News - Review: Horizon Chase 2 – More Arcade Racing, With Some Bumps In The Road

Horizon Chase 2 isn’t the most interesting racing game out there, but damn, if it isn’t hard to put down! It may not match the high-speed hijinks of kart racers starring Mario, Crash Bandicoot, or Sonic the Hedgehog, nor does it hit the same destructive highs of Burnout or the high-fidelity, simulative thrill found in other platforms’ exclusive driving games, Forza and Gran Turismo. Instead, you just go fast and feel good doing it. In other words, Horizon Chase 2 is arcade-y fun, and good at pretty much exactly what its title implies, though not much more, and it hits some bumps in the road on Switch.

Like Aquiris’ predecessor, Horizon Chase Turbo, Horizon Chase 2 is a throwback to a bygone arcade era; the only thing that matters is that horizon and the finish line that lies somewhere beyond. There’s no gimmick or catch. Everything around you becomes a blur as you hit dizzying speeds as you race through low-fidelity courses offering cute renditions of places like Morocco, Japan, the Continental U.S., and Brazil.

That said, Horizon Chase 2 seems to have learned the wrong things from the first game’s success. In what seems like an effort to push the series forward, this sequel goes too far in some places and not far enough in others. Instead of Horizon Chase’s bright, sharp environments, some of Chase 2’s feel muddier and much more drab. There are still highlights, but it’s almost like Aquiris tried to create more realistic levels and got caught in an awkward lane between charming, retro visuals and modern, high-fidelity graphics.

Luckily, the soundtrack’s high energy hasn’t faltered. Composed by Barry Leitch, it nails that synthy, pulsating feel you’d expect from a classic racer from the ’90s and early 2000s. Every track here’s a ripper, and it’s playing at all times, pushing you into the next horizon.

Certain modes bring small tweaks that add a modicum of extra depth to Chase 2’s pure ‘gotta go fast’ mentality. In World Tour, you’ll (you guessed it) race in courses around the world, doing your best to podium as you pick up collectible blue coins that populate the race track. The blue coins are the only real change from the races in other modes. If you manage to place first in a race and collect all of the blue coins scattered across a track, you’ll earn a special trophy and unlock car parts. Upgrading and leveling cars in World Tour could be better. Instead of earning garage-wide level-up options, you earn upgrades and unlocks for one car at a time, meaning you’re probably going to be locked to one car at a time.

Horizon Chase 2 does do a good job of giving you new, leveled-up cars each time you complete a specific country’s courses, though. They can’t all be winners, but each car feels distinct from the last. A luxury sedan with lots of horsepower feels tanky and hard to steer but just sings in long straightaways. Conversely, the maneuverable hybrid zips around corners like a treat but doesn’t hit very high speeds. None of the courses are exactly impossible to complete with any specific vehicle, but there are some that reward different traits more than others.

Knowing those strengths and weaknesses in a normal race isn’t as important as it is in Time Trials, where your speed, precision, and skill are put to the test. These challenges (which are all completely optional) function a bit differently from the time trials you might find elsewhere. Instead of racing along a path against the clock, you’re tasked with hitting a specific time by picking up time coins, which will each reduce your race time by one second, and making clever use of strategically placed boost pads (like what you’d expect from a Mario Kart or F-Zero). Suddenly, times that seemed unrealistically low – like 11 seconds for a three-lap course that typically takes 90 seconds to complete – appear within your reach. It’ll usually take a few tries, but these are the best part of Horizon Chase 2. And they’re tough as nails (and unfortunately sparse).

Captured on Nintendo Switch (Docked)

Other modes boil down to the same kinds of races in other formats. For the most part, they swap blue coins out for little power pickups that, once you collect them all, give you a temporary speed boost that lasts longer than the four boosts you start each race with. Otherwise, the only thing that varies is the order of the courses presented to you in a four-race series.

