We got a title \u2013 <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nintendo-switch\/animal_crossing_new_horizons\">Animal Crossing: New Horizons<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 and a short trailer detailing the premise, plus a more in-depth look during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=dEh3MPy4GAU\">the Nintendo Treehouse Livestream<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re after details on the game &#8211; now scheduled to arrive on 20th March 2020 &#8211; you\u2019ve come to the right place; we\u2019ve collected everything we know so far about Animal Crossing: New Horizons below for your enjoyment&#8230;.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What We Know&#8230;<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>The premise<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>It seems Nook has a new business venture! He\u2019s sold you a Nook Inc. Deserted Island Getaway Package, although said package only comes with the barest of necessities to survive on the island \u2013 a tent, a lamp and a camper bed. Once you\u2019ve pitched up, it\u2019s up to you to build a life from the ground up using the natural resources you\u2019ll find on the island.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Nook Getaway\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/a3df9145fd7b2\/nook-getaway.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/a3df9145fd7b2\/nook-getaway.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Nook Getaway\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<h3><strong>It\u2019s been delayed to 2020<\/strong> \u2639<\/h3>\n<p>Yep, Animal Crossing: New Horizons has slipped from 2019 into next year &#8211; the game will now be releasing on 20th March 2020. While this is disappointing for people who hoped to be playing it over the holiday season, we\u2019re sure fans would rather wait a little longer than have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/news\/2019\/06\/nintendo_comments_on_animal_crossing_delay_says_employee_work-life_balance_comes_first\">the developers burn themselves out<\/a> or rush Animal Crossing to Switch when it isn\u2019t <em>quite<\/em> ready. We don\u2019t know about you, but our backlog is positively bursting \u2013 there\u2019s <em>plenty<\/em> to be getting on with in the meantime, so another few months isn\u2019t the end of the world.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>You start from scratch<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Rather than arriving in a pre-existing village, you\u2019ll be starting from absolutely nothing in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Speaking on the Nintendo Treehouse Livestream, developers Aya Kyogoku and Hisashi Nogami said they wanted to give players the opportunity to build everything from scratch, as opposed to arriving in a pre-built town. This means you\u2019ll be able to choose the exact location of amenities on your island, but there\u2019s a lot of work to do before we get to that stage\u2026<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Crafting&#8217;s the name of the game<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This seems to be the biggest change from previous games. Borrowing mechanics from <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/mobile\/animal_crossing_pocket_camp\">Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp<\/a><\/strong>, you\u2019ll be finding and harvesting resources to build furniture, tools, clothes and other things as you colonise the island. Materials such as stone, clay and wood can be easily found and used to fashion rudimentary tools at Nook\u2019s crafting station, while Timmy will buy unwanted inventory items giving you cold hard bells. You\u2019ll need hardwood to craft sturdier equipment, although there\u2019s no confirmation of durability meters attached to the fruits of your carpentry (that\u2019s a joke, although it <em>would<\/em> be hilarious to sit down on a bench and have it collapse).<\/p>\n<aside class=\"gallery\">\n<div class=\"col\"><a title=\"Crafting\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/398b72689d6ff\/crafting.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/398b72689d6ff\/crafting.original.png\" alt=\"Crafting\"><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"col\"><a title=\"Workbench\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/bcb8207dc101f\/workbench.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/bcb8207dc101f\/workbench.original.png\" alt=\"Workbench\"><\/a><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<h3><strong>There&#8217;s a pop-up onscreen map<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>During the Treehouse livestream we saw a map in the bottom right corner which would flash up (along with the time in the opposite corner) after you\u2019ve been stationary for a couple of seconds. It showed an airport o the south coast of the island \u2013 will we be greeting new arrivals there and dropping friends\u2019 off at Departures when they go home?<\/p>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Map\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/8f27374a5067a\/map.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/8f27374a5067a\/map.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Map\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<h3><strong>You can place furniture outside<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>As well as the ability to move items in half unit increments (as in <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/3ds\/animal_crossing_happy_home_designer\">Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer<\/a><\/strong>), you can also now drop furniture outside. This means no more living hard; BBQs everyday (on our specially built patio).<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Earn Nook Miles with your NookPhone<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Tom Nook\u2019s expertise knows no bounds; he\u2019s expanded into mobile tech and developed his own branded cell phone. Through this device you manage many of your day-to-day activities and also access your DIY recipes (used to craft your gear). Ever the entrepreneur, Nook also has a \u2018Air Miles\u2019-like system that gives you passive gains as you accomplish tasks both big and small. Even weeding will go towards earning these miles, giving you a constant sense of progression. We wouldn\u2019t get too excited, though. Knowing that swine Nook, redeeming ten thousand miles will probably get you a rubbish keyring or something, and he\u2019ll no doubt want bells as well. Git.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Nook Miles\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/27a0b4438cde8\/nook-miles.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/27a0b4438cde8\/nook-miles.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Nook Miles\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<h3><strong>NookPhone has a camera and apps<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>While the capture button works as you\u2019d expect, you can also use your phone to add filters to your shots and snap selfies to your heart\u2019s content. There&#8217;ll also be other &#8216;apps&#8217; for the NookPhone &#8211; it sure is a versatile bit of kit. No word yet if Crazy Redd can jailbreak it for 5,000 bells.