There are plenty of high-profile releases out this month, but if you're looking to do your part in the ongoing war with bugs, you can now grab Starship Troopers: Extermination on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. It's launching in a post-Helldivers 2 gaming landscape, but if there's one thing that makes a bug hunt stand out in this game, it's that it allows for larger 16-person squads of Mobile Infantry grunts to be deployed and it makes use of a base-building gameplay mechanic. "We're full 16-player, we have a different gameplay loop, we have building as a core component of our loop," game lead Peter Maurice said to GameSpot in an interview. When you dig deeper, you pull that one layer off, you can see that there's two really distinct games: They kill bugs. We are the bug game." Both games do feature some similarities--like an ongoing galactic war metagame, cosmetics, and cheeky satire--but Helldivers 2 was inspired by Starship Troopers whereas Extermination is a licensed adaptation based on the IP made popular by the 1997 Paul Verhoeven-directed film. News - Xbox Games Will Soon Be Sold In A New Place
In response to a recent court ruling, Microsoft has announced that Xbox fans will soon be able to purchase and play Xbox games directly from the Xbox app on Android. A judge ruled in the Epic v. Google case this week that Google will be forced to allow rival third-party app stores to exist within Google Play. This effort, spearheaded by Epic's Tim Sweeney, means Microsoft will sell Xbox games directly to consumers beginning November 1. The Fortnite studio convinced the court that Google made it very difficult for any rival store within Google Play to successfully compete in the market, and that's led to this decision being handed down. As The Verge points out, it's unclear as to why Microsoft wasn't already selling Xbox games within its existing Android app. In any event, now that Microsoft can sell directly to consumers via its own store inside the Xbox app, it likely won't have to pay a fee to Google that it might have needed to otherwise. News - Disco Elysium Devs Form New Studio, Currently Working On A "Spiritual Success
A group of developers who were initially tapped to work on the canceled sequel to Disco Elysium have announced the formation of a new development studio--Longdue Games--and a new game, which the studio describes as being "set in a game world conceived by the leads of the now-canceled Disco Elysium sequel." Longdue Games consists of about a dozen developers, many of whom either worked on Disco Elysium or were previously slated to work on its sequel before it was canceled. A number of legal disagreements between the game's development studio/publisher ZA/UM and Disco Elysium game director Robert Kurvitz and art director Aleksander Rostov ultimately led to the sequel's cancellation, and although Longdue Games does describe its upcoming title as a "spiritual successor" to the original game, Kurvitz, Rostov, and ZA/UM have nothing to do with the project. "Longdue’s debut project is developed with key creatives from the original Disco Elysium team and contributors to the unreleased sequel, carrying forward the thoughtful, narrative-first approach that defined its predecessor," Longdue said in a press release announcing both the studio's formation and the game itself. "The game explores the intricate relationship between mind and environment, offering players a story-driven experience where their choices shape both the world and its characters."