Zooming through these races with reckless, breakneck abandon feels good, but the Switch doesn’t exactly love it and there are some significant dips in the frame rate. The Switch really chugs, but on the plus side, because your eyes are almost always on the road ahead and your car, the frame drops don’t affect your performance — they’re just noticeable. The frame rate did hold up surprisingly well in split-screen, though. The dips occurred at the same frequency in and out of split-screen multiplayer.

On the other hand, crashes are a different story. We encountered multiple full-on crashes. While they seem rooted in Horizon Chase 2’s frustrating insistence that you log into an Epic Games account, they’re still frustrating nonetheless. Clicking on an option that requires the login, like starting the game, and then declining before clicking it again caused the game to crash. In other words, if you have an internet connection, you’re all but forced to log into an Epic Games account to play Horizon Chase 2. The almost-always-online nature that comes from the multiplayer itself works well enough, with online play feeling smooth and lag-free. But requiring an Epic login to view leaderboards or start the game takes a heavy toll on the game’s otherwise breezy online functionality.

Captured on Nintendo Switch (Handheld/Undocked)

Its UI has a weird bug that seems tied to Chase 2’s insistence to be always signed in and online where every button prompt in the UI — stuff like ‘A Next,’ ‘X Retry,’ or ‘B Back’ — all get replaced with a prompt for a button that doesn’t exist on Switch: ‘RB’. It’s a frustrating bug that leaves a lot of the menu navigation up to guesswork. Sure, ‘A’ to proceed or go to the next screen totally makes sense, but it’s still a pretty serious issue that lacked rhyme or reason.

Conclusion

Horizon Chase 2 isn’t going to set the world on fire. No matter how fun it is to fly across the highway at blazing speed, no amount of speed can disguise the fairly limited breadth of content available. In fact, that speed only makes courses blur together even more. Ultimately, you’re left with a fun but shallow arcade racer that feels disappointingly shaky on Switch.

Well, it’s the end of September. Feel sick yet? Let’s discuss some weekend gaming plans to help out.

Before we dive into all that fun stuff, though, let’s first take a look at some of this week’s highlights. We heard the news that Hideki Kamiya was leaving PlatinumGames, took a look at the new collaboration between Pokémon and the Van Gogh Museum — and kept up with the ensuing scalping drama — and finally got another addition to the NSO GBA library in the shape of Kirby & the Amazing Mirror.

We also set out to find your thoughts on which version of Wind Waker has the best cel-shaded style and we all got together to chat about our video game palate cleansers.

Over in reviews, we took on the “must-play tactical RPG” Wargroove 2 and cheered as the Switch finally got a good football game with EA Sports FC 24.

Now, a selection of the Nintendo Life team is looking ahead to our weekend gaming plans. Have a read through what we’ll be playing and then take to the comments to leave us some plans of your own.

Jim Norman, Staff Writer

How many weeks in a row can Jim keep the same gaming plans challenge. I am still steadily chugging my way through both Sea of Stars and Metroid Prime Remastered, reminding myself every couple of hours just how stacked the GOTY discussion is going to be this time around. I have also finally re-acquired Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (thanks to some of my wonderful friends) after losing my cartridge a year ago — time to check out some of those catchily-titled “Booster Course Pass Waves”, I think.

Mostly, however, I will be playing more Baldur’s Gate 3. Am I still completely intimidated by the hundreds of hours of playtime ahead of me? Yes, yes I am. But goodness me this game slaps.

[embedded content]
Subscribe to Nintendo Life on YouTube

Watch on YouTube

Ollie Reynolds, Staff Writer

Without sounding like a broken record at this point, I’m afraid I’m not playing a whole lot on the Switch at the moment. I’m dipping into a bit of Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury every now and then, but that’s really it.

The thing is, I’m still playing Resident Evil 4 and Cyberpunk 2077 over on the PS5. I’m completely addicted to RE4’s Mercenaries mode at the moment; Capcom really nailed the inclusion of Wesker as a playable character, and the music is simply exquisite. I’m also going to be jumping into COCOON on Xbox Game Pass this weekend too.

