{"id":78249,"date":"2019-01-25T22:02:00","date_gmt":"2019-01-25T22:02:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/335223"},"modified":"2019-01-25T22:02:00","modified_gmt":"2019-01-25T22:02:00","slug":"tencent-uses-models-likeness-for-ring-of-elysium-without-permission","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sickgaming.net\/blog\/2019\/01\/25\/tencent-uses-models-likeness-for-ring-of-elysium-without-permission\/","title":{"rendered":"Tencent uses model&#8217;s likeness for Ring of Elysium without permission"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tencent Games seems to have used the likeness of a model without her permission for a character skin in its game <em>Ring of Elysium<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s pretty notable, given that this\u00a0kind of infringement is different than what <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/332266\/Epic_Games_is_being_sued_over_one_of_Fortnites_dance_emotes.php\">studios like Epic Games<\/a>\u00a0is facing with regard to giving credit\u00a0or compensating individuals for certain dance emotes.<\/p>\n<p>Developers should be aware of this for their own work as well.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As reported <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgamer.net\/articles\/ring-of-elysium-uses-instagram-models-likeness-without-her-permission\">by USgamer,<\/a>\u00a0the model is Mei Yan, whose\u00a0previous photos\u00a0for the online fashion brand Omocat\u00a0resurfaced\u00a0in <em>Ring of Elysium&#8217;s<\/em> first season battle pass titled\u00a0&#8220;The Adventurer Pass&#8221; for the character Lynn.<\/p>\n<p>The likeness was first spotted in <em>Ring of Elysium&#8217;s<\/em> Adventurer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fHjMVQlVUJw\">season one trailer<\/a>, which Tencent has since removed, but has been circulating online thanks to third-party uploaders. It&#8217;s pretty clear that the resemblance is striking, despite the addition of a few accessories.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Yan is aware of the likeness, and tells USgamer\u00a0that she was never\u00a0contacted by Tencent\u00a0asking for permission to use\/manipulate\u00a0images of her. While Yan is now speaking with those involved with<em> Ring of Elysium, <\/em>she&#8217;s yet to hear anything from Tencent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was pretty crazy to see myself in-game without giving prior consent,&#8221; she says. &#8220;I&#8217;m pretty used to having my content and likeness stolen. But this is really on another level. How did they think no one would notice they blatantly stole an image of a pre-existing person?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As of right now, Tencent still seems to be using Yan&#8217;s likeness to advertise Lynn in <em>Ring of Elysium.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" height=\"382\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sickgaming.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/tencent-uses-models-likeness-for-ring-of-elysium-without-permission.jpg\" width=\"640\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tencent Games seems to have used the likeness of a model without her permission for a character skin in its game Ring of Elysium.
