I Thought Block Blast Was Easy—Then the Board Started Tricking Me

I started playing Block Blast on a random afternoon thinking I’d just do a couple of quick little puzzles. Drag a block onto a grid, clear some lines, done. Simple. The kind of browser game you can half-pay attention to while doing something else.

Yeah… that lasted about as long as my first obvious “easy move.”

At first, it really does feel light. You get a set of block shapes, you drag them onto the board, and when you complete a full horizontal row or vertical column, those cells disappear. And because it doesn’t use falling pieces, there’s no frantic “stack before it lands” feeling. It’s more like you’re placing decisions on the board one by one—except the decisions keep echoing forward like they’re waiting to get payback.

The puzzle is easy to start, harder once the board fills up
The first thing I noticed about Block Blast is that the controls are straightforward. Pick a piece, place it on the 9x9 grid, clear lines when you complete them. The part that surprised me is how quickly the game stops feeling like a casual clear-anything puzzle.

Pieces don’t rotate. So even when something looks like it should fit, your brain has to accept the shape you’re given and make it work in the orientation it comes in. That sounds small, but it changes everything. I caught myself doing that “this will be fine” thinking—then realizing I’d accidentally painted myself into a corner.

Also, the game makes it clear that the available pieces should be considered as a group. In the beginning, I’d place my next block like it was independent from everything else. After a couple of rounds, I started pausing more, looking at what I had left, and thinking, “Okay, what am I saving space for?”

Keeping open areas matters more than quick clears
I used to chase clears. If I saw a row almost full, I’d grab the piece that felt like it would finish it. Sometimes it worked and it felt great—especially when one placement cleared multiple rows or columns at once. Those moments are oddly satisfying, like the board is rewarding you for being patient.

But more often than not, I made a bad decision by thinking too narrowly. I’d clear something… and then suddenly there’d be this awkward little gap left behind. Not a big disaster gap, just a weird isolated space that becomes impossible once the next few pieces come in.

That’s when I realized what I should’ve been doing from the start: keep large open areas. Small gaps might look harmless, but in a block placement puzzle, they’re basically invitations for future regret. If you don’t keep breathing room, you start running out of places where a piece can actually sit without forcing another awkward placement.

No timer = I actually plan (and still mess up)
One thing I really like is there’s no countdown timer. I can take a breath before each move, stare at the board a little longer than I normally would in puzzle games, and try to think a few steps ahead.

And that’s probably why I got hooked in the first place: the planning feels natural. Not “speedrun planning,” more like “slow down, think, place carefully.” I found myself mentally mapping how a placement today might constrain you later.

Of course, I still mess up. I’ve definitely placed a piece too quickly because the move looked obvious, only to regret it when the next piece arrived and suddenly my earlier “good spot” didn’t look so good anymore. There was one run where I thought I was doing fine, got a couple clears, and then—after an awkward gap appeared—I kept trying to force it to work instead of stepping back. By the end, it felt like the board had turned into one of those jigsaw puzzles where you realize the picture doesn’t match the pieces you chose.

The game ends when none of the currently available pieces can fit on the remaining board, and I love how that makes every placement matter. It’s not just “lose because you’re slow.” It’s “lose because of a choice you made earlier.”

Mistakes I made (and what I learned)
My biggest lesson: don’t treat each placement like a standalone moment. A move can be correct right now and still be wrong because it creates a layout that future pieces can’t handle. I also learned to stop obsessing over one big line clear if it costs me the shape of the board overall.

Most importantly, I learned to pay attention to spaces I’d normally ignore. Those little “surely that’ll be fillable” spots? They’re usually the traps.

A few casual tips that helped me
I started improving once I began doing small checks instead of rushing: keep bigger open regions when possible, avoid isolating awkward gaps, and think about where each piece could realistically go in combination with the others you’ve got coming up.

And when I see an opportunity to clear multiple rows or columns with one placement? I try to take it—but only if it doesn’t sacrifice the overall board space. That balance is where the game gets fun.

After a few runs, I kept saying “one more game,” and then actually starting one more game. Block Blast is the kind of online puzzle game where you think you’re just placing blocks… until you realize you’re managing space, planning ahead, and trying to outsmart your own decisions.