Sorry, Switch.

Kate Gray, Contributor

This weekend! I’m going to be playing STARFIELD because, I don’t know? It’s no Fallout: New Vegas but it has the same satisfying shoot-a-boy thing going on, so it’s FUN. I just wish everything wasn’t so far apart. On my Switch, I’ve started playing Slay the Spire again. Mostly because of Moonstone Island. Am I allowed to mention Moonstone Island? The game I worked on? It came out last week and it’s been really fun. I’m not playing that though because I already did.

[embedded content]
Subscribe to Nintendo Life on YouTube

Watch on YouTube

Gavin Lane, Editor

It’s a week of returners for me. More Trombone Champ, more Sea of Stars, more Vampire Survivors, more F-Zero 99, more Tears of the Kingdom. MOARRRRRRR…

That’s quite enough from us, but what are you all up to? Drop the game that you will be maining in the poll above and then take to the comments to let us know what else you have on the cards.

One of the surprises of Nintendo’s recent Direct broadcast was the announcement Cing’s classic point-and-click adventure series Another Code would be getting an enhanced release on the Nintendo Switch. It will contain the 2005 DS title Another Code: Two Memories (known as Trace Memory in North America) and the 2009 sequel Another Code: R – A Journey into Lost Memories from the Wii era.

If you’re wondering just how much of an improvement the latest version is, the YouTube channel GameXplain has put together a side-by-side graphics comparison video showing the original DS release alongside the new Switch version. As you can see, this new version is a massive step up from the original. It’s also changed the perspective slightly, so the third-person camera is now directly behind the characters.

Unfortunately, there’s no side-by-side of the new game next to the Wii release, but maybe we’ll get this in time.

If you’re not familiar with this series, you’ll take on the role of Ashley Robbins who is on a journey to find out what’s happened to her parents who went missing years ago and are believed to be dead. We won’t go beyond this due to spoilers, but this collection will likely be worth a look if you’re a fan of mystery-based point-and-click gameplay, and didn’t experience the originals.

This review, penned by Philip J Reed — our much-missed friend and Nintendo Life contributor — was originally published in January 2012. We’re updating and republishing it to mark the game’s arrival in the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack GBA library.

We have to hand this much to Kirby & The Amazing Mirror: it certainly isn’t afraid of trying new things. We might not be totally convinced of the necessity of those things, of course, but it’s always nice to see a series attempt to expand its boundaries somewhat.

The story forges no new ground whatsoever, though, as it’s based on the standard light world/dark world dynamic that we’ve seen in so many of Nintendo’s flagship franchises by this point that it’s practically a sub-genre. Kirby’s mission is to collect the shards of a magical mirror that will allow him to seal off the dark world for good, and let Dream Land get back to… whatever it is Dream Land does when it’s not under attack by something.

When you start playing, you’ll feel as though you’re in familiar territory: cute visuals, bouncy tunes, and some pretty standard platforming abound. Once you progress a little further, however, you’ll realise that this isn’t your standard, level-based Kirby adventure. Multiple exits adorn nearly every room, and if you find a map you can open it up and see just how convoluted the path ahead really is.

You see, within a single level you’ll fight several bosses and reach multiple goal rooms, but that doesn’t mean your work in that level is done. It’s up to you to scour every corner and unlock every secret, both of which will require much backtracking and pathfinding, giving this Kirby game a peculiar Metroid-like vibe.

This idea is appealing: Dream Land is quirky and varied enough that a looser allowance for exploration should be a good thing. In practice, though, it becomes irritating: rooms start to look the same before very long, and for most of the game you can only access certain levels through particular rooms in other levels. If you want to return somewhere to uncover a secret you couldn’t find before, you’re likely to find yourself trying every possible path until you stumble upon the right one.

