Random: Have Super Smash Bros. Boxes Been Teasing Future Games All Along?

Ever since Melee arrived in 2001, the Super Smash Bros. games have all been treated to a subtitle in their name, rather than following any sort of numerical sequel-style system. After the original Super Smash Bros. on N64, we had Melee on GameCube, Brawl on Wii, the less-imaginative for Wii U and for Nintendo 3DS on – well, you can probably guess which consoles those appeared on – and then Ultimate on Switch.

Now, then… What if we told you that, in some cases at least, previous instalments had predicted – or maybe teased – future game titles?

Take a look at the back of Super Smash Bros. Melee’s box. This is our old, beloved PAL copy of the GameCube title (so yours may look a little different depending on your region). Notice how it reads that the brawl is on? Which just so happens to be the name of the next game in the series?

OK, sure, one game in the series just so happens to feature the subtitle of its sequel on the box. So what, right? Except, it isn’t just one. This entire quirky situation was brought to our attention by the lovely Jon Cartwright of GameXplain fame, who also uploaded the following image of Smash Bros. for 3DS’ box on Twitter:

As you can see, this game also happens to feature the name of what would eventually be the next in the series – in particularly giant letters, no less.

So, should we expect something similar on the back of Smash Ultimate’s box? Here’s another one of our photos, this time of the latest game on Switch. We must admit, things don’t seem as exciting this time around – Super Smash Bros. Everyone? Super Smash Bros. History? Super Smash Bros. BIGGER!? Who knows?

<img class="lazy" src="https://static.nintendolife.com/blank.gif" data-original="https://images.nintendolife.com/869ff32b4b1e8/super-smash-bros-ultimate.original.jpg" alt="Super Smash Bros.
We’re joking, of course – we imagine these are simply coincidences – but it’s a neat little observation nonetheless. If you hadn’t noticed this before, feel free to go ahead and impress your friends with your newly discovered Smash conspiracy theories.
