Hackers teamed up on more than 5,850 projects this year, up from 4,760 projects <a href=\"https:\/\/news.microsoft.com\/features\/artificial-intelligence-eclipses-cloud-mobile-projects-win-day-microsoft-2017-hackathon\/\">last year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/garage\/wall-of-fame\/\">Winning projects have led to successes<\/a>, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/garage\/wall-of-fame\/seeing-ai\/\">Seeing AI<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.microsoft.com\/features\/how-gamers-with-disabilities-helped-design-the-new-xbox-adaptive-controllers-elegantly-accessible-packaging\/\">Xbox Adaptive Controller<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/news.microsoft.com\/features\/winning-hackathon-project-is-now-helping-millions-of-people-worldwide-to-read-and-write\/\">Learning Tools<\/a>, just a sampling of the projects initially driven by a team\u2019s spark of passion. Motivation to participate in what is now the world\u2019s largest private hackathon often comes from employees with family members or friends who are coping with various physical hardships, and who can be helped by technology.<\/p>\n<p>The Hackathon began \u2013 and has continued \u2013 as a way to engage employees worldwide in both a learning culture and in a growth mindset, and to encourage great ideas from people in all roles\u00a0 across the company.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re getting better at hacking as a company, and we\u2019re seeing a higher percentage of the projects that come out of the Hackathon that have potential business value to our company, which is exciting,\u201d Ramos says.<\/p>\n<p>While many people think hackathons are \u201cjust for dreaming up flying cars or smart toasters,\u201d he says, many of the hackers say having fun is the No. 1 reason why they participate.<\/p>\n<p>The winning team\u2019s project \u201cis a product that is a natural for Microsoft,\u201d Ramos says. \u201cIt leverages our commitment as a platform and productivity company, and it capitalizes on something that we feel is unique to us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s \u201calso an idea that this team has a passion for,\u201d he says. \u201cThere are a lot of great ideas in the Hackathon \u2013 and so, when a great idea also meets up with a great team of people, that\u2019s a nice combination as well.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Hackathon, a company-wide event in its fifth year, had more than 23,500 global participants this year \u2013 twice the number from the first Hackathon in 2014.