Second Opinion

Amazing Mirror is such a unique entry in the Kirby series. Visually, this game is pure poyo perfection, with bright colours and charming location designs. Gameplay, on the other hand, is where I found myself not enjoying this entry as much. The number of rooms felt very overwhelming, with a lack of direction throughout. Now being added to the NSO library, this game gets a better chance to shine with online multiplayer being supported — it’s easier than ever to play with friends. If you’re after something different from the usual Kirby formula, it’s still worth giving this one a go.

Community Manager

The map, once you learn to read it as an abstract, is certainly helpful, but you’ll need a different map for each level. The hidden exits and alternate paths should liven up the experience somewhat, but, in actuality, it just manages to hide simple tasks behind tedious backtracking.

Kirby’s abilities shouldn’t surprise anybody who’s played a Kirby game before: he can fly, swim, inhale enemies, and steal powers. So far, so familiar. The controls feel a mite sluggish in their responsiveness, which really becomes a problem during boss fights and other fast-paced situations. There’s a slight delay between input and execution, and once that leads to a few cheap deaths you’ll come to regard it as a serious flaw.

Unfortunately, that’s not the worst of the problems with Kirby & The Amazing Mirror. One conceit is that Kirby has been split into four entities of different colours, and let’s just say that the traditional pink Kirby must have all the brains. The other three Kirbys chaotically bound about, far more irritating than they are helpful. You can’t control them, so you just need to let them dominate the screen with their antics as they steal powers you wanted, get in your way, and even budge you into enemies and hazards.

Ostensibly, these additional three Kirbys are here to help, but good luck with that. Their AI is an embarrassment, and it’s a particular problem when you need one of them to trigger a switch, or a bomb block, or — heaven forbid — help you move something heavy by inhaling it with you. These three Kirbys do not stop moving long enough to realise you need their help, and their inclusion — and necessity — in this game drags the experience down severely. When playing multiplayer, however, each player gets to control a Kirby, and all of you work together or go off your own way and do whatever you want, even being able to go to completely opposite ends of the game world. With other people, it suddenly makes more sense (and, thankfully, the Nintendo Switch Online version enables you to play with others locally or over the internet).

It was a bizarre enough decision to give Kirby a cellphone in this game (yes, really), and the fact that he uses it to summon these rampaging nincompoops just adds insult to injury. The fact that the cellphone also has a function that causes you to exit the stage immediately makes things even worse: press the wrong button in the heat of the moment and you’re back to the start. The third or fourth time this happens, you might start to wonder why you’re bothering. We sure did.

The game’s not without its charms, though: the presentation is typically strong, with brilliant visuals and music as always. In fact, playing in short bursts can be quite fun: the classic Kirby actions of inhaling enemies and whooping them with their own weapons are as great here as they ever were. Unfortunately, the game isn’t really structured for short play sessions, what with its maze-like design and long-term goals rather than short, stage-based missions. There are a few minigames available to play which aren’t much fun solo but were largely intended for multiplayer and definitely work better with friends.

The main appeal of the game is meant to be the exploration, and for many it will be. For us, though, the exploration doesn’t feel particularly rewarding, the constant backtracking is unintuitive and dull, and your required companions are a group of hyperactive imbeciles. Fortunately, HAL would eventually get multiple-Kirby gameplay right in Kirby Mass Attack. This time around, though, consider it one big, well-intentioned misstep.

Conclusion

Kirby & The Amazing Mirror tries to introduce a lot of new things to the series, and because of that it was destined from the start to be a divisive title. Ultimately, though, we feel that the innovations here just aren’t particularly fun — certainly not for solo players. Sluggish controls and abysmal AI for your required companions sour the experience, and exploration quickly becomes more of a chore than a reward. Kirby’s had his share of ups and downs, certainly, but this is not the game we want to remember him by.

Epic Games, the creator of Unreal Engine and the ludicrously popular Fortnite, is reportedly laying off 16% of its workforce, which works out at around 900 employees.

