[Dev News] Stride 4.4 Released
1
Stride, the free and open source Unity-Like C# 3D game engine, just got a major update with the release of Stride 4.4. A lot of this update was behind the scenes such as the rewritten renderers with Direct3D 12 and Vulkan now being the primary options. A lot of focus was on improving cross platform support, with Linux and MacOS now building in an identical manner to Windows. Progress is also continuing on porting the Game Studio editor to run on Linux and Mac, with Linux now at least supporting the editor via Proton.

Highlights of the 4.4 release include:

Mac/Linux build support: Building projects on macOS and Linux now works identically to Windows due to updates in the asset compiler. Additionally, Linux developers can now run the Game Studio editor via the Proton compatibility layer.

Rendering overhauls: Vulkan and Direct3D 12 have been fully overhauled for better stability across all platforms, while legacy APIs like OpenGL have been removed. The new SDSL shader compiler also utilizes a modern SPIRV-centric pipeline for faster compilation and easier integration of future enhancements.

New CLI tool: A new command-line tool lets developers install Stride, manage versions, create new projects, and launch Game Studio directly from the terminal. This offers a streamlined, scriptable alternative to using the standard graphical launcher.

Improved asset workflow: A newly generated
Code:
Assets
class provides strongly typed URLs, allowing developers to catch missing assets at compile time rather than at runtime. The update also introduces replacement assets, which make it easy to override content from external packages or the engine itself.

Cross-platform editor rewrite: The team is actively porting Game Studio from WPF to Avalonia to eventually provide native editor support for macOS and Linux. As an initial milestone for this massive transition, the newly updated Stride launcher is already running on Avalonia.
