I feel that&#8217;s where the issue is with our game right now and that&#8217;s where we&#8217;ll look to solve as quickly as we can.&#8221;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><em>&#8211; EA DICE&#8217;s Dennis Brannvall, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/StarWarsBattlefront\/comments\/7d4qft\/star_wars_battlefront_ii_dice_developer_ama\/dpv9cio\/\">answering<\/a> a comment on Reddit that loot crates in<\/em> Battlefront II <em>should either be removed or limited to cosmetic items only.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Some of the devs working on Electronic Arts&#8217;\u00a0<em>Star Wars Battlefront II\u00a0<\/em>hung out on Reddit today to take part in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/StarWarsBattlefront\/comments\/7d4qft\/star_wars_battlefront_ii_dice_developer_ama\/\">&#8220;Ask Me Anything&#8221; session<\/a> with the public, and the results make for interesting reading if you&#8217;re a dev who&#8217;s been following the kerfuffle surrounding the game&#8217;s virtual currency economy.<\/p>\n<p>If nothing else, you may appreciate how relentlessly upbeat and conciliatory the\u00a0<em>Battlefront II<\/em>\u00a0devs&#8217; responses are to pointed questions about why the game&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/308697\/EA_tweaks_Star_Wars_Battlefront_IIs_loot_box_drops_following_beta_feedback.php\">loot boxes contain gameplay-affecting items<\/a>, or why the virtual currency cost to unlock characters in game was (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/309529\/Battlefront_II_devs_cut_cost_of_ingame_unlocks_75_in_response_to_fan_outcry.php\">until recently<\/a>) very high.<\/p>\n<p>But what&#8217;s especially interesting is that in the face of a lot of criticism, the devs\u00a0publicly commit\u00a0to the idea that a &#8220;loot box&#8221; system can be a good thing in game design; for <em>Battlefront II<\/em>, it&#8217;s the execution that fell short.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think crates can be a fun addition as long as you don&#8217;t feel forced to engage with them in order to progress. I feel that&#8217;s where the issue is with our game right now and that&#8217;s where we&#8217;ll look to solve as quickly as we can,&#8221; wrote EA DICE associate design director Dennis Brannvall\u00a0in a response to a player complaint. &#8220;We&#8217;re looking to add additional ways to progress your favorite character or class, while allowing crates to be a fun thing for those who want to engage with them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not surprising that the folks working on\u00a0a game built around players progressing by unlocking rewards with earned (or purchased) virtual currency would stand by that system, but in a year that is seeing so many big-budget games catch criticism for including some sort of loot box analog, it&#8217;s notable that the\u00a0<em>Battlefront II\u00a0<\/em>devs are being upfront about the fact that grinding for unlocks is a key piece of their game.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Everything is still grindable. It&#8217;s up to us to make sure that grind is fun and not overwhelming,&#8221; Brannvall\u00a0wrote in another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/StarWarsBattlefront\/comments\/7cqgmw\/followup_on_progression\/dpry8jd\/\">Reddit post<\/a>. &#8220;I realize the popular opinion is to presume creating &#8216;boring, overwhelming grind&#8217;\u00a0is the way to get people to spend more money, but in reality it isn&#8217;t.