The news comes via Bloomberg, with a person familiar with the matter stating that an internal announcement of the job cuts was sent out in a staff memo. In the memo, CEO Tim Sweeney stated “For a while now, we’ve been spending way more money than we earn. I had long been optimistic that we could power through this transition without layoffs, but in retrospect, I see this was unrealistic.”

A total of 870 employees will be affected, and Sweeney states that no more job cuts are being planned beyond this. Around two-thirds of the cuts are said to be within teams that lie outside of Epic’s ‘core development’.

That said, one of the staff members affected was Ed Fear, director and writer at Mediatonic, who worked on titles such as Murder by Numbers. Mediatonic was founded in 2005 and was acquired by Epic Games in 2021.

Unfortunately, I am one of the people affected by the layoffs today at Epic. I’m absolutely devastated to leave behind so many amazing Mediatonic colleagues who I loved.

So: the job search begins! If you need an experienced writer or narrative designer, please get in touch

— Ed Fear (@edfear) September 28, 2023

To coincide with this news, it’s also recently been revealed that the price of Fortnite’s V-Bucks will be increasing in October, with Epic stating that the ‘adjustments are based on economic factors such as inflation and currency fluctuations’.

Here’s how the changes will be reflected going forward:

1,000 V-Bucks – $8.99 (currently $7.99)

2,800 V-Bucks – $22.99 (currently $19.99)

5,000 V-bucks – $36.99 (currently $31.99)

13,500 V-bucks- $89.99 (currently $79.99)

A whopping six years on from its successful Kickstarter campaign, developer Atooi has announced a release date for Hatch Tales: it’s finally coming on 28th March 2024.

The cute platformer — an enhanced HD port of 3DS title Chicken Wiggle and formerly known Chicken Wiggle Workshop — was successfully crowdfunded back in early 2018, surpassing its $30,000 goal with a total of $35,634 from 1,553 backers.

With an initial estimated delivery of December 2018 and sporadic updates via the campaign page, discontent amongst Kickstarter backers has led to significant criticism over communication from the Austin, TX-based studio throughout development.

Despite its prolonged incubation time — described as an “adventurous development journey” in Atooi’s press release — it seems Hatch Tales is finally preparing to emerge on the sixth anniversary of the initial Kickstarter campaign.

A post to backers of the project informed them of the news earlier today. Here’s some text from the press release:

Image: Atooi

Hatch Tales – formerly known as Chicken Wiggle Workshop – has had an adventurous development journey since its successful Kickstarter campaign in March, 2018. On the sixth anniversary of the campaign, the wait will finally be over.

Hatch Tales is a stylish 2D platformer with climbing mechanics featuring Hatch, a flightless hawk mountaineer, who uses his trusty grappling hook to climb up mountains, stun enemies, and zip across chasms!

We are planning a special Atooi media event that will be announced in the future, where viewers will be taken on a deep dive into the egg-citing features of Hatch Tales. Follow us to stay up to date with announcements.

[embedded content]
A 2020 trailer for the game

For backers, this one has been a very long time coming and some may be understandably sceptical at this date announcement until the game is sitting on their Switch and they can see how it compares to the initial vision outlined in the campaign.

We’re in the process of speaking to Atooi founder Jools Watsham about this game’s long gestation (among other things) for an upcoming interview, so keep an eye out for that in the coming days.

2023 has been a good year for tactics games on the Switch. Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot marked the return of two classic GBA games while Fire Emblem Engage brought the series’s focus to its strategic roots. Chucklefish and Robotality’s Wargroove 2 is the next SRPG joining the fray, and while its adorable pixel-art graphics might trick you into thinking it is a watered-down, kid-friendly version of the genre, it provides loads of depth to keep even the most battle-worn combatants engaged. It just manages to look cute as heck while doing it.

