It&#8217;s just not a thing you can do.&#8221;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><em>&#8211;<\/em> Dream Daddy <em>co-creator Leighton Gray, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.idlethumbs.net\/tonecontrol\/episodes\/leighton-gray\">reflecting<\/a>\u00a0on how to deal with the anxieties of releasing a game people are passionate about.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>After helping ship <em>Tacoma<\/em>, Fullbright cofounder Steve Gaynor has started\u00a0a new season of his game dev interview podcast Tone Control by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.idlethumbs.net\/tonecontrol\/episodes\/leighton-gray\">publishing his recent chat<\/a>\u00a0with\u00a0<em>Dream Daddy\u00a0<\/em>co-creator Leighton Gray.<\/p>\n<p>The conversation (recorded this summer during\u00a0the IndieCade\u00a0Festival in Los Angeles)\u00a0is an entertaining listen that helps shed some light on how\u00a0<em>Dream Daddy\u00a0<\/em>came to be, how Gray got into games, and what it&#8217;s been like for her\u00a0to see her first publicly-released game achieve some measure of high-profile success.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m very anxious, I don&#8217;t like confrontation, and for a while a lot of people would yell at me on the Internet,&#8221; said Gray, explaining that she [along with <em>Dream Daddy\u00a0<\/em>co-creator Vernon Shaw] was caught off-balance by her transition into being something of a public figure. &#8220;Not internalizing all of that is really difficult.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She went on to suggest this sort of thing happens to a lot of devs\u00a0(&#8220;it&#8217;s a really common thing&#8221;)\u00a0and lamented\u00a0that more\u00a0folks in the game industry don&#8217;t openly talk about it. Together, she and Gaynor\u00a0explore the notion that an instinctual\u00a0drive\u00a0to &#8220;solve&#8221; problems can be helpful during game development, but incredibly stressful after you&#8217;ve shipped a game and have to deal with your creative work being out in public.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In the wake of this game, I have realized a lot about myself, and that has been a big part of it,&#8221; said Gray. &#8220;This experience\u00a0has been really enlightening. I think [making games is]\u00a0kind of what I want to do. I thought I wanted to be an illustrator, and I think I do, but I&#8217;m way more passionate about games.
