Despite being in the spotlight alongside Reggie for the past four years, the gravity of the big man\u2019s ever-ready body is such that he draws attention from those around him, even from the man who\u2019s been shadowing him since joining the company in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Well, Reggie\u2019s surprise retirement means we\u2019ve got some catching up to do. Bowser makes for a fun headline, sure, but we know very little else about the man. So, let\u2019s see what we can discover about the man behind the meme. What kind of a President is he going to be? Is he a fan of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/gba\/mother_3\">Mother 3<\/a><\/strong>?<\/p>\n<p>Time for some research\u2026<\/p>\n<h2>What we know&#8230;<\/h2>\n<h3><strong>He\u2019s a Self-Described \u2018Original Donkey Kong Arcade Master\u2019<\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"DBTWITTER\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/77682d8233a6d\/dbtwitter.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/77682d8233a6d\/dbtwitter.original.png\" alt=\"DBTWITTER\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>According to his Twitter bio, he fancies himself as something of a demon on a <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/arcade\/donkey_kong\">Donkey Kong<\/a><\/strong> cabinet. While it\u2019s unlikely he could knock <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/tags\/billy-mitchell\">Billy Mitchell<\/a>, the former King of Kong, down a peg, it shows he\u2019s keen to demonstrate his knowledge of Nintendo\u2019s long history, right back to the company\u2019s very first arcade games.<\/p>\n<p>Bowser obviously embraced his famous namesake years ago and, from the off, he\u2019s able to back up his executive CV with all-important nerd credentials:<\/p>\n<aside class=\"object object-tweet\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p><span lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">It&#8217;s &#8220;Bring Your NES to Work&#8221; day! <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/8B2jR4QXl4\">pic.twitter.com\/8B2jR4QXl4<\/a><\/span>\u2014 Doug Bowser (@thetruebowser) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/thetruebowser\/status\/796435616489611264?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 9, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/aside>\n<p>He\u2019s a family man and seems to be in touch with the broad demographic Nintendo courts \u2013 he\u2019s happy talking to a younger audience. We\u2019ve all seen cringe-worthy attempts of video game execs to <em>\u2018get down with the kids\u2019<\/em> while promoting some hot new release they\u2019re not intimately acquainted with. While it can sometimes produce <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=eaBUeINW_3s\">gold<\/a>, it\u2019s very easy to spot inauthenticity; much better an executive admit they\u2019re out of their depth than insist \u201cNo, <em>really!<\/em> I play <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/3ds\/nintendo_presents_new_style_boutique_3_-_styling_star\">Style Savvy<\/a><\/strong> on the daily commute.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bowser appears to have a well-rounded approach, balancing playfulness and seriousness in a way that suggests he\u2019s learned from the master. Speaking of which\u2026<\/p>\n<h3><strong>He\u2019s Been Shadowing Reggie For a While<\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Reggie\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/964464d419ee9\/reggie.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/964464d419ee9\/reggie.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Reggie\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>It\u2019s easy to look back now and realise that Bowser has been in training for this for the past few years \u2013 we just didn\u2019t recognise the signs due to Reggie\u2019s imposing presence. After joining NoA in 2015, it appears he\u2019s been sponging up the knowledge and experience of the outgoing President.<\/p>\n<p>In his statement, he said, \u201cIt has been my great fortune to work with and be mentored by Reggie for four years at Nintendo of America\u201d, and while this is a carefully scripted nugget to calm investors and assure everyone involved that this isn\u2019t a last minute scramble \u2013 \u201c<em>Reggie\u2019s leaving?!? Quick, grab that Bowser dude!\u201d<\/em> \u2013 it\u2019s unthinkable that he hasn\u2019t had his eye on the position since the beginning; a logical end point to a career that\u2019s taken him all over the world.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>He\u2019s a Football Fan<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Whichever side of the pond you\u2019re on, it seems Doug Bowser has sports fans covered \u2013 he&#8217;s partial to football of both the American <em>and<\/em> European varieties. A scroll through his Twitter feed reveals a passion for the Utah Utes (his former college team), and a silly video he did with Reggie revealed not only a penchant for <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nintendo-switch\/fifa_19\">FIFA<\/a><\/strong> (skip to 1:20), but also just how simpatico the two execs really are.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"object object-youtube\">\n<div class=\"youtube\">[youtube https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=tOy_3g0Bj6U?rel=0&amp;hd=1&amp;showinfo=0&amp;modestbranding=0&amp;autohide=1&#038;w=900&#038;h=507]<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>We\u2019re uncertain whether this was a little marketing fib or not \u2013 Bowser spent eight years working at Electronic Arts before joining NoA, with his last role being Vice President of Global Business Planning. We\u2019ll be sure to grill him on the pros and cons of 4-4-2 the first opportunity we get.