If you played 2019’s Wargroove — which was inspired by the original Advance Wars — then you’ll know exactly what to expect from the sequel. The world is the same, but new factions are battling it out for control of the strange relics leftover from a long-destroyed civilisation. There isn’t a recap of the events of the first game for new players, but Wargroove 2 does a good job of getting you up to speed without dragging things out too long. The campaign provides exactly the information you need from the first game, but if you want to get fully up to speed, there is a robust codex that you can read as a primer to help fill the gaps.

Captured on Nintendo Switch (Handheld/Undocked)

This time around there are three campaigns to play through, each with unique characters and a plot that joins up with the other two in the final act of the game. The pixel art and the cozy soundtrack help breathe life into a charming cast of characters, which will make you want to keep playing through the game’s story mode. Visually, the developers do a good job of maintaining the pixel art in docked mode to keep it from looking distorted, meaning that the game looks just as good no matter how big or small the screen is.

The gameplay of Wargroove 2 is also remarkably similar to its predecessor, though that is largely because there was very little room for improvement. Each faction has a similar range of troop types, including swordsmen, archers, and cavalry. These units have the sort of rock-paper-scissors relationship with each other that you’d expect – cavalry can tear through swordsmen but not spearmen, for example. Terrain also plays an important part in your strategy, with forests, mountains, and rivers either giving bonuses or penalties to defence.

It is all fairly standard for the genre, though the return of the Critical Hit system adds an extra layer of strategy to each map. Every unit can deal massive damage if you position them in the right way; Swordsmen do their best work when adjacent to a Commander unit, Spearmen benefit from being next to other spearmen, and Archers crit when you don’t move them before they attack. This system makes the combat just complex enough that you’ll agonise over the particular placement of each member of your army, either to ensure their survival or to make sure their inevitable death leads to a greater victory.

Captured on Nintendo Switch (Handheld/Undocked)

With that complexity comes difficulty and there are some very tough missions in Wargroove 2. The default difficulty setting is Hard, which limits the number of redos you get per map and increases the amount of damage you take from enemy units. We’re not ashamed to admit we lowered the difficulty setting to Medium after the prologue and found that the maps were still challenging but far more manageable at this level, but even on this setting, the enemy troops’ AI is surprisingly competent and makes some clever decisions to keep you on your toes.

Another returning feature from the first game is Commander units, which have powerful Groove abilities that can either deal massive damage or shift both friendly and enemy units around the battlefield. There is a small new wrinkle to the Grooves in Wargroove which allows you to supercharge them to increase their range or strength. Some of these skills are too situational to feel useful, like the one that rotates units around the Commander, making certain units feel less balanced than others, but overall it remains a fun feature in an already fun game.

Captured on Nintendo Switch (Docked)

Our favourite part of the combat in Wargroove 2 is the healthy variety of objectives that each map offers during the campaigns. Sometimes you need to protect your base for a certain number of turns while other missions require you to navigate through a heavy fog of war. Most maps have optional objectives that you can complete if you’re after an even bigger challenge, so each of the maps has at least some replayability to them.

If the core campaigns aren’t enough for you, there is also the Conquest mode, which drops you into a gauntlet of procedurally generated maps, where you’ll rarely get the chance to respawn units as your health slowly dwindles. The further you get into each run, the more Shards you’ll earn, which can be redeemed for new units and stronger abilities, making successive runs easier. If roguelikes are your thing, you could conceivably spend as much time here as you do in the main story.

Unfortunately, we didn’t get a chance to test the online features of the game, including multiplayer, due to playing the game pre-release and there not being any fan-made maps to try or other players online. Similarly, we couldn’t try out the campaign editor feature due to a bug that caused our Switch to crash every time we tried to load the feature. Once these features are fixed in the inevitable future patch, Wargroove 2 will be positively bursting with content.

