{"id":94839,"date":"2019-06-10T00:33:00","date_gmt":"2019-06-10T00:33:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/344370"},"modified":"2019-06-10T00:33:00","modified_gmt":"2019-06-10T00:33:00","slug":"microsoft-picks-up-psychonauts-2-publishing-rights-from-starbreeze","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sickgaming.net\/blog\/2019\/06\/10\/microsoft-picks-up-psychonauts-2-publishing-rights-from-starbreeze\/","title":{"rendered":"Microsoft picks up Psychonauts 2 publishing rights from Starbreeze"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Following news that Microsoft has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/344349\/Microsoft_acquires_Double_Fine_Productions.php\">acquired<\/a> <em>Psychonauts 2 <\/em>developer Double Fine Productions, now-former <em>Psychonauts 2<\/em> publisher Starbreeze has announced that it assigned the game\u2019s publishing rights to Microsoft in exchange for&nbsp;$13.2 million.<\/p>\n<p>Starbreeze originally picked up the publishing rights for <em>Psychonauts 2<\/em> in 2017 with a&nbsp;commitment to invest $8 million in the game&#8217;s development.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>With that agreement set in stone, Starbreeze has sold off the publishing rights for the last game it had signed on to publish prior to its current financial woes. The company has been facing financial trouble since the underwhelming release of <em>Overkill\u2019s The Walking Dead<\/em> in late 2018, so much so that it is still in an extended period of reconstruction and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/343960\/Starbreeze_is_laying_off_a_quarter_of_its_entire_workforce.php\">laid off 60 members of its staff<\/a> just last week.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier on in the year, Starbreeze <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/336398\/Starbreeze_sells_back_publishing_rights_to_System_Shock_3.php\">sold the publishing rights<\/a> to <em>System Shock 3 <\/em>back to developer OtherSide Entertainment and, later, made a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/341577\/Starbreeze_sells_10_Crowns_publishing_rights_back_to_developer_Mohawk_Games.php\">similar deal <\/a>with<em> 10 Crowns <\/em>developer Mohawk. Until today, <em>Psychonauts 2<\/em> was the last remaining game Starbreeze held publishing rights for.<\/p>\n<p>As of this May, Starbreeze said it lacked the funds to keep the studio open for another year but cost-cutting measures, including the sale of the art production studio Dhruva, staff layoffs, and sale of <em>Psychonauts 2<\/em>\u2019s publishing rights since that statement aim to avoid that situation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we continue the work of securing long-term financing for Starbreeze, it\u2019s extremely important that we find the best possible structure for the company in the long run,&#8221; said acting CEO Mikael Nermark in a press release. &#8220;Although we see the publishing unit as part of the core business, it is a cash intense business and requires continuous investments to enable the products to be launched successfully.
