{"id":58706,"date":"2018-10-30T21:05:00","date_gmt":"2018-10-30T21:05:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/329689"},"modified":"2018-10-30T21:05:00","modified_gmt":"2018-10-30T21:05:00","slug":"battlefield-v-will-have-premium-currency-but-no-pay-to-win-progression-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sickgaming.net\/blog\/2018\/10\/30\/battlefield-v-will-have-premium-currency-but-no-pay-to-win-progression-system\/","title":{"rendered":"Battlefield V will have premium currency, but no pay-to-win progression system"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Battlefield V\u00a0<\/em>is doing away with its premium pass in favor of\u00a0Tides of War, a\u00a0new live-services system which seems will only allow in-game currency bought with real money to be spent on cosmetic upgrades.<\/p>\n<p>This decision makes a lot of sense considering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/308697\/EA_tweaks_Star_Wars_Battlefront_IIs_loot_box_drops_following_beta_feedback.php\">the massive backlash<\/a> around\u00a0<em>Star Wars: Battlefront II&#8217;s\u00a0<\/em>loot box system, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/309871\/Battlefront_II_dev_temporarily_turns_off_all_microtransactions.php\">which lead\u00a0to outcry<\/a> over the game&#8217;s progression system\u00a0and virtual currency economy.<\/p>\n<p>As detailed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ea.com\/en-gb\/games\/battlefield\/news\/battlefield-5-progression-and-economy\">in a blog post<\/a>, <em>Battlefield V\u00a0<\/em>developer DICE explains how Tides of War will work. In terms of game economy, there will be two types of currency: &#8220;Company Coin&#8221; and\u00a0a currency which can be bought with real money\u00a0called &#8220;Battlefield Currency&#8221;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Company Coin can be used to buy skill tree upgrades and new gear, while Battlefield currency can only be used to purchase cosmetic upgrades.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sickgaming.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/battlefield-v-will-have-premium-currency-but-no-pay-to-win-progression-system.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s worth noting that Battlefield Currency won&#8217;t be available at launch, with the post\u00a0going on to explain how first players need\u00a0&#8220;to get hands-on experience with their Company, the progression system, and earning Company Coin before introducing premium currency&#8221;.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>Battlefield V<\/em>\u00a0is made to reward how often you play and how well you play,&#8221; the post continues. &#8220;You will never be able to use Battlefield Currency or spend real-world money to get anything that gives you an unfair gameplay advantage.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It seems DICE is hoping that allowing players to spend real\u00a0money on cosmetics alone\u00a0should avoid this issue of pay-to-win, but its not clear if other aspects of the monetization system will arise come launch day.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Battlefield V\u00a0is doing away with its premium pass in favor of\u00a0Tides of War, a\u00a0new live-services system which seems will only allow in-game currency bought with real money to be spent on cosmetic upgrades.
