{"id":96137,"date":"2019-07-04T15:41:07","date_gmt":"2019-07-04T15:41:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gamefromscratch.com\/post.aspx?id=aa0ed3c3-f5a2-4f4e-9664-2eb10ae2d596"},"modified":"2019-07-04T15:41:07","modified_gmt":"2019-07-04T15:41:07","slug":"did-unity-lie-about-enlightens-removal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sickgaming.net\/blog\/2019\/07\/04\/did-unity-lie-about-enlightens-removal\/","title":{"rendered":"Did Unity Lie About Enlighten\u2019s Removal?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday we reported the news that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamefromscratch.com\/post\/2019\/07\/03\/Unity-Removing-Enlighten-Support.aspx\">Unity was removing Enlighten<\/a> from future version of the Unity game engine.&nbsp; I mentioned multiple times in that story that the following statement made very little sense:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Due to Geomerics shutting down Enlighten as a product, Unity is required to remove Enlighten.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Geomerics hasn\u2019t operated Enlighten since 2017 when it was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamesindustry.biz\/articles\/2017-06-15-silicon-studio-acquires-enlighten-tech-from-geomerics\">sold to Silicon Studio<\/a>.&nbsp; Since posting that story, we received the following comment from a representative at Silicon Studio:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamefromscratch.com\/image.axd?picture=image_3435.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"904\" height=\"173\" title=\"image\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sickgaming.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/did-unity-lie-about-enlightens-removal.png\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There was additionally the following conversation on the Unity blog post:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamefromscratch.com\/image.axd?picture=image_3436.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"904\" height=\"480\" title=\"image\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sickgaming.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/did-unity-lie-about-enlightens-removal-1.png\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To clarify then, Enlighten as a product isn\u2019t going away.&nbsp; From my interpretation of events, it seems Unity\u2019s license for Enlighten was expiring so they decided to develop an in-house replacement instead of renewing a license with Silicon Studio.&nbsp; Simply stating that would have been a great deal less misleading than the approach they took,&nbsp; an approach that could arguably harm the perceptions of Enlighten going forward.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">[youtube https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qtfXQLF16WQ&#038;w=853&#038;h=480]<\/p>\n<p class=\"under\"> <span class=\"categories\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamefromscratch.com\/category\/GameDev-News.aspx\">GameDev News<\/a><\/span> <span class=\"tags\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamefromscratch.com\/?tag=\/Unity\" rel=\"tag\">Unity<\/a><\/span> <\/p>\n<hr>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday we reported the news that Unity was removing Enlighten from future version of the Unity game engine.&nbsp; I mentioned multiple times in that story that the following statement made very little sense: Due to Geomerics shutting down Enlighten as a product, Unity is required to remove Enlighten.
