G2A Pay\u00a0is its payment service.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>First noticed by a user on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/assholedesign\/comments\/a81c7m\/why_the_hell_am_i_being_charged_for_not_logging_in\/\">Reddit,<\/a>\u00a0they share\u00a0an email detailing a service charge of \u20ac1 (~$1.14) for nearly 180 days of inactivity on their account.<\/p>\n<p>According to the post, a recurring fee of\u00a0\u20ac1 will be charged every month after the 180 days pass during which the user does not log in.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Indie dev Dan Marshall posted a screenshot of the email\u00a0to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/danthat\/status\/1076035294464540672\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Twitter<\/a>\u00a0as well, leading to others speculating as to if the inactivity fee was real or not. Turns out that it is, and appears in <a href=\"https:\/\/pay.g2a.com\/terms-and-conditions\">G2A Pay&#8217;s terms and conditions<\/a> under section two, item 20.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It costs money to upkeep accounts and if someone does not use the account, it doesn\u2019t make sense to upkeep it,&#8221; explains G2A Pay\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/assholedesign\/comments\/a81c7m\/why_the_hell_am_i_being_charged_for_not_logging_in\/ec92r4y\">in an official statement<\/a> (which is pinned to the original Reddit post referenced above).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We don\u2019t require these users to buy anything, just log in at least once every 6 months, just so that we know they are still with us. As a financial institution we are also monitored, supervised, and audited and have to back up and explain all our accounts and the funds stored on these accounts,&#8221; the post continues.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Once an account may be considered &#8216;abandoned&#8217;\u00a0we take certain steps to make sure we are in line with all regulations, jurisdictions and laws.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This has lead many users are question the legality of the charge,\u00a0citing gift card laws, considering how\u00a0gift cards are repositories for a cash balance and\u00a0can be\u00a0comparable to a user\u2019s wallet in G2A Pay.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Account balances are not the same as gift cards.
