Ultimate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nintendo says it will be removing Native American character designs from <em>Super Smash Bros. Ultimate<\/em>\u00a0after\u00a0receiving overwhelmingly negative feedback from players around the depictions.<\/p>\n<p>This isn&#8217;t the first case of insensitive\u00a0content being removed from a video game, with\u00a0<em>PlayerUnknown&#8217;s Battlegrounds<\/em>\u00a0developer PUBG\u00a0Corp. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/322607\/PUBG_Corp_apologizes_removes_offensive_Japanese_mask_from_game.php\">discarding\u00a0an offensive\u00a0in-game mask<\/a>\u00a0back in July after players deemed the design to be tasteless.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Noticed first\u00a0by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.resetera.com\/threads\/super-smash-bros-ultimate-had-an-offensive-stereotype-regarding-native-americans-update-removed.78770\/\">ResetEra\u00a0users<\/a>, the\u00a0design was spotted during the Nintendo Direct\u00a0live stream held last week, where one of Mr. Game &amp; Watch&#8217;s attacks referenced an offensive depiction of Native Americans.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The move, titled\u00a0Fire Attack, references a 1982 cowboy game where players defend a wooden fort from Native Americans wielding burning torches and\u00a0feathers in their hair.\u00a0The same design was also seen in a separate Spirit character featured in\u00a0the game as well.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurogamer.net\/articles\/2018-11-07-nintendo-to-remove-native-american-reference-in-super-smash-bros-ultimate\">Eurogamer<\/a>\u00a0points out, Fire Attack was previously edited\u00a0by Nintendo when <em>Game &amp; Watch Gallery 4<\/em>\u00a0was re-released on Game Boy, with the company removing the feather from the Native American characters&#8217; hair.<\/p>\n<p>It looks as though Nintendo will\u00a0do the same with <em>Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Nintendo has been planning to distribute an update for <em>Super Smash Bros. Ultimate<\/em> that removes the feather from the silhouette of Mr. Game &amp; Watch,&#8221; a Nintendo spokesperson told Eurogamer.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The original game on which this depiction of the character is based was released more than three decades ago and does not represent our company values today.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We sincerely apologize that this change was not noticed in our marketing material and are continuing our work to make <em>Super Smash Bros.