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Camera\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/0c41082c4ab8f\/camera.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/0c41082c4ab8f\/camera.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Camera\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<h3><strong>Accurate Southern Hemisphere seasons<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>As we <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/news\/2019\/06\/animal_crossing_new_horizons_caters_for_players_in_the_southern_hemisphere_finally\">previously reported<\/a>, players in the Southern Hemisphere can finally sync the game to their seasons and get weather that looks a little more like what they see outside the window.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"gallery\">\n<div class=\"col\"><a title=\"Fall\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/91e19215f67bd\/fall.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/91e19215f67bd\/fall.original.png\" alt=\"Fall\"><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"col\"><a title=\"Winter\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/b6496132d7798\/winter.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/b6496132d7798\/winter.original.png\" alt=\"Winter\"><\/a><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<h3><strong>There&#8217;s same-console 4-player co-op<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Using your NookPhone (watch out, that raccoon collects call data and cookies, you know!), you can &#8216;call up&#8217; another player with a house on the island (up to eight people can reside there) and play in co-op with another Joy-Con. The camera will track the \u2018leader\u2019 (you can switch) and \u2018warp\u2019 the guest to the screen if they stray too far. Four people can play together on the same screen in this manner.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Coop\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/27fc0ddeda245\/coop.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/27fc0ddeda245\/coop.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Coop\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<h3><strong>Gestures return<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Whether they\u2019re learned from Dr. Shrunk is unknown, but a wheel of gestures can be accessed and unlocked in a similar way to <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/3ds\/animal_crossing_new_leaf\">Animal Crossing: New Leaf<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Dig up clams for bait<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Digging clams on the beach will enable you to craft fish bait. Yarp.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Clam\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/8c961cc246ca9\/clam.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/8c961cc246ca9\/clam.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Clam\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<h3><strong>You can pole vault over rivers<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In the trailer you can glimpse the player character doing their best Luke Skywalker impression and vaulting over the river with a pole, which should save time getting around the island. Blue milk unconfirmed.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Vaulting\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/52eb2a90f6e88\/vaulting.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/52eb2a90f6e88\/vaulting.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Vaulting\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<h3><strong>You\u2019ll start with a couple of neighbours on your island<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/2019\/06\/13\/how-tom-nook-uses-his-money-and-14-more-details-about-animal-crossing-new-horizons-e3-2019\">The developers confirmed<\/a> that you won\u2019t be <em>entirely<\/em> alone when you land on the island. You\u2019ll have a couple of other villagers (islanders?) who also took advantage of Nook\u2019s Getaway Package, so it won\u2019t be too lonely. They\u2019ll still check with you before setting up their own camp, so don\u2019t worry about them setting up shop where you\u2019d planned to put your greenhouse. This isn\u2019t <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nintendo-switch\/sid_meiers_civilization_vi\">Civilization<\/a><\/strong>, after all.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The game will feature autosaves<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Unfortunately (for him), Mr Resetti has been made redundant as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/news\/2019\/06\/random_animal_crossings_angry_mole_mr_resetti_has_lost_his_job\">New Horizons uses an autosave system<\/a>. Aya Kyogoku fortunately confirmed that he\u2019s since found a new job, so we can still expect to see the mole pop up elsewhere in the game.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>&#8230; but Animal Crossing: New Horizons will not support cloud saves<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Nope, due to concerns involving \u2018time manipulation\u2019 (messing with the system clock to \u2018time travel\u2019 for specific items\/benefits\/events), Nintendo has confirmed that, disappointingly, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/news\/2019\/06\/animal_crossing_new_horizons_will_not_support_cloud_saves\">cloud saves won\u2019t be supported in the game<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>It will be compatible with amiibo<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/news\/2019\/06\/animal_crossing_new_horizons_will_not_support_cloud_saves\">In the same interview<\/a>, Kyogoku also confirmed that you\u2019ll be able to use your amiibo in the game, although she stopped short of confirming exactly what they\u2019ll do.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Tom Nook isn\u2019t such a bad guy<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Apparently <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/news\/2019\/06\/tom_nook_will_be_reinvesting_back_into_the_local_island_community_in_animal_crossing_new_horizons\">Nook is working \u2018tirelessly\u2019<\/a> and reinvesting all his bells in the community. He also doesn\u2019t charge interest on loans and will wait as long as it takes for you to pay off your debt, no pressure. We\u2019re still not convinced.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Nook And His Minions\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/11c766a8a967e\/nook-and-his-minions.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/11c766a8a967e\/nook-and-his-minions.