Some are recovering from violence. Some are escaping homelessness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe department\u2019s vision is to improve the health and wellbeing of all Victorians,\u201d says Fiona Sparks, assistant director of strategy and design for <a href=\"https:\/\/dhhs.vic.gov.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DHHS<\/a>. \u201cWe have many clients who, at times in their lives, really struggle. Our focus is shifting the trajectory of people\u2019s lives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo do that, we need our workforce and our clients to have the very best technology \u2013 good tools, good systems \u2013 that are secure and that ensure information can be shared easily,\u201d Sparks says.<\/p>\n<p>DHHS executives are relying on <a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Microsoft Azure<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/dynamics.microsoft.com\/en-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dynamics 365<\/a> to fuel an array of new initiatives, including a program to address family violence in Victoria, the most densely populated state in Australia with more than 6 million residents.<\/p>\n<p>That system tracks police responses to domestic assaults, instantly dispersing the information across the government ecosystem and reducing the time needed to get victims help, Sparks says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor anyone who\u2019s experienced family violence, it can be traumatizing,\u201d she says. \u201cWe want to make that experience much less stressful by ensuring we\u2019ve got information shared across multiple services and that people don\u2019t have to share their story over and over again.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_29246\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-29246 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sickgaming.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/video-how-social-workers-in-australia-are-making-families-and-medicine-safer.jpg\" alt=\"A pharmacist helps a customer in Victoria\" width=\"1024\" height=\"430\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">A pharmacist helps a customer in Victoria.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>To improve health care, DHHS has launched a program called SafeScript. When physicians and pharmacists dispense medications like opioids, they get real-time alerts if those patients are prescribed drugs by other doctors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese medicines are a huge problem in our society and in many countries around the world where people are becoming addicted after medical treatment,\u201d says Steve Hodgkinson, chief information officer for DHHS.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA doctor or pharmacist needs to know what else is happening with this person in terms of their consumption of these medications,\u201d Hodgkinson says. \u201cThe focus of our department is to encourage people to live the life they have the potential to live.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When people need help from the Department of Health and Human Services in Victoria, Australia, they are often slogging through their toughest days.
