This is&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">often<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;slow, painstaking work in cramped and dangerous conditions.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Enter&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">S<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">nakebot<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">: a&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">5<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2013<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">centimeter<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">-wide robot equipped with lights and cameras that can squeeze into tight spaces. Developed by&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/admission.enrollment.cmu.edu\/pages\/Snakebot-Search-And-Rescue\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">,&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Snakebot<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">can crawl, climb, roll and even swim.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">P<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">rototypes were used in the aftermath of the Mexico City earthquake in September 2017<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">O<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">perators sen<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;the robot to search voids too small or unstable for people or search dogs to enter. Learning from that experience, the team that designed it now plan<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;to add microphones and sensors that can detect hazardous gas.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">In Japan, t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">he&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/fukushima-robot-cleanup\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">meltdown at the Fukushima nuclear plant<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;after the tsunami that struck&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the country<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;in 2011&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">required&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">robots to enter areas that people couldn\u2019t.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Teams sent a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;variety of remote<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2013<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">controlled and autonomous machines<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;to inspect and remove the fuel rods.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Eye in the sky<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Drones are giving emergency services a bird\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2013<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">eye view of disaster zones, which is proving particularly useful in fighting wildfires.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Using&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/californias-fires-face-a-new-high-tech-foe-drones\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">surveillance drones<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;that can stay aloft for hours<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, and&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">small quadcopters<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, operators on the ground&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">can&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">see how a fire is behaving&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">in real time&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">and&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">hazards in the way. Some&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">drones&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">are equipped with thermal<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2013<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">imaging cameras or laser<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2013<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">imaging systems that&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">help&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">firefighters build maps predicting where fire<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;will spread.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">R<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">esearchers are developing ways of using swarms of autonomous drones to assist firefighters on the ground. The Defen<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">e Science and Technology Laboratory in the U.K. and the U<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">S<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;Air Force Research Laboratory recently ran the&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fire-hack.devpost.com\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Swarm and Search AI 2019 Fire Hack<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;competition, looking for new algorithms and AI&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">applications&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">for planning and executing complex drone missions.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Recent devastating blazes like&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2018\/11\/12\/us\/california-wildfires-woolsey-camp-hill-missing\/index.html\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">2018\u2019s Camp Fire in California<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;demonstrate the need for such resources.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">T<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">argeted help<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">When a disaster strikes,&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">large<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;amounts of information fl<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ow<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;into control rooms and emergency call&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">centers<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. Making sense of&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">it<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;is vital to&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">prioritizing&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the response and&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">to&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">deploying<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">resources and personnel&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">correctly<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">AI can trawl through&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hub.packtpub.com\/ai-rescue-5-ways-machine-learning-can-assist-emergency-situations\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">vast quantities of data in a very short time<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, spotting patterns that&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">may not be&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">apparent to people under stress.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Capabilities<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">include<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;prioritizing emergency calls&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">and&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">analyzing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;social media to&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">create<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;a picture of events unfolding in real time.&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalglobe.com\/ecosystem\/open-data\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">DigitalGlobe\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;Open Data Program<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, which provides high-resolution satellite imagery&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">for disaster response<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;was used in the aftermath of Cyclone&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Idai<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;in 2019 to identify damaged roads, buildings and infrastructure from space.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">In September 2018, Microsoft announced the&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/ai\/ai-for-humanitarian-action\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">AI for Humanitarian Action<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;program<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;in collaboration with the United Nations.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;This $40 million, five-year Microsoft initiative harnesses the power of AI to help with disaster recovery and supports nonprofit and humanitarian organizations through financial grants, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.microsoft.com\/en-ca\/2019\/06\/25\/microsoft-partners-with-the-university-of-waterloos-artificial-intelligence-institute-to-address-societys-greatest-challenges\/\">partnerships<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;and technology investments, in addition to&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/programs\/famine-early-action-mechanism\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">technical expertise<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">.
