So that&#8217;s going to play its course.&#8221;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><em>&#8211; Karl Slatoff, president of Take-Two Interactive.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In the course of <a href=\"http:\/\/cc.talkpoint.com\/cred001\/112717a_as\/?entity=25_4J6SMF1\">speaking about Take-Two Interactive&#8217;s business<\/a> at Credit Suisse&#8217;s 21st Annual Technology, Media and Telecom Conference today, company president Karl Slatoff made it clear the company does not see &#8220;loot box&#8221; monetization schemes in games as gambling.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not a hugely surprising statement given that it directly echoes one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/glixel\/news\/state-legislators-weigh-law-to-block-battlefront-ii-sale-w512412\">made last week<\/a> by the Entertainment Software Association, the lobbying group which represents big game companies like Nintendo, Microsoft, and Take-Two.<\/p>\n<p>However, it&#8217;s still a notable rebuff of public concerns voiced by government officials in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/310235\/Hawaiian_representative_wants_to_clamp_down_on_predatory_loot_boxes.php\">the US<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/307780\/UK_government_comments_on_rising_loot_boxrelated_gambling_concerns.php\">the UK<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/310188\/Belgian_officials_say_theyd_like_lootboxes_banned_but_investigation_continues.php\">Belgium<\/a>\u00a0about the dangers of predatory loot box schemes.<\/p>\n<p>It also may help devs better understand the company&#8217;s evolving approach to the business of making games, given that Take-Two chief Strauss Zelnick recently told investors <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/309190\/TakeTwo_plans_to_only_release_games_with_recurrent_consumer_spending_hooks.php\">Take-Two plans to only release games with &#8220;recurrent consumer spending hooks&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0(read: microtransactions) going forward.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In terms of the consumer noise you hear in the market right now, for me it&#8217;s really all about content. It&#8217;s about over-delivering on content,&#8221; said Slatoff. &#8220;You can&#8217;t force the consumer to do anything.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Earlier today\u00a0Kotaku\u00a0published an <a href=\"https:\/\/kotaku.com\/meet-the-19-year-old-who-spent-over-10-000-on-microtra-1820854953\">interview<\/a> with a teen who claims to have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/310673\/Teen_who_spent_10k_on_microtransactions_warns_devs_of_the_risk_they_pose.php\">spent over $10,000 on in-game microtransactions<\/a>\u00a0over the past six years, driving him to seek professional help and\u00a0publish\u00a0an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/StarWarsBattlefront\/comments\/7dfoqg\/an_open_letter_to_dice_ea_and_other_devs_i_am_19\/\">open letter<\/a> warning game makers about the dangers unregulated microtransaction opportunities pose to some players.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These transactions are not as innocent as they really appear to be,\u201d the 19-year-old said. \u201cThey can lead you down a path.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Devs curious to hear more from Slatoff about where Take-Two&#8217;s business is at these days, including his prediction that the entire game industry will eventually move beyond physical retail and be 100 percent digital, can do so <a href=\"https:\/\/cc.talkpoint.com\/cred001\/112717a_as\/?entity=25_4J6SMF1\">via Credit Suisse<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;The whole gambling regulator thing, we don&#8217;t view that thing as gambling.
