People with autism, for example, may find certain situations cause a sensory overload.<\/p>\n<p>New York\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intrepidmuseum.org\/\">Intrepid Sea, Air &amp; Space Museum<\/a> offers noise-cancelling headphones for people who might have auditory over-stimulation. This museum also helps parents of children with sensory processing disabilities plan their visits by emailing them images and illustrations in advance.<\/p>\n<p>Museums in Chicago (including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sheddaquarium.org\">Shedd Aquarium<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fieldmuseum.org\/\">Field Museum<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagochildrensmuseum.org\/\">Chicago Children\u2019s Museum<\/a>) also help visitors plan their trips through an app that highlights exhibitions that are sensory friendly.<\/p>\n<p><em>[Subscribe to <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/news.microsoft.com\/on-the-issues\/\"><em>Microsoft On The Issues<\/em><\/a><em> for more on the topics that matter most.]<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Audio descriptions<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7200 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sickgaming.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/noise-cancelling-headphones-smart-glasses-how-technology-is-making-museums-more-accessible.jpg\" alt=\"Statue and El Prado Museum\" width=\"995\" height=\"995\"><\/p>\n<p>Tactile displays and audio descriptions can help bring museum experiences to life.<\/p>\n<p>The Smithsonian museums in Washington, D.C., are giving visitors who are blind or with low vision a rich and rewarding experience through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.edu\/newsdesk\/releases\/smithsonian-visitors-vision-loss-benefit-innovative-technology\">their smartphones or smart glasses<\/a>. Using a video-streaming service, users are connected to an \u201cagent\u201d who provides a bespoke, detailed description of their surroundings.<\/p>\n<p>The use of Braille descriptions has become increasingly common in museums around the world, and one Spanish institution has improved upon that. Madrid\u2019s Prado Museum <a href=\"https:\/\/www.museodelprado.es\/en\/whats-on\/exhibition\/touching-the-prado\/0d94a9bf-07d7-491a-866a-37976169f929\">has made parts of its collection tactile, <\/a>allowing visitors to be hands-on with the exhibitions.<\/p>\n<p>The Louvre in Paris, and the Guggenheim Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, have all established tactile tours, where visitors can touch the art on display or touch casts of well-known works.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Hearing loops<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-7201\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sickgaming.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/noise-cancelling-headphones-smart-glasses-how-technology-is-making-museums-more-accessible-1.jpg\" alt=\"Field Museum of Natural History\"><\/p>\n<p>Tools such as hearing loops \u2014 also known as audio induction loops \u2014 use wireless signals to transmit audio directly to someone\u2019s hearing aid and can be used in a variety of settings, including museum exhibitions. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metmuseum.org\/events\/programs\/access\/visitors-who-are-deaf\">The Met in New York is just one example of this<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Another New York museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, has been trying something different. <a href=\"https:\/\/whitney.org\/Education\/Access\/Vlogs\">It has developed a series of vlogs<\/a>, or video blogs, with messages, explanations and exhibition information in sign language.<\/p>\n<p>As well as opening up the museum\u2019s content to visitors with hearing loss and deafness, the museum, on its website, says it hopes to \u201ccreate a communications laboratory to expand the ASL vocabulary of contemporary art terms,\u201d referring to American Sign Language.<\/p>\n<p>The Dutch<a href=\"http:\/\/www.Rijksmuseum.nl\"> Rijksmuseum<\/a> believes everyone should be able to access information on the art in their own language. It recently launched a video tour in Dutch Sign Language integrated in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iamsterdam.com\/en\/plan-your-trip\/practical-info\/amsterdam-apps\/rijksmuseum-app\">its app<\/a>. The tour has been set up in close collaboration with and by deaf entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Immersive experiences<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-7202\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sickgaming.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/noise-cancelling-headphones-smart-glasses-how-technology-is-making-museums-more-accessible-2.jpg\" alt=\"Rocket Garden at Kennedy Space Center\"><\/p>\n<p>A few years ago, the Pok\u00e9mon Go craze took off, introducing many people to the possibilities of augmented reality. By creating immersive experiences, AR and other technology is being used to reimagine the way visitors relate to museums and historic sites.<\/p>\n<p>You can take <a href=\"https:\/\/pompeii.refutur.com\/en\/\">an AR tour of Pompeii<\/a>, where a headset will put you right in the heart of the vibrant Roman city that was destroyed by the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79.<\/p>\n<p>Visitors to Bone Hall, in the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C., meanwhile, can use AR to view the exhibits in a new light <a href=\"https:\/\/naturalhistory.si.edu\/exhibits\/bone-hall\">seeing the skeletons appear as living creatures<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles is using technology to bring cars from Hollywood alive with a mixed reality exhibition using Microsoft\u2019s HoloLens technology. The \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/inculture\/arts\/petersen-worlds-reimagined-back-to-the-future-halo\"><u>Worlds Reimagined\u201d experience<\/u><\/a> explores classic and futuristic cars from films and video games, including \u201cBack to the Future\u201d and the video game franchise \u201cHalo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other museums are using this technology to bring new experiences to their patrons including the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in New York with \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/inculture\/arts\/smithsonian-museum-day-women-making-history-dr-mae-jemison\/\"><u>Defying Gravity\u201d<\/u>;<\/a> and the Museum of Flight\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/inculture\/arts\/museum-flight-virtual-tour\/\"><u>mobile VR experiences<\/u><\/a> in Washington state. The Mus\u00e9e des Plans-Reliefs in Paris used AI to create a digital twin of the historic <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.microsoft.com\/today-in-tech\/videos\/what-mont-saint-michel-looks-like-through-hololens-episode-3\/\">Mont-Saint- Michel<\/a>, which had to be captured from every angle.<\/p>\n<p>In 1962, President John F. Kennedy captured the Space Race zeitgeist, <a href=\"https:\/\/er.jsc.nasa.gov\/seh\/ricetalk.htm\">when he said<\/a>: \u201cWe choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard.\u201d The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kennedyspacecenter.com\/explore-attractions\/heroes-and-legends\/featured-attraction\/heroes-and-legends\">Kennedy Space Center in Florida uses immersive technologies<\/a> to recapture that energy, excitement and enthusiasm.
