{"id":761,"date":"2017-09-26T23:05:00","date_gmt":"2017-09-26T23:05:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/306567"},"modified":"2017-09-26T23:05:00","modified_gmt":"2017-09-26T23:05:00","slug":"valve-rep-no-steam-dev-days-this-year-not-likely-next-year-either","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sickgaming.net\/blog\/2017\/09\/26\/valve-rep-no-steam-dev-days-this-year-not-likely-next-year-either\/","title":{"rendered":"Valve rep: No Steam Dev Days this year, not likely next year either"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Any devs still holding out hope of an invite to Steam Dev Days this year should probably pack it in, as Valve&#8217;s Tom Giardino <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tomgvalve\/status\/912152188419416064\">noted on Twitter<\/a> this weekend that there won&#8217;t be one in 2017 &#8212; and 2018 isn&#8217;t looking good, either.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s something devs\u00a0should know about, but not at all unusual; after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/202051\/Steam_Dev_Days_Valve_announces_its_own_developer_conference.php\">launching Dev Days<\/a>\u00a0in 2014, Valve took a pass on 2015 because, according to a company representative, it didn&#8217;t make sense in a year when Valve didn&#8217;t debut a bunch of new tech.<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, the year the HTC Vive and other VR headsets made their commercial debut, Valve decided to revive\u00a0its Steam developer conference <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/274659\/Valve_revives_Steam_Dev_Days_this_year_with_a_new_focus_on_VR.php\">with a special focus on VR<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While there won&#8217;t be a similar event this year, curious devs can of course still go back and watch Dev Days talks from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/210546\/Miss_Steam_Dev_Days_Watch_the_video_presentations_here.php\">2014<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/284944\/Talks_from_Steam_Dev_Days_2016_are_now_watchable_online.php\">2016<\/a>, which feature speakers like Michael Abrash (when he was still at Valve), Tim Sweeney, and a number of other notable game industry types.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Any devs still holding out hope of an invite to Steam Dev Days this year should probably pack it in, as Valve&#8217;s Tom Giardino noted on Twitter this weekend that there won&#8217;t be one in 2017 &#8212; and 2018 isn&#8217;t looking good, either.
