{"id":4430,"date":"2017-11-03T18:38:00","date_gmt":"2017-11-03T18:38:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/308970"},"modified":"2017-11-03T18:38:00","modified_gmt":"2017-11-03T18:38:00","slug":"perfect-world-shuts-down-runic-games-studio","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sickgaming.net\/blog\/2017\/11\/03\/perfect-world-shuts-down-runic-games-studio\/","title":{"rendered":"Perfect World shuts down Runic Games studio"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Publisher Perfect World has announced the closure of the Seattle-based development studio for Runic Games, something made public the same day it was revealed that it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/308959\/Gigantic_developer_Motiga_has_been_shut_down.php\">hit <em>Gigantic<\/em> developer Motiga with severe layoffs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement received\u00a0by Gamasutra, Perfect World says that the decision came as a result of &#8220;the company&#8217;s continued strategy to focus on online games as a service.&#8221; Runic&#8217;s latest game, the single-player action adventure game <em>Hob<\/em>, released just over a month ago. Before that release, Runic made a name for itself through the 2009\u00a0action RPG <em>Torchlight<\/em> and its followup <em>Torchlight 2<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The company says that Runic Games will continue to exist as a part of Perfect World, but it is worth noting that the Seattle office that it shut down Runic&#8217;s sole location.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As always, if you or someone you know has\u00a0been affected by layoffs or a studio closure, you can\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:news@gamasutra.com?subject=Layoffs\">email Gamasutra<\/a>\u00a0to share your story confidentially.<\/p>\n<p>The full statement can be found below:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFollowing the news that Motiga has reduced the staff of its studio, Perfect World Entertainment can confirm that as the publisher of <em>Gigantic<\/em>, the game will continue to be available on our platforms. We cannot thank everyone enough for their contributions in making Gigantic the outstanding experience it is today.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>Perfect World Entertainment recently closed the Seattle office of Runic Games as part of the company\u2019s continued strategy to focus on online games as a service. We\u2019re grateful to the team for all of their hard work bringing incredible experiences like <em>Torchlight<\/em>, <em>Torchlight<\/em> <em>2<\/em> and <em>Hob<\/em> to life.