Captured on Nintendo Switch (Handheld/Undocked)

Even without the online features, Wargroove 2 can stand proud among the other excellent tactics games we’ve seen this year on Switch. The pixel art aesthetic and lovely soundtrack add plenty of charm to the characters and the writing has the right balance of tongue-in-cheek humour and drama to make it memorable. There are tactics games out there with bigger budgets or more impressive cutscenes, but Wargroove 2 is still a must-play for fans of the genre.

Conclusion

It isn’t often that war is a cozy affair, but Wargroove 2 manages to pull it off. We loved the game’s colourful, vibrant art and playful writing, and there is enough depth and variety in the main campaign to satisfy most tactics fans while the Conquest mode will offer an even greater challenge for those seeking it. It doesn’t change much from the previous game; it just tightens up some of the existing mechanics and adds a couple of extra wrinkles to an already great formula. It’s a brilliant sequel, and yet another worthy successor to Advance Wars.

Award-winning UK publisher Lost in Cult is teaming up with our sister site Time Extension for The Console Chronicles, a new book covering the history of home console gaming, from the earliest Pong machines to the present day.

The Console Chronicles is the follow-up to A Handheld History, a previous Lost in Cult book focused on portable play. This new tome – which will run for more than 400 pages and will be divided into nine sections, each representing a generation in console hardware – will feature the talents of Julian “Jaz” Rignall (C&VG, Mean Machines), Kurt Kalata (Hardcore Gaming 101), James Mielke (1UP), Sara Heritage, Christian Donlan (Eurogamer), Ashley Day (GamesTM), Jon Cartwright (Good Vibes Gaming), Darryl Still (Atari), Van Burnham (Supercade), Tom Charnock (The Dreamcast Junkyard) and many, many more.

In fact, there are some more familiar names adding their words to this one – our very own Alana Hagues, Alex Olney, PJ O’Reilly, Liam Doolan, Gavin Lane and Ollie Reynolds. That’s right – they’ll all be contributing to The Console Chronicles, alongside fellow Hookshot Media staffers Stephen Tailby, Aaron Bayne, and Fraser Gilbert.

With bespoke artwork by Stephen Maurice Graham, Raul Higuera, Hannah Kwan Cosselmon, William Exley, and Jack Teagle – not to mention a host of special rewards for those who back this ‘Campaign Edition’ of the book – The Console Chronicles is looking very nice indeed, if we do say so ourselves.

And remember, by pledging your financial support to this project, you’re not only allowing us to produce more exciting books with Lost in Cult, but you’re also directly supporting the work we do across the entire Hookshot Media network.

The Console Chronicles will be sponsored by The Embracer Games Archive.
Pre-orders for the product will launch on the Pix’n Love website on September 27th, 2023 at 4pm BST, with copies priced at €79.90 (roughly £69).

As for what’s included, all pre-orders will contain a Mega Drive / Genesis snap case in addition to the following:

– The Sonic Origins Plus physical game for Nintendo Switch (includes: a slipcase, a 20-page artbook and a reversible cover).
– A certificate numbered to 1200 copies.
– A brand new 96-page artbook.
– One acrylic plate.
– Four lithographs.
– A large-format cardboard box with screen-printed plastic sleeve.

We’re quite taken with the new art book, particularly if it’s of a decent size and quality. As for the rest? Well, it’s nice, and we’re sure it will appeal to hardcore fans of the franchise.

In our Sonic Origins Plus review, we said that “there’s no escaping the sense that Sega could’ve done a lot more for this update and chose not to”, ultimately awarding the updated compilation a score of 6/10.

Wonder, which does exactly what it says it’s going to do — go over the game’s features.

Now, if you were around for the Super Mario Bros. Wonder Direct at the beginning of the month, you might be getting a bit of déjà vu here, and that’s because this trailer is pretty much a distilled version of what we got then. There are a few new locations and levels on show, but this is a digested version of what the Direct gave us.

That means we get to see the Flower Kingdom in its full glory, as well as the new power-ups — Elephant, Drill, and Bubble — online modes, and more. The narration is slightly different too. We’ve got a rundown of everything that was shown off in the Direct, and this trailer, below.

