{"id":85952,"date":"2019-03-01T23:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-03-01T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/337856"},"modified":"2019-03-01T23:00:00","modified_gmt":"2019-03-01T23:00:00","slug":"theres-confusion-around-an-unofficial-adaptation-of-one-hour-one-life-says-dev","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sickgaming.net\/blog\/2019\/03\/01\/theres-confusion-around-an-unofficial-adaptation-of-one-hour-one-life-says-dev\/","title":{"rendered":"There&#8217;s confusion around an unofficial adaptation of One Hour One Life, says dev"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jason Rohrer, the developer behind <em>One Hour One Life<\/em>, <a href=\"http:\/\/onehouronelife.com\/forums\/viewtopic.php?id=5479\">published a blog post earlier today<\/a> detailing the confusing events that\u00a0transpired after launching the commercially successful game under public domain, only for it to be &#8220;unofficially&#8221; ported to mobile.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This is a good reminder for developers who choose to upload their work under public domain\u00a0to\u00a0take caution when doing so,\u00a0and use Rohrer&#8217;s experience as a lesson in what to do should they find themselves\u00a0in a similar situation.<\/p>\n<p>Rohrer\u00a0begins with explaining that, just like with his previous games,\u00a0<em>One Hour One Life\u00a0<\/em>is placed in the public domain and isn&#8217;t subject to copyright. The content and code of the game are available on a public GitHub\u00a0server for other developers to access.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There have been unofficial adaptations of my work in the past,&#8221; Rohrer\u00a0writes. &#8220;There was never any confusion about these adaptations, and I generally have no interest in controlling other people, so the more the merrier.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But now there&#8217;s an unofficial adaptation,\u00a0<em>One Hour One Life for Mobile,\u00a0<\/em>which Rohrer says is causing confusion among players and reviewers alike.<\/p>\n<p>The aforementioned mobile developers behind the adaptation implemented design changes that strayed from Rohrer&#8217;s vision, which was an issue because players thought the decision was approved by him.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Rohrer\u00a0requested the mobile devs\u00a0be clear in their marketing and promotion of the game to be transparent about how the unofficial adaptation was just that&#8211; unofficial.<\/p>\n<p>Rohrer even provided sample wordings the studio could use, but they responded with wording that was\u00a0&#8220;confusing, and not the clear wording that I originally asked for.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The unofficial mobile adaptation was published to\u00a0TapTap (an online mobile store) in China as a free demo, with Rohrer\u00a0writing that &#8220;the wording on the splash screen AND in the TapTap app store text was missing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No mention of it being an adaptation, no mention of it being unofficial.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>So what can Rohrer\u00a0do about it?
