taken a step toward that with the way that you can record any phrase you like to trigger a Siri Shortcut.

True, we’re an ungrateful bunch. The ability to talk to any device and have it ever understand you in any way is less computer science and more alchemy. It was the impossible dream for such a long time, and now it’s an everyday or even every hour occurrence.

We just want more, and we don’t want to have to strike a pose to make Raise to Speak work.

Mobile - The Weekender: Token Edition

The Weekender: Token Edition

It’s a Bank Holiday here In the UK, so for various reasons this is an incredibly token edition of The Weekender – apologies! Quite honestly though, I’ve not been taken by this week’s release slate so you’re not really missing out on much.

We’re coming up towards the end of the month now, but there’s still some goodies still left to drop – Richard is working on another game compilation, There’s a couple more reviews to drop, and Nick’s working on a Beginner’s Guide for Hades Star, mainly as a test to see how popular that game is at the moment.

Meanwhile, in mobile gaming…

New Release: Egypt: Old Kingdom (iOS & Android) – Full review Monday!

So you may remember from the March 29th update we talked about the release of Egypt: Old Kingdom, the follow up to Predynastic Egypt? Turns out that was a mistake and the developers accidentally launched it on iOS.

We had to delay our review since the game was due to go through a few more updates, but I can confirm that it’s officially slated to release today, if it’s not already out. Our review will drop Monday once Matt’s had a chance to check out the released version.

Update: Star Traders: Frontiers (iOS & Android) (Review)

Our favourite Sci-fi RPG has been awfully quiet this past month, but for good reason – the brothers Trese have been working on adding Carriers and small craft to the game. The update officially hit the Steam version earlier this week, with the Android and iOS version expected to drop soon – basically, the moment Apple/Google approve the updates. Just in time for Easter! (Hopefully – the update still hasn’t turned up yet.)

Sales

We let you know about one Easter Sale earlier in the week, but there are plenty more!

  • Acram Digital are discounting their modest catalogue of games on both iOS & Android, which includes the excellent Eight Minute Empire.
  • Ironhide are running discounts on their most recent TD game, Kingdom Rush: Vengeance, as well we Iron Marines on iOS & Android.
  • SteamWorld Heist is half price once again on iOS, and last but certainly not least, both Fighting Fantasy Legends games are also going cheap.

That’s all we’ve got time for this week – hope you enjoy your weekends and normal service will resume next week!

News - DC's Swamp Thing Revealed In Spooky Trailer For New Show
Posted by: xSicKxBot - 04-19-2019, 03:36 PM - Forum: Lounge - No Replies

DC's Swamp Thing Revealed In Spooky Trailer For New Show

Swamp Thing has been a favorite of DC fans for many years, but most viewers would probably agree that neither of his previous two on-screen adaptations captured the spooky, horror edge that made his comic books so popular in the '70s and early '80s. Hopefully that will all change next month when the new Swamp Thing show launches on DC Universe. The first teaser has now been released.

The video doesn't reveal much actual footage from the show, but it's still highly effective. The camera tracks slowly across the waters of a spooky swamp, before stopping to show us Swamp Thing emerging from its depths. The creature's make-up looks fantastic and the teaser certainly suggests that the show will be going in a horror-based direction. Check it out above.

Swamp Thing stars Andy Bean (Agents of SHIELD, the upcoming It: Chapter 2) as Dr Alec Holland, the biologist who transforms into the elemental monster after working in the Louisiana swamp. Derek Mears, who is best known for portraying the iconic killer Jason Vorhees in the 2009 reboot of Friday the 13th, plays the creature. The cast also includes Virginia Madsen (Candyman), Jennifer Beals (Flashdance), and WiIl Patton (Halloween). It hits DC Universe on May 31.

The first season of Swamp Thing was originally intended to be 13 episodes. However, it was reported this week that production was abruptly halted and the season will now run for 10 episodes. According to The Hollywood Reporter, "creative differences" have led to the shortened season, but DC and Warner have not commented on the issue.

Nevertheless, there are plenty of other shows in the works for DC Universe. The DC Universe panel at Wondercon last month gave fans a first look at Courtney Whitmore in Stargirl, which will premiere in early 2020. In addition, it was recently reported that Game of Thrones star Iain Glen has been cast as Bruce Wayne in the second season of Titans, which is scheduled for a Fall 2019 release.