<\/p>\n<p>Before his tenure with EA, Bowser worked for Procter &amp; Gamble, the multinational corporation behind such varied household and healthcare brands as Fairy Liquid, Gilette shaving products and Vicks VapoRub. He spent an impressive 23 years with the firm, working across the globe in various sales positions.<\/p>\n<p>Curiously enough, a certain Reggie Fils-Aim\u00e9 reportedly worked for the company from 1983 to 1991, too, so it seems not only do P&amp;G do a fine line in razors, but they also knock out future Nintendo of America presidents. Who knew, right?<\/p>\n<p>By all accounts, he&#8217;s athletic and a keen cyclist. The Direct broadcasts gave the company a more \u2018intimate\u2019 connection to its audience, but demand that the personnel presenting them be as comfortable on a soundstage as in the boardroom. While there might be <em>some<\/em> overlap between the two skillsets, YouTube is full of clips of stiff, awkward presentations, proving it\u2019s tough to be proficient in both arenas.<\/p>\n<p>While Bowser doesn\u2019t <em>quite<\/em> present the youthful vigour Reggie did when he first commanded the stage with his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2r3yJqw0hv8\">mission statement<\/a>, he\u2019s certainly continuing on that trajectory; a far cry from the straight-faced, stiff \u2018suits\u2019 of the pre-Reggie era. Going backwards was never an option, of course, but Doug Bowser looks comfortable speaking in a language a global audience expects and can relate to. Sure, the outgoing big man could be a little 2D at times, sticking to the company script about the \u2018great upcoming Nintendo products\u2019 and the like. He would frequently lapse into corporate marketing-speak, but somehow managed to endear himself to fans regardless.<\/p>\n<p>Bowser\u2019s biggest obstacle is the cult of personality surrounding his predecessor; the fact that Reggie has become a figurehead for Nintendo fans. He&#8217;s up there with Miyamoto and Iwata in the Triforce of personality that took the company into the Wii era. Even in the lean Wii U years with exciting software thin on the ground, we still look back with incredible fondness at those E3 Directs and Reggie was a huge part of that.<\/p>\n<p>Can you imagine how a global audience \u2013 not to mention the press \u2013 would take a Jim Henson-style muppet of PlayStation gaming boss Shawn Layden? The sort of affection needed to make something like that work takes many, many years and a tremendous amount of skill to foster. It\u2019ll take time for Doug Bowser to build up that genuine relationship with fans. It\u2019ll be a while before he&#8217;s worthy of being a muppet.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"gallery\">\n<div class=\"col\"><a title=\"REGGIE64\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/25460194cf1a7\/reggie64.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/25460194cf1a7\/reggie64.original.png\" alt=\"REGGIE64\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"col\"><a title=\"REGGIEMUPPET\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/aba903e432bc9\/reggiemuppet.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/aba903e432bc9\/reggiemuppet.original.png\" alt=\"REGGIEMUPPET\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>And as you can see from this very article, we&#8217;re all on a first-name basis with the outgoing President. \u2018Mr Fils-Aim\u00e9\u2019 would sound ridiculous; he\u2019s <em>Reggie<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=mnUbXOeJaKI\">the Regginator<\/a>, our Fils-Amigo, the Big Man, the Top Dog.<\/p>\n<p>Even Nintendo\u2019s worldwide President, Shuntaro Furukawa, used his first name to thank him in a statement:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>I really appreciate everything Reggie has done for Nintendo. Inside and outside our company, Reggie is known as an exceptional leader.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Yes, it\u2019s likely mandated by Reggie himself and the PR department who\u2019s spent years turning him into your friendly neighbourhood President of NoA, but for the Japanese side of the company, the informality is still unprecedented. Can you imagine Miyamoto-san getting a \u2018Thanks Shigsy\u2019 message on the day when \u2013 god forbid \u2013 he announces <em>his<\/em> retirement?<\/p>\n<p>Reggie\u2019s carefully-crafted personality is something that Doug (see, it sounds <em>weird<\/em>) obviously hasn\u2019t had time to build just yet. Hopefully he recognises this and won&#8217;t dive head first into zany, meme-friendly territory. That&#8217;ll surely come, but being <em>too<\/em> familiar initially probably won&#8217;t go down well while his predecessor lingers in the minds of gamers.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"BOWSER\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/11173e98264ac\/bowser.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/11173e98264ac\/bowser.900x.jpg\" alt=\"BOWSER\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Odd as it may be, that surname is <em>incredibly<\/em> helpful in endearing him to fans very quickly, as well as giving reporters on news sites the world over an easy &#8216;in&#8217; for their story. This year&#8217;s Nintendo Direct at E3 will be the first big PR test for Bowser. Everything until now indicates he&#8217;s got the skills to succeed in front of an audience, although there\u2019s still a long way to go before we can imagine Furukawa-san thanking \u2018Dougie\u2019 for his long years of devoted service, and longer still until writing sentences like \u2018E3 will be the first big PR test for Bowser\u2019 doesn\u2019t elicit the <em>tiniest<\/em> grin.<\/p>\n<h3>In the meantime?
