[Dev News] Action Game Maker Massive 2.0 Beta
1
Launched in June 2025 Action Game Maker was an exciting new game engine in the Maker series built on top of the open source Godot game engine. Unfortunately at launch it really didn’t offer much over the vanilla Godot experience, making it hard to justify spending money on a commercial version of Godot. A little bit over a year later Action Game Maker 2.0 just reached beta and it’s a MASSIVE improvement over the 1.x release and finally offers a different and in many ways easier development experience than the engine it is based on.

Highlights of the 2.0 beta upgrade include:

Maker Mode UI: This update introduces a completely redesigned interface known as “Maker Mode”. Users who prefer the old layout can still access the original interface by switching to “Godot Mode”.

Integrated Tutorial: A new hands-on tutorial has been integrated directly into the editor to guide users through the updated screen layout. This tutorial can be easily launched directly from the launcher.

Dedicated Docks: Developers now have access to a specialized dock that automatically lists game scenes and relevant project files. This dock also allows you to organize your workspace by adding labels and marking files as favorites.

Environment Templates: You can easily establish a scene’s atmosphere using a single button to apply environments like snowy fields or mystical forests. This UI feature automatically adjusts the color tones and shaders of your placed objects and tiles to match.

Reference Search: A newly added search function in the Variable/Switch Settings window lets you easily locate where specific variables and switches are utilized. You can access this directly from the database and even rename elements based on your search results.

Collision Checker: A new visual collision compatibility checker allows you to easily verify how different objects interact when they come into contact. This visual tool makes it simple to confirm if attacks from Object A will successfully hit Object B.

Animation Tools: The interface adds dedicated “Sprite Anime” and “Hitbox Anime” features to streamline importing animations and setting up frame-specific hitboxes. It also includes a tool that automatically generates animation sets from standard sprite sheet templates.

Live Debugger: A brand new Action Game Maker debugger allows you to monitor and modify game values while actively test-playing. This on-the-fly rewriting feature makes testing and fine-tuning much more efficient.

Official Imports System: A dedicated system has been added to the UI to simplify importing official assets, official DLCs, and official systems. For example, you can now seamlessly import an official pre-built menu system for saving, pausing, and loading.

Enhanced Previews: The editor interface has been cleaned up and now includes visual previews for portals, effects, and particles. This general cleanup also extends to organizing the inspector, making the overall UI cleaner and more user-friendly.
