{"id":78856,"date":"2019-01-29T15:46:00","date_gmt":"2019-01-29T15:46:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/335423"},"modified":"2019-01-29T15:46:00","modified_gmt":"2019-01-29T15:46:00","slug":"deep-silver-owner-thq-nordic-distances-itself-from-metro-exodus-exclusivity-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sickgaming.net\/blog\/2019\/01\/29\/deep-silver-owner-thq-nordic-distances-itself-from-metro-exodus-exclusivity-deal\/","title":{"rendered":"Deep Silver owner THQ Nordic distances itself from Metro Exodus exclusivity deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THQ Nordic claims the controversial decision to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/335330\/Deep_Silver_pulls_Metro_Exodus_from_Steam_in_favor_of_Epic_Store.php\">yank <em>Metro Exodus<\/em> from Steam<\/a> and launch it as a timed-exclusive on the Epic Games Store was made entirely by\u00a0Koch Media, which owns the\u00a0<em>Metro<\/em>\u00a0game property.<\/p>\n<p>Although <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/314655\/THQ_Nordic_acquires_Saints_Row_and_Dead_Island_owner_Koch_Media.php\">THQ Nordic purchased\u00a0both Koch Media and its publishing division Deep Silver<\/a>\u00a0back in 2018, the company today wrote a tweet explaining\u00a0&#8220;the decision to publish <em>Metro Exodus<\/em> as a timed Epic Store exclusive was made entirely on Koch Media&#8217;s side as <em>Metro <\/em>is their intellectual property.\u00a0They are a sister company of THQ Nordic Vienna, which is the reason why we can and will not comment on this matter.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While the deal itself is notable as being the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/334073\/The_Division_2_is_skipping_Steam_in_favor_of_the_Epic_Games_Store.php\">second big-name title Epic has poached from Steam in recent weeks<\/a>, it&#8217;s\u00a0interesting to see Koch&#8217;s parent company distance itself from the move.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We do not want to categorically exclude the possibility of timed exclusives for any of our games in the future,&#8221; THQ Nordic added, &#8220;but speaking in the here and now, we definitely want to have the players choose the platform of their liking and make our portfolio available to as many outlets as possible.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As for how the deal unfolded, Deep Silver chief exec Dr. Klemens Kundratitz explained the publisher wanted to take advantage of the Epic Games Store&#8217;s &#8220;generous revenue share,&#8221; which would see the company take an 88 percent revenue split compared to the standard 70 percent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The folks over at Steam weren&#8217;t impressed, however, and although <em>Metro Exodus <\/em>will return to Valve&#8217;s marketplace in February 2020, the company\u00a0branded the deal &#8220;unfair.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We think the decision to remove the game is unfair to Steam customers, especially after a long pre-sale period,&#8221; it wrote in an update on the\u00a0game&#8217;s Steam page.\u00a0&#8220;We apologize to Steam customers that were expecting it to be available for sale through the February 15\u00a0release date, but we were only recently informed of the decision and given limited time to let everyone know.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THQ Nordic claims the controversial decision to yank Metro Exodus from Steam and launch it as a timed-exclusive on the Epic Games Store was made entirely by\u00a0Koch Media, which owns the\u00a0Metro\u00a0game property.
