We ordered the caps and gowns for everyone. I don\u2019t care if they were an F student or a C student\u2014they all had a cap and gown. Then we marched.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGuess where I was during the ceremony?\u201d Ms. Northern asks India.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d India says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBehind the video camera,\u201d answers Ms. Northern, grinning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course you were, Ms. Northern,\u201d India says. \u201cOf course you were.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That year, the graduation rate saw the uptick that the administration and Ms. Northern were hoping for.<\/p>\n<p><span>*****<\/span><\/p>\n<p>India was the kind of student that teachers want to duplicate, according to Ms. Northern. \u201cIf you gave her a project, she would see that project through from beginning to end. Then, she\u2019d talk the other students into believing that they could accomplish it as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And now, she\u2019s pleased that India has come back, proud that she\u2019d consider what Raines and the people who\u2019ve been a part of her life have done to help her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s not only looked back, but she\u2019s embraced her history,\u201d Ms. Northern says. \u201cAnd for that, I am so proud.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since junior high school, India dreamed about going to a four-year college. She had her mother\u2019s unwavering support, and they would do whatever it took to get her there, but India would have to figure out the steps. No one in her family had done it before.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s one of the struggles I think can be intrinsic to some kids coming from single-parent homes like I did,\u201d India explains. \u201cMaybe they\u2019re dependent on food stamps or government assistance. Maybe they have to work while in college, whereas somebody else can just focus on going to school. They just have different challenges than some people would.
