Why we are updating the requirements

Our goal is simple: we want to make it clear for players what kind of computer can run Java Edition smoothly. While older devices may still launch the game, they will struggle to deliver a good experience. This can lead to low frame rates, visual issues, long loading times, or performance that doesn’t match what players expect.

Updating the requirements also helps us keep improving Minecraft. Supporting hardware that no longer runs the game well can limit what we’re able to modernize behind the scenes. By setting clearer recommendations, we can focus on making Java Edition better for our players.

Will this stop me from playing?

Some players using older hardware may notice that their device is now listed below the minimum spec. This may include older graphics cards, some older integrated graphics options, and older Intel-based Mac devices.

These updated recommended system requirements won’t stop you from playing Minecraft: Java Edition today. If your computer falls below the new minimum requirements, Java Edition should still launch. However, its performance and visual quality are no longer guaranteed on below-spec hardware, and it may struggle or fail to launch Java Edition in the future – especially as we transition away from OpenGL and towards Vulkan. We will keep players informed of these changes, especially changes that will sunset hardware that previously supported Minecraft: Java Edition.

What should I do?

From July 21, check the Java System Requirements page on Minecraft.net for the updated minimum and recommended specs. If you already play Java Edition without issues, you may not notice anything changing right away. If your game often struggles, the new requirements may help explain why and give you a clearer target for a smoother experience.

If you’re buying a new device or checking whether your current one is ready for Java Edition, use the new recommended specs as your best guide. They are designed around a stronger, steadier experience at 1080p and 60 FPS using the Fancy preset.
