{"id":84668,"date":"2019-02-22T18:12:00","date_gmt":"2019-02-22T18:12:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/337215"},"modified":"2019-02-22T18:12:00","modified_gmt":"2019-02-22T18:12:00","slug":"heres-a-few-of-the-games-youll-see-at-the-gdc-2019-experimental-gameplay-workshop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sickgaming.net\/blog\/2019\/02\/22\/heres-a-few-of-the-games-youll-see-at-the-gdc-2019-experimental-gameplay-workshop\/","title":{"rendered":"Here&#8217;s a few of the games you&#8217;ll see at the GDC 2019 Experimental Gameplay Workshop!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;re already just a month away\u00a0from the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gdconf.com\">2019\u00a0Game Developers Conference<\/a>, and before we get there organizers want to make sure you know that the ever-popular\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/schedule.gdconf.com\/session\/experimental-gameplay-workshop\/864454\">Experimental Gameplay Workshop<\/a>\u00a0returns this year with an all-new lineup of innovative work!<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;ve never seen the EGW before, know that it&#8217;s a <a href=\"https:\/\/schedule.gdconf.com\/session\/experimental-gameplay-workshop\/864454\">jam-packed session<\/a> (that\u00a0kicks off\u00a0at 1:30 PM on the final day of GDC week, Friday, March 23rd)\u00a0which\u00a0showcases a vivacious\u00a0mix of eclectic\u00a0game prototypes that explore new ideas and genres.<\/p>\n<p>Dynamic duo\u00a0Robin Hunicke (<em>Luna, Wattam,\u00a0<\/em><em>Journey<\/em>) and Daniel Benmergui (<em>Storyteller, Fidel<\/em>) have once again worked to curate the projects showcased at this year&#8217;s EGW,\u00a0and it promises to be an exciting opportunity for presenters and attendees alike to explore some fresh territory in game design.<\/p>\n<p>This is a great opportunity to get a sneak peek at some of the creators and games that may soon upend the industry. In years past, a number of the\u00a0&#8216;experimental&#8217; titles debuted at EGW\u00a0have gone on to become some of the most well-respected\u00a0games in the industry,\u00a0including\u00a0<em>Portal<\/em>,\u00a0<em>SpaceTeam, Katamari Damacy,\u00a0World of Goo,<\/em>\u00a0<em>Soundodger\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Braid!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This year the EGW aims to once again stoke\u00a0the flames\u00a0of creativity with a smorgasbord of games\u00a0from some of the industry&#8217;s most thoughtful and creative developers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.experimental-gameplay.org\/blog\/5g22dlechea99wedwd29f37l7zz37f\">EGW organizers have already revealed<\/a>\u00a0a sample of what will be in store for you at this year&#8217;s session:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What if we play a tile-placement adventure game to discover secrets? <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sunheadgames.com\/\">Sunhead Games<\/a> will go into detail with <em>Carto<\/em>.<\/li>\n<p>&#013; <\/p>\n<li>What if we have to solve language puzzles? <a href=\"https:\/\/multiverse-narratives.com\/author\/gerbengrave\/\">Gerben Grave<\/a> will show <em>Eloquence<\/em>.<\/li>\n<p>&#013; <\/p>\n<li>What if we play a game where you have ROM hacking mechanics? Frank DeMarco will explore the question with <a href=\"https:\/\/ohsqueezy.itch.io\/ppu\"><em>Picture Processing<\/em><\/a>.<\/li>\n<p>&#013; <\/p>\n<li>What if you have to reconstruct events of a crime by combining testimonies into a single timeline? <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoxgames.com\/\">Kitfox Games<\/a> will expose <em>Lucifer within Us<\/em>.<\/li>\n<p>&#013; <\/p>\n<li>What if you are given tools to generate magnetic fields anywhere and manipulate the magnetic properties of objects to survive? Antti Sandberg and Juuso Toikka will be showing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=9b-XF8taf7s\"><em>Plusminus<\/em><\/a>.<\/li>\n<p>&#013;\n<\/ul>\n<p>Since information about many of these projects is limited, the best way to see them and learn what they&#8217;re about is to come\u00a0out the Experimental Gameplay Workshop in person.
