{"id":94974,"date":"2019-06-12T16:08:25","date_gmt":"2019-06-12T16:08:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.microsoft.com\/?p=433309"},"modified":"2019-06-12T16:08:25","modified_gmt":"2019-06-12T16:08:25","slug":"microsoft-announces-icfj-immersive-storytelling-grantee-winners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sickgaming.net\/blog\/2019\/06\/12\/microsoft-announces-icfj-immersive-storytelling-grantee-winners\/","title":{"rendered":"Microsoft announces ICFJ immersive storytelling grantee winners"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In January&nbsp;2019,&nbsp;we&nbsp;launched our&nbsp;journalism grant&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.microsoft.com\/blog\/2019\/01\/16\/teaming-up-to-help-journalism-thrive-in-the-digital-age\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">partnership with the International Center for Journalists<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;(ICFJ).&nbsp;Our&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.microsoft.com\/blog\/2019\/04\/02\/visualizing-the-news-introducing-the-winners-of-our-data-journalism-grant-program\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">first recipients<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;are already midway through their data journalism training&nbsp;and&nbsp;now I\u2019m thrilled to introduce the recipients of the second phase of our&nbsp;program.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Kelechukwu<span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Iruoma<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;and Ruth&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Olorounbi<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;comprise a team investigating the toxic effects of oil spillage in&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ogoniland<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, Nigeria, which has led to poisoned farmlands and compromised reproductive health. An estimated 13 million barrels of oil have been spilled since 1958: This makes an annual average 240,000 barrels of crude in the Niger delta, destroying the local livelihood and the very population\u2019s survival. An award-winning investigative freelance journalist,&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Iruoma<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;covers environment, education, agriculture and health in Nigeria. The Wole Soyinka Female Leadership and ICIR fellow has covered development and human right iss<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">u<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">es, business, and agriculture for more than 10 years. When she<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s not writing, the award-winning journalist&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">mentors<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;young girls in her local community.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The second&nbsp;project&nbsp;is one&nbsp;man\u2019s cultural retrospective on a country\u2019s re-emergence to a superpower and tourist destination.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Philip Cunningham\u2019s story&nbsp;will take him across the globe, about 7,000 miles from his New York base to Beijing. A seasoned broadcast reporter, producer and documentary filmmaker&nbsp;who&nbsp;started as a Chinese history researcher and tour guide in China, he&nbsp;has&nbsp;worked with&nbsp;outlets like&nbsp;PBS,&nbsp;ABC,&nbsp;NBC,&nbsp;BBC,&nbsp;NHK and CCTV&nbsp;and&nbsp;has witnessed key events like the 1989 Tiananmen uprising, the 1999 anti-U.S. demonstrations, and the 2008 Olympics. His goal is to create an immersive travel odyssey of Beijing across time and space that\u2019s at once personal and political, cultural and historical. In addition to plumbing his photo and video archive,&nbsp;a past Nieman Fellow and Fulbright scholar,&nbsp;Cunningham plans to revisit key locations \u2014&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">some of which have changed beyond recognition.&nbsp;Since his first visit in 1983, not only has China changed radically, but so has&nbsp;journalism and&nbsp;the toolkits for a documentarian.&nbsp;A student\u2019s retelling of one of his own stories inspired Cunningham to explore&nbsp;how the latest&nbsp;technologies&nbsp;might&nbsp;enrich&nbsp;the age-old art of&nbsp;storytelling.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/1gew6o3qn6vx9kp3s42ge0y1-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/prod\/2019\/06\/5d011c1ccc877-5d011c1ccc87dCunningham-pc-head-shot-1.png.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-52558478 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sickgaming.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/microsoft-announces-icfj-immersive-storytelling-grantee-winners.png\" alt=\"Headshot of Cunningham\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\"><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Two very different stories, both told and amplified through immersive storytelling.&nbsp;<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Supporting these three journalists has been part of our larger&nbsp;effort&nbsp;to help newsrooms and journalists deliver impactful stories and empower them through technology to find, create, and share information in unprecedented ways.
