It&#8217;s not the first Stranger Things game Netflix has announced, but this one notably takes some cues from Niantic&#8217;s <em>Pokemon Go.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Netflix bills the game as a free-to-play RPG\/puzzle title for mobile devices, featuring Google Maps integration, location-based gameplay, and social play.<\/p>\n<p>Since the rise of <em>Pokemon Go<\/em>, a number of notable franchises have announced they\u2019re following in <em>Pokemon<\/em>\u2019s footsteps with their own location-based mobile games. Netflix\u2019s Stranger Things is only the latest to do so: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/342899\/New_Minecraft_Earth_AR_game_takes_a_cue_from_Pokemon_Go.php\">Minecraft<\/a><\/em>, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/343852\/Dragon_Quest_Walk_is_a_Pokemon_Gostyle_AR_game_from_Square_Enix.php\">Dragon Quest<\/a><\/em>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/309262\/Niantic_is_developing_a_Harry_Potter_AR_game.php\">Harry Potter<\/a> all have Pokemon Go-like games on the way, and Netflix\u2019s Stranger Things is only the latest to do so.<\/p>\n<p>But for Netflix, the decision to launch a Stranger Things mobile game builds on the company\u2019s growing interest in using interactive content alongside its traditional episodic and movie offerings. Netflix launched a choose-your-own-adventure style&nbsp;show called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/333602\/Black_Mirror_creators_broke_Netflixs_script_writing_tool_with_Bandersnatch.php\">Bandersnatch<\/a> earlier this year, and prior to that worked with Telltale Games to bring <em>Minecraft: Story Mode<\/em> to the service.<\/p>\n<p>Now, the company\u2019s efforts see it bringing games to other platforms. Stranger Things\u2019 upcoming third season has a \u201ccompanion game\u201d due out next month called <em>Stranger Things 3: The Game<\/em> for multiple platforms, and Nintendo\u2019s E3 live stream&nbsp;saw the announcement of <em>The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics<\/em> based on Netflix\u2019s upcoming The Dark Crystal reboot.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Walking Dead: Our World developer Next Games is working on a location-based mobile game set in Netflix\u2019s Stranger Things universe.