Basically, there’s a lot to love, and the trailer serves as a good way to recap what to expect from next month’s 2D Mario adventure. Yep, that’s right, it’s less than a month out now, and it’s shaping up to be another amazing Mario game — if the first hour or so of the game is anything to go by.

While it hasn’t been officially announced for Switch (or, indeed, any specific platform at the moment), we’re getting ourselves all excited about Tales of the Shire, an upcoming “heart-warming” Lord of the Rings game from Wētā Workshop and Private Division, due out on “consoles” in 2024.

Now, we don’t actually know all that much about this one for the moment — the above teaser is more of a title reveal than anything else — though the following description from the Tales of the Shire website has us thinking that this might not be quite as action-packed as many of the LotR games that we have seen in the past:

Your cosy Hobbit life awaits in Tales of the Shire, a heart-warming, new, The Lord of the Rings™ game due out in 2024 on console and PC

“Cosy”? “Heart-warming”? We’d be a fool-of-a-Took to put all our eggs in one basket here, but is this screaming life/farm sim to anyone else? Assuming that this will focus only on the goings-on of The Shire, we’re expecting something a little more laid back — and wouldn’t that be sort of wonderful?

Of course, the other obvious omission from the teaser is any information about which consoles it will be released on — the game’s Twitter bio specifies “consoles”, plural, worry not. The Switch is very much part of the Fellowship when it comes to ‘cosy games’ so we would picture it being well in the running for a release slot, though only time will tell.

Our great eyes will continue to be ever-watchful over the coming months for any more information on this one as our fingers remain firmly crossed that it will be adventuring our way next year.

Do you think we’ll see Tales of the Shire on Switch? Let us know your hopes for the game in the comments below.

Capcom has announced that Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy will be launching on Nintendo Switch on January 25th, 2024.

The collection contains Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies, and Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice, all of which are playable on the Nintendo 3DS. However, since the unfortunate closure of the 3DS eShop earlier this year, a collection on Switch sure sounds like the perfect remedy, right?

The release will also come wit a bunch of special content, so let’s see what Capcom has in store of us:

– Orchestra Hall – The soundtracks of all three games plus 14 select tracks from the Ace Attorney 15th Anniversary Orchestra Concert and the Ace Attorney 2019 Orchestra Concert make for a total of 175 tracks. Watch the new chibi character illustrations dance along to the music as you enjoy your favorite songs.
– Art Library – This library is chock full of character designs, background art, and even the special prologue anime for Spirit of Justice. We’ve never included so much! Original art commissioned for this collection can also be found here!
– Animation Studio – Freely create the scene of your dreams with character models and animations, background music, and voiced lines from the games—all at your fingertips. Place characters in situations unthinkable in the main games!
– Special Episodes and Costumes – Special Episodes and costumes that were only available as pre-order specials or paid content are included in this collection. Play with special costumes on for even wackier trials. Enjoy the two Special Episodes from Dual Destinies and Spirit of Justice, “Turnabout Reclaimed” and “Turnabout Time Traveler.” An unusual client and some familiar faces make these must-play episodes for any Ace Attorney fan!

Will you be picking up Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy in the new year? Please present your case to the court in the comments section below.

Just as Disney Speedstorm prepares to leave early access and speed into the free-to-play realm next week, publisher Gameloft has today announced that it will be marking the occasion with the start of a new Aladdin-themed season on 28th September.

Much like the previous Lilo and Stitch-inspired chapter, the upcoming Season 4 will be introducing us to a whole new world (sorry) with four new racers — Aladdin, Jasmine, Genie and Jafar — a new ‘Cave of Wonders’ course and we’d expect a helping of new customisation options and crew members too.

Gameloft previously announced that Disney Speedstorm will be leaving early access on 28th September too, so it’s likely that Aladdin and co. will be the first faces that many of us see when we get to try out the free-to-play racer next week.
