{"id":5831,"date":"2017-11-22T00:56:00","date_gmt":"2017-11-22T00:56:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/310189"},"modified":"2017-11-22T00:56:00","modified_gmt":"2017-11-22T00:56:00","slug":"mass-effects-dialog-scenes-were-inspired-by-british-sitcom-extras-says-former-dev","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sickgaming.net\/blog\/2017\/11\/22\/mass-effects-dialog-scenes-were-inspired-by-british-sitcom-extras-says-former-dev\/","title":{"rendered":"Mass Effect&#8217;s dialog scenes were inspired by British sitcom &#8216;Extras&#8217;, says former dev"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BioWare&#8217; original\u00a0<em>Mass Effect\u00a0<\/em>turned 10 this week, and to celebrate the occasion animator Jonathan Cooper <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GameAnim\/status\/932657574498861056?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw&amp;ref_url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.develop-online.net%2Fnews%2Fdid-ricky-gervais-inspire-a-design-choice-in-mass-effect-yes%2F0237655\">took to Twitter<\/a> to share\u00a0some trivia\u00a0about the game&#8217;s production\u00a0&#8212; including that its iconic over-the-shoulder dialog sequences were directly inspired by the British sitcom &#8216;Extras&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s probably the most fun of the &#8220;10 fun facts&#8221; the animator\u00a0shared, but all are worth a read given that\u00a0Cooper (who now works at Naughty Dog) worked on\u00a0<em>Mass Effect\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Mass Effect 2,\u00a0<\/em>both of which were celebrated for the quality\u00a0of their dialogue-driven narratives\u00a0and the strength of their characters.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, sometimes it sounds like the characterizations may have been a bit too strong, as Cooper recounts a story about how one actor actually punched another in the jaw while performing (for motion capture) a scene in which the\u00a0<em>Mass Effect\u00a0<\/em>character David Anderson punches the Ambassador Udina character.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;During this climactic scene of Anderson punching diplomat Udina, cinematic lead Shane Welbourn, (suited up as Anderson), accidentally clocked the Udina actor on the jaw,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GameAnim\/status\/932656625889943552\">wrote Cooper<\/a>.\u00a0&#8220;I had to work with the poor chap shortly afterwards and he was less than impressed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">4. The close over-the-shoulder camera style I used for conversations in Mass Effect was inspired primarily by Ricky Gervais&#8217;s The Extras.
