Dr. David Roberson, became a father figure for her. He said that Shy had always been a leader. But she\u2019s only ever been comfortable in the background.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe would tell the kids what to do,\u201d he says, his whole face smiling at her as they reminisce in his office on one of Shy\u2019s many return trips home, \u201cand then when they did it, she would sit back and act like she didn\u2019t tell them anything. She never wanted credit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though confident, Shy is still deeply and visibly uncomfortable with any sort of <span class=\"emdash-wrap\">attention\u2014she<\/span> hates having her picture taken and avoids eye contact when asked to explain her seemingly untiring service.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s my mom again,\u201d Shy responds, when asked where her humility comes from, pulling forward a few of her shoulder-length braids to cover her mouth. \u201cShe would say, \u2018It\u2019s not about money. It\u2019s not about fame. It\u2019s not about recognition. It\u2019s all about how you treat people.\u2019 That was it. I didn\u2019t know how to operate any other way.\u201d<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-37661 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.sickgaming.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/community-builder-couldnt-turn-away-when-she-heard-about-flints-water-crisis.png\" alt=\"A small child sits on her mother's lap\" width=\"450\" height=\"450\"><\/p>\n<p>The apple hasn\u2019t fallen far from the giving tree.<\/p>\n<p>Shy\u2019s <span class=\"emdash-wrap\">life-purpose\u2014found<\/span> through the tenants of love, faith, and <span class=\"emdash-wrap\">humility\u2014now<\/span> inform all of Shy\u2019s outreach work, both professionally and in her volunteer activities. And in her relationship with her mom.<\/p>\n<p>They are each other\u2019s favorite people\u2014\u201dnext to Jesus\u201d they\u2019ve both added.<\/p>\n<p>Wary of taking credit for her clear influence on Shy, Jackie believed the source of Shy\u2019s devotion to doing good is simple.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the capacity for love that both of us have; that\u2019s the foundation,\u201d Jackie said. \u201cFrom there, you don\u2019t have that far to go.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Shy\u2019s pastor, Rev.
