{"id":35834,"date":"2018-07-27T19:56:00","date_gmt":"2018-07-27T19:56:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/323117"},"modified":"2018-07-27T19:56:00","modified_gmt":"2018-07-27T19:56:00","slug":"fortnite-cosmetics-possibly-taking-revenue-from-top-console-games","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sickgaming.net\/blog\/2018\/07\/27\/fortnite-cosmetics-possibly-taking-revenue-from-top-console-games\/","title":{"rendered":"Fortnite cosmetics possibly taking revenue from top console games"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The appeal of <em>Fortnite&#8217;s<\/em> cosmetics\u00a0are eating up the\u00a0competition around\u00a0other console franchises, according to a report published by market research firm\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.superdataresearch.com\/fortnite-taking-revenue-from-top-franchises\/\">Superdata<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This may not come as much of a surprise, as the free-to-play game <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/322408\/Fortnite_has_collected_1_billion_from_ingame_purchases.php\">recently\u00a0earned\u00a0over $1 billion so far from in-game purchases alone<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Superdata&#8217;s analysis estimates that sales from\u00a0<em>Fortnite\u00a0<\/em>cosmetic and skins\u00a0alone are masking a six percent drop of combined revenue from microtransactions and in-game content sales of other console titles across the globe.<\/p>\n<p>The report also shows a\u00a049 percent increase of revenue from in-game sales on consoles, and mentions how Activision Blizzard and EA Games noted\u00a0in their financial\u00a0reports that\u00a0<em>Fortnite<\/em>\u00a0introduced more players to their games, which lead to increased\u00a0sales as well.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, Superdata\u00a0emphasizes that when\u00a0<em>Fortnite\u00a0<\/em>is excluded from this analysis, there&#8217;s a six percent revenue drop across the entire industry as a whole.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The six percent drop includes sales figures of what Superdata\u00a0lists as &#8220;top 50 digital console titles&#8221;, and while those titles aren&#8217;t explicitly provided,\u00a0it can be assumed to include titles like\u00a0EA&#8217;s sports games such as\u00a0<em>FIFA 19<\/em>, and\u00a0Blