[Dev News] GameMaker Going FREE For Commercial Use - xSicKxBot - 10-23-2026 Shortly after being acquired by Opera, GameMaker announced a new completely free tier of GameMaker that enabled you download and use a complete version of GameMaker Studio for non-commercial use. Today they have made another major announcement that will effectively remove that commercial usage limitation. Today’s GameMaker announcement: Quote:Today, we’re excited to announce that our next-generation runtime, GMRT, will be made free for commercial use starting January 1, 2027, allowing developers to create and distribute their games for free across desktop, mobile, web, and GX Games. So a few key things to point out. First, thing will only take effect on January 1st, 2027. Second, it will only apply to games created using the new runtime – GMRT. If you wish to use the legacy runtime you will continue to require a GameMaker Pro license. That said, for a clean sheet game, I can think of few reasons why you wouldn’t start off targeting the newer, higher performance GMRT. This will greatly reduce the value proposition of a GameMaker Pro license, relegating it to Build/CI tools and support for the GMS2 runtime as the only major features. Console support is still a separate license completely, unchanged by this announcement.