GTA 6 is one of the most-anticipated games ever, and it arrives on November 19. People naturally want to know when exactly that day it will be available to play, and now it looks the like first indication of that has come to light.

GTA Vice scoured PlayStation Store listings for the game across 63 countries and regions, and discovered that the game will not have a global simultaneous release. It looks like the US will be among the last major markets to get it.

Again, this is all based on PlayStation Store listings and is not confirmed by Rockstar. GameSpot has followed up with the developer seeking comment.

According to GTA Vice, GTA 6 will unlock--on the PlayStation Store, at least--at midnight local time. That means people in New Zealand and Australia will get in first and the US will be among the final major regions to get started.

In short, GTA 6 will become available to play in New Zealand at midnight in the country, which works out to 5 AM PT / 8 AM ET on November 18. People in the US will then have to wait 16 hours to play GTA 6 where they live.

If this is accurate, then people in the US will be in for a tough day as they see the game go live for other people and have to wait. If you're concerned about spoilers, that's another reason to be on guard that day.

It is also worth mentioning again that this information may not be accurate, or that details could change, so people should wait to hear directly from Rockstar about launch times.

While GTA 6 unlocks on November 19, preloading for what we're expecting to be a very big game begins on November 12. That is also when the game's physical edition--which includes a code in a box--will be able to buy in stores, though it does not unlock until November 19.

According to SensorTower, GTA 6 has already sold more than 5 million copies via preorders, and that number could climb to 25 million by launch. That would work out to more than $2 billion in revenue, which is reportedly enough to pay for the game's development budget.

News - Star Wars Zero Company Is Missing The Only Achievement I Wanted

Star Wars Zero Company released late last month, and it became one of my favorite games of the year almost instantly. I recently finished it, and while I was very satisfied with how it all wrapped up, there was one thing--a certain achievement--that was missing, and it filled me with a rage I can only satiate by complaining about it online.

You see, like the XCOM series it took so much inspiration from, Star Wars Zero Company features a permadeath mechanic. With the exception of main protagonist Hawks, any of the allies you take into battle will permanently disappear if they're killed in battle.

Aside from accidentally knocking someone off the side of the map because I was still going through the tutorial segments in the first hour or so (I restarted the mission in this case), I managed to get through the entire game without losing anyone. Well, except for the poor fellow who automatically dies in the opening segment. The credits rolled and I waited for the achievement to pop up on my Xbox.

Indeed. There are achievements for everyone from making an almost-impossible shot to changing some cosmetic items, but there is no achievement for making it through the game without losing a squad member. There is, however, an achievement for having a squad member die on your watch. If you're on PlayStation, it's a literal participation trophy.

I'm not actually a big achievement guy, and this isn't that big of a deal--I'm much more interested in making sure the team at Bit Reactor gets paid so it can continue making amazing turn-based tactics games like Zero Company. But if you make a sequel, please give me my reward.

When Rockstar released GTA 6's first trailer in December 2023, the game looked like it was coming along well, but it wasn't "fully formed" back then. That's according to Rockstar North boss Rob Nelson, who said in an interview that the trailer's song, Tom Petty's "Love is a Long Road" was a "mission statement" for the developers to rally around to get the game finished.

"With the first trailer for this game, the Tom Petty song was a real sort of mission statement. You don’t have the game fully formed, you have an idea of what it’s going to be, but you really have to push hard to pull that together and so when this team is able to do that--and it’s definitely made with everything that you’ve got, but it’s the best of everything you’ve got at that point--it’s put together in such a way that it helps be a bit of a guiding light of what it needs to feel like," he told Trois Couleurs.

Also in the interview, Nelson spoke about how one of the first things the developers did after deciding that GTA 6 would be set in Vice City AKA Miami was to travel there.

"We'll go there. And just feel it, and go out and just drive around. Almost always on our own at very first, just a handful of people, and we’ll take a ton of pictures, and soak as much of it up as we can and see what speaks to us and start to talk about it and share ideas about what we want to incorporate," he said.

GTA 6 is set for release on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. According to SensorTower's data, the game has already sold 5 million copies via preorders, generating more than $500 million in revenue.

