{"id":97402,"date":"2019-07-26T16:48:00","date_gmt":"2019-07-26T16:48:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/347480"},"modified":"2019-07-26T16:48:00","modified_gmt":"2019-07-26T16:48:00","slug":"pubg-corp-says-it-has-buried-the-hatchet-with-fortnite-dev-epic-games","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sickgaming.net\/blog\/2019\/07\/26\/pubg-corp-says-it-has-buried-the-hatchet-with-fortnite-dev-epic-games\/","title":{"rendered":"PUBG Corp says it has buried the hatchet with Fortnite dev Epic Games"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><big><em><strong>\u201cWhile I think we can learn a little bit from how that\u2019s working over there, just like all games learn from each other, I don\u2019t think their model&nbsp;exactly&nbsp;works for us.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/big><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8211; PUBG Corp&#8217;s Brian Corrigan details the relationship between it and&nbsp;<\/em>Fortnite<em> dev Epic Games.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Despite past animosity, <em>PlayerUnknown\u2019s Battlegrounds <\/em>developer PUBG Corp says there\u2019s no bad blood between it and <em>Fortnite<\/em> developer Epic Games, going so far as to tell PCGamesN that \u201cthey\u2019re one of our best partners.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In that conversation, which can be found in full <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamesn.com\/pubg\/epic\">here<\/a>, PUBG Corp studio director Brian Corrigan explains that <em>PlayerUnknown&#8217;s Battlegrounds<\/em>&nbsp;and <em>Fortnite<\/em> have grown into two quite different games, though they can learn lessons from one another.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI guess what I\u2019m trying to say is, it\u2019s not like we\u2019re taking the blueprint over there and trying to build a better photocopier,\u201d says Corrigan. \u201cThat\u2019s not it. If there\u2019s pieces that work for us, that\u2019s great, because we should learn from the best teachers across a lot of different games, but our formula is unique. That\u2019s something we understand, and we have to always remember: this <em>PUBG<\/em> formula&nbsp;is&nbsp;unique, there really is nothing else out there like it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A relationship between the two companies is expected since <em>PlayerUnknown\u2019s Battlegrounds <\/em>is built on Epic Games\u2019 Unreal Engine and, higher up the ladder, both companies are involved with the Chinese company Tencent.<\/p>\n<p>Still, it&#8217;s quite a different tune from the one PUBG Corp was singing a little over a year ago. Last May, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/319017\/PUBG_Corp_files_copyright_infringement_lawsuit_against_Fortnite_dev_Epic_Games.php\">company filed a lawsuit<\/a>&nbsp;against Epic Games that alleged <em>Fortnite<\/em>\u2019s then-new battle royale mode infringes on PUBG Corp\u2019s copyrights due to its similarity to<em> PlayerUnknown\u2019s Battlegrounds<\/em>. Slightly before the lawsuit was launched, the vice president of PUBG Corp parent company Bluehole accused Epic of \u201creplicating the experience for which&nbsp;<em>Battlegrounds<\/em>&nbsp;is known\u201d through the free-to-play <em>Fortnite<\/em> mode.
