{"id":891,"date":"2017-09-28T23:58:00","date_gmt":"2017-09-28T23:58:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/306748"},"modified":"2017-09-28T23:58:00","modified_gmt":"2017-09-28T23:58:00","slug":"the-strongs-latest-windfall-artifacts-from-the-first-coin-op-game-maker","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sickgaming.net\/blog\/2017\/09\/28\/the-strongs-latest-windfall-artifacts-from-the-first-coin-op-game-maker\/","title":{"rendered":"The Strong&#8217;s latest windfall: Artifacts from the first coin-op game maker"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Strong Museum of Play <a href=\"http:\/\/www.museumofplay.org\/press\/releases\/2017\/09\/3735-strong-receives-donation-materials-chronicling-nutting-associates\">announced<\/a> today that its International Center for the History of Games (ICHEG) has accepted a donation of artifacts documenting work done by Nutting Associates, the first company to sell\u00a0coin-operated video games.<\/p>\n<p>This is a big deal for game industry history buffs, since in 1971 Nutting put out what&#8217;s basically the world&#8217;s first commercial arcade game:\u00a0<em>Computer Space,\u00a0<\/em>designed and pitched to Nutting by Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney.<\/p>\n<p>Famously, the pair went on to cofound Atari a year later. Nutting continued to make electronic games until it closed in 1977, and now game industry historian <a href=\"https:\/\/videogamehistorian.wordpress.com\/about\/\">Alex Smith<\/a> has donated photographs, marketing materials, circuit board schematics, and other artifacts documenting Nutting&#8217;s work making games.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The donated materials are expected to make appearances in future exhibits at The Strong, which is located in Rochester, New York and already counts a number of Nutting game machines among its collection.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Strong Museum of Play announced today that its International Center for the History of Games (ICHEG) has accepted a donation of artifacts documenting work done by Nutting Associates, the first company to sell\u00a0coin-operated video games.