Rockstar is partnered with Sony for GTA 6, and part of that deal includes a GTA 6-themed DualSense controller. It goes on sale September 10 at 7 AM PT / 10 AM ET for $85.

He told IGN that, in retrospect, he feels it was "naive" to think that fans of the games would immediately embrace his pitch for his Resident Evil movie.

"I thought fans of these games, like me, would be thrilled that somebody was coming along and turning Resident Evil into a survival horror movie. I was like, ‘That’s great.’ I did not really appreciate the sentiment that, ‘We’ve been waiting forever for Leon’s story.’ And I appreciate that, and I’m sorry that’s not the story I’m bringing. I get it, I understand the frustration," he said. "I understand it so well because I haven’t seen the earlier [Resident Evil] movies, because they don't look like the Resident Evil that I love, so how could I be frustrated with fans who have that same attitude?"

Cregger went on to say he hopes fans of the game see his movie "regardless of their skepticism or their disappointment" that he's not re-telling a story from the games. He said he hopes fans of the games "feel seen" when they watch the movie and see "all of the love for the games that are in this movie."

"This is not me just telling a story and slapping Resident Evil on it so I can get a budget. This is me telling a Resident Evil story. I understand the resistance, I do, because I have it myself. It is coming from a true place of love," he said.

In a separate interview with The Playlist, Cregger said the press tour he's doing to promote Resident Evil feels more like an "apology tour" given all the negative sentiment from fans. "I feel like I’m running for office, trying to get these people not to call me a LARPer," he said.

"Now, I’m just like, 'You know what? See the movie.' If you still feel the same way after you’ve seen it, then whatever you think is fair. You’re going to decide if I’m an actual Resident Evil fan or a fake. What can I say? I think the movie is going to speak for itself," he added.

Also in the interview, Cregger addressed the possibility of working on another Resident Evil movie project in the future. He said he "can't help" to think about "other places this story could go," adding that he has "ideas." At the same time, Cregger pointed out that his movie isn't even out yet. "Let's see what happens," he said.

In a different interview, Cregger said he's done with franchise movies and will only make original projects going forward. His next movie is The Flood, a sci-fi film set in space. Cregger previously directed Barbarian and Weapons.

After months of rumors, Nintendo finally revealed that The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake was real back in June. While that reveal was purely cinematic, today's Nintendo Direct for The Legend of Zelda showed off gameplay for the remake and offered a closer look at its updated art direction.

The Switch 2 exclusive stays true to the 1998 original's aesthetics, while showcasing a huge upgrade visually. Link's hat and tunic, for example, showcase detailed threading and embroidering, along with berries on his cap. The lighting system looks fantastic, too, as sunlight pokes through the forest as Link heads to the Great Deku Tree.

As for gameplay, players will have a button for Link to jump and dash. That may sound silly to younger people who grew up on The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, but it's a huge change from the Nintendo 64 title. How the jump button could possibly impact dungeon design wasn't addressed but should prove interesting later this year.

Overall, the first gameplay revealed for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake seemed to address a lot of my concerns of a simple remaster for the game. The Switch 2 title seems faithful while still altering enough for modern audiences--and those of us who played the original (or 3DS remaster) plenty of times already.

Long considered to be the greatest Legend of Zelda game--until the Switch era at least, thanks to Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom--Ocarina of Time was originally released for the Nintendo 64 console. The first 3D Zelda game, Ocarina of Time, was a trailblazer and laid the foundation that future entries in the franchise would emulate.

The game has received multiple ports and remasters over the years, and out of all of them, the 3DS version is considered the best of the best thanks to the various quality-of-life changes added to the game--including some welcome revisions to the Water Dungeon.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake will launch November 5 on Switch 2.

As the platform that gets the lion's share of PC game sales, Steam naturally makes a lot of money every year from commissions, publishing fees, and more through its storefront. But how much cash has it made so far in 2026? Unsurprisingly, enough dough to buy Valve co-founder Gabe Newell a few more superyachts. According to the head of market analysis at Alinea Analytics, Rhys Elliot, Steam has made $15 billion in 2026, and with a massive period of high-profile game releases around the corner, that number is likely to surge even higher before the year is over.

