Drifter scowled at a notch on his glaive as he buffed the blade with a heavy cloth. A large attach\u00e9 case rested heavily at his feet.<\/p>\n

He and Joxer were back aboard the Derelict<\/i>. The Titan held his head in his hands. His glowing armor suffused the room with a blood-red warmth.<\/p>\n

\u201cCheer up, brother,\u201d Drifter said. \u201cThat didn\u2019t go too bad.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThree Guardians are dead,\u201d Joxer replied, looking up to stare straight at the rogue Lightbearer.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s right,\u201d Drifter quipped, continuing to clean his weapon. \u201cIn the dirt. Never comin\u2019 back. Their Ghosts got sloppy. You give Taken the chance and they\u2019ll snuff out your Light. The fact that you\u2019re alive means your Ghost knows what he\u2019s doin\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou said this was a test run.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere do you think you are? The Crucible? Gambit Prime is for keeps, test or no.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou son of a\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLeave the name-calling to me, hotshot. Let\u2019s wrap up this debrief and get you paid.\u201d<\/p>\n

Drifter stood, slamming the butt of his freshly polished glaive on the attach\u00e9 case at his feet.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cYou got yourself out,\u201d he said, leaning on the weapon. \u201cYou didn\u2019t need help.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou could\u2019ve stopped those Taken. You could\u2019ve saved them all.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI paid you to try on that armor. How\u2019s it treating you?\u201d<\/p>\n

Joxer was silent. \u201cIt worked exactly like you said it would,\u201d he finally responded. \u201cI invaded the other side. The armor locked the Bank down, and I took their Motes right out of it, like they were mine.\u201d He looked down at the deck. \u201cWe wiped them out.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes. Yes, you did,\u201d Drifter said, nodding along fiercely with each detail.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re giving everyone a set of these?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf they can build it themselves. I\u2019ll gladly provide the engram prints.\u201d He half-smiled. \u201cYour fireteam\u2014may they rest in peace\u2014they help you out?\u201d<\/p>\n

Joxer took his helmet off, rubbed his eyes. \u201cWe didn\u2019t use names, just like you told us. The\u2026 the Warlock watched our Bank.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLike a one-man private security company,\u201d Drifter nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe always seemed to know where the other Invader was.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cA Sentry worth their salt always does.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd the Hunter. She was a beast. Tore those Cabal up like they were made of paper.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYour team\u2019s Reaper,\u201d Drifter clarified. \u201cShe\u2019s like you, a born killer. But specializing in the enemies of humanity. Your Collector\u2019s best friend.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, the Collector, one squirrely Titan. Hid a lot, grabbed a bunch of Motes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Drifter snickered. \u201cYou thought he was useless, didn\u2019t ya?\u201d<\/p>\n

Joxer sighed. \u201c\u2018Til he dropped the meanest Taken I\u2019ve ever seen on the enemy side.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBrother, if you manage to summon a giant blocker?\u201d Drifter shook his head, grinning. \u201cThat thing\u2019s gotta eat.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had them. We gutted the opposing team. It\u2019s just\u2026\u201d The Titan stopped speaking. He didn\u2019t lift his head, still staring at the deck.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Primeval,\u201d Drifter said, with a touch of\u2026 pride?<\/p>\n

\u201cThat Primeval took us apart.\u201d<\/p>\n

Drifter shrugged. \u201cYou found one that matched your strength. Lesson learned. Make sure your Ghost stays on his toes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re all dead,\u201d Joxer said again.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, in a town full of immortals,\u201d Drifter said. \u201cWho\u2019da thought? Their cut goes to you. And a little extra to keep, you know, the details <\/i>outta sight from the Vanguard.\u201d<\/p>\n

The rogue Lightbearer kicked the attach\u00e9 case across the deck. Joxer picked it up without opening it.<\/p>\n

\u201cMore where that came from, if you want the work,\u201d Drifter said, leaning on his glaive again.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re on your own.\u201d Joxer stood and walked past the Drifter. He left the chamber, massive case in tow.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can keep the armor,\u201d Drifter called after him, not bothering to turn around.<\/p>\n

As the Titan\u2019s footsteps echoed down the hall towards the Derelict<\/i>\u2019s hangar, a Ghost emerged from a dark alcove.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow much data did you pick up?\u201d Drifter asked.<\/p>\n

The Ghost\u2019s eye glowed a dark red as it projected patterns across the metal deck: scrolling streams of statistics and figures for each candidate in their roles. Three Ghost-feeds hung in the air, playing on loop. Each one restarted as the same massive Taken came into focus.<\/p>\n

Drifter took it all in, his eyes reflecting the blood-red of his Ghost\u2019s Light. His smile was all teeth.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