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Nook And His Minions\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<h3><strong>There\u2019s no direct interaction with Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/news\/2019\/06\/animal_crossing_new_horizons_wont_have_direct_connectivity_with_the_mobile_entry_pocket_camp\">Kyogoku stated that \u201cwe feel they\u2019re two different types of games\u201d<\/a> and that there\u2019ll be no direct interaction between Animal Crossing: New Horizons and the free-to-play mobile game, Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, although there will be \u2018collaboration items\u2019.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Only one island per Switch<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>While up to eight players can share a single island, there\u2019ll only be one island per system and you won\u2019t be able to set up camp on a friend\u2019s island (unless, of course, you share a Switch).<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Other details&#8230;<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The following tidbits <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/2019\/06\/13\/how-tom-nook-uses-his-money-and-14-more-details-about-animal-crossing-new-horizons-e3-2019\">have also been confirmed<\/a>:<\/p>\n<aside class=\"object object-youtube\">\n<div class=\"youtube\">[youtube https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_3YNL0OWio0?rel=0&amp;hd=1&amp;showinfo=0&amp;modestbranding=0&amp;autohide=1&#038;w=900&#038;h=507]<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<h2>How does it look?<\/h2>\n<p>As you can see from the screenshots on this page, the visuals are very much in line with Animal Crossing: New Leaf, albeit with a beautiful high-def sheen. Characters appear to be a tiny bit larger than before. There\u2019s a lovely depth-of-field effect and seeing the series in HD for the first time (shh, we don&#8217;t talk about <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/wiiu\/animal_crossing_amiibo_festival\">Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival<\/a><\/strong>) feels similar to the jump from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/gamecube\/pikmin_2\"><strong>Pikmin 2<\/strong><\/a> to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/wiiu\/pikmin_3\"><strong>Pikmin 3<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 it\u2019s not particularly surprising, but those apples have never looked juicier. All that flora and fauna is a treat for the eyes, that\u2019s for sure, although there\u2019s nothing revolutionary going on.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Trowel\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/061cc0c49f932\/trowel.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/061cc0c49f932\/trowel.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Trowel\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>We glimpsed some new and improved animations (laying paths with a trowel, for example) and the leaves on trees are now animated, reacting to the wind in a pleasing manner. Water \u2013 ever the barometer of video game graphics \u2013 has been given a visual overhaul, too. The time lapse section of the trailer shows it off best and it looks lovely. The lighting also looks particularly nice &#8211; check out the glow of the tent and the changing shadows throughout the day:<\/p>\n<aside class=\"gallery\">\n<div class=\"col\"><a title=\"Fishing\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/ef79ee26c9a03\/fishing.original.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" width=\"445\" height=\"245\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/ef79ee26c9a03\/fishing.445x245.jpg\" alt=\"Fishing\"><\/a><a title=\"Campfire Glow\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/4cde57e42f5be\/campfire-glow.original.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" width=\"445\" height=\"245\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/4cde57e42f5be\/campfire-glow.445x245.jpg\" alt=\"Campfire Glow\"><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"col\"><a title=\"Raining\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/a59154b1c02d9\/raining.original.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" width=\"445\" height=\"245\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/a59154b1c02d9\/raining.445x245.jpg\" alt=\"Raining\"><\/a><a title=\"Tent\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/18efd985839ab\/tent.original.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" width=\"445\" height=\"245\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/18efd985839ab\/tent.445x245.jpg\" alt=\"Tent\"><\/a><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Overall, casual players might glance at this game and not see much difference from New Leaf or Pocket Camp, but returning players will notice myriad enhancements and visual touches.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Is there anything we should be worried about?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Of course not! Well, <em>some<\/em> people might be a little disappointed at how familiar the Switch game looks. On current evidence, the bustling metropolis and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/news\/2019\/05\/feature_10_things_wed_like_to_see_in_animal_crossing_on_the_switch\">various expanded features<\/a> many have dreamed of don\u2019t appear to have materialised. The devs have gone in the <em>opposite<\/em> direction, focusing on the \u2018local\u2019 angle and developing your village completely from the ground up. It seems to be very much a gentle evolution of the formula. Nook\u2019s taken a leaf from the book of the Fyre Festival organisers, it seems, and planting you on a deserted island removes the possibility of a bustling shared online space. Not that we expected an Animal Crossing MMO or anything of the sort, but some veterans who were hoping for <em>expanded<\/em> horizons might find New Horizons to be playing things a little \u2018safe\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The lack of cloud saves is another disappointment. We understand the potential for &#8216;time manipulation&#8217;, but it seems like a solvable problem and one that <em>should<\/em> be solved; Animal Crossing is a game you can easily invest <em>hundreds<\/em> of hours in, and on a portable system (in 2020!) you shouldn\u2019t have to worry about losing your progress if your Switch gets dropped or stolen. One Nintendo Life team member suggested Mr Resetti\u2019s cousin, Mr Restorri, could arrive to berate you if cloud save-based foul play is detected. There must be a workable solution to this problem that doesn\u2019t penalise players for real-world scenarios where you might have to change your system clock, though.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Atolls\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/2a719a1ab02d2\/atolls.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/2a719a1ab02d2\/atolls.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Atolls\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>There are still a shedload of details to come and <em>plenty<\/em> of things we don\u2019t know. We noticed that you can actually see other islands in the distance at the end of the trailer. Might we be island-hopping across atolls?