Steam's top releases by gross revenue include AAA games and breakout indie hits, with Forza Horizon 6 leading the charge. The new racing game earned Steam $210.5 million in revenue, while Crimson Desert sales were responsible for $203.3 million, Resident Evil Requiem made just over $200.9 million, and Slay the Spire 2 brought in over $148 million. Rounding out the list is Subnautica 2 at $139.2 million and Meccha Chameleon at $89.8 million.

That's a lot of cheddar, but it only counts for 6.6% of the $15 billion that Steam has made so far. Elliot noted that the top 100 new games by gross revenue make up 15.9% of Steam's total 2026 revenue so far--around $2.4 billion. Crimson Desert is also doing a lot of heavy lifting, as it accounts for about 18% of all new-IP revenue in the top 100. "Of the new-game top 100, 63% were actually new IP, but 52.5% of the revenue ($1.25B) came from established IP," Elliot wrote. "But it’s worth noting Crimson Desert, with its $203M, accounts for about 18% of all new-IP revenue in the top 100. When we take Crimson out of the analysis, the 62 new-IP games make up only about 39%. So yeah, a lot of established IP is doing the legwork, as you'd expect."

Looking ahead, Steam's coffers can expect an influx of cash from highly anticipated releases like Phantom Blade Zero, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, and Gears of War: E-Day, just to name a few. Valve gets a cut from whatever is sold on Steam, including the lucrative microtransactions and DLC that accompany most games these days. Microsoft has made a big announcement about one of the big perks of Xbox Game Pass, cloud streaming, and the news is not great.

Starting in November, Microsoft will put limits on how many hours per month people can use the service, and then allow people to pay more to unlock more time. Below is a breakdown of how many hours you'll get included with the tier of Game Pass you're subscribed to:

Game Pass Ultimate: 15 hours

Game Pass Premium: 10 hours

Game Pass Essential: 5 hours

Microsoft said it understands this is a "meaningful change," especially for those who use the cloud regularly for gaming. However, the company said it estimates that these changes will impact about 4% of Game Pass subscribers, though the company did not share any specifics on how it arrived at that projection.

For people who want or need more monthly streaming hours, Microsoft will allow people to buy more--but pricing was not announced.

Additionally, Microsoft said that in November, for the first time, people will not need to have an Xbox Game Pass membership to stream games with the cloud. People outside of Game Pass will be able to buy cloud playtime through the Xbox Store, though, again, pricing was not shared. Microsoft said this option is meant to appeal to people who don't want to subscribe to a recurring membership like Game Pass and only want "occasional access."

"We’re introducing this model because the cost of providing cloud gaming grows as more people use it and play for longer. We understand that for some players the practical result is a higher cost," Microsoft said. The company added that it will "listen closely" to player feedback and make adjustments if necessary.

Xbox's cloud gaming service runs on Azure servers, and the Azure business is booming. For the first time ever, Microsoft just revealed how much money it makes on Azure quarterly, and the latest numbers showed $29.4 billion in sales. As relayed by Reuters, that's behind Amazon's latest quarterly revenue for AWS of $42.2 billion but ahead of Google's $24.8 billion cloud business results.

During today's State of Play broadcast, Sony announced that two limited-edition Grand Theft Auto 6-themed DualSense controllers will be released.

They'll come in black or white and feature distinctive Leonida-themed graphics and coloring. Both have pastel pink icons on the buttons, with a blue-purple shift that sparkles along the bottom of the controller.

You can get the controller in black or white.

On the rear of the controllers, the Grand Theft Auto logo is embossed, while the grips maintain the standard PlayStation icon texture.

Elsewhere, the GTA 6 logo is etched on to the touchpad, and palm-tree-like shapes are embossed on the controller grips.

Both controls launch alongside GTA 6 on its release date, November 19. Surely there's no better way to experience the biggest gaming release of the decade so far? They'll set you back $85 each.

At least you'll no longer have to mash the X button on your new controller, as it's been confirmed that there's a new mechanic for sprinting in GTA 6. In other GTA 6 news, you won't have to tend to Jason and Lucia's romantic relationship if you don't want to.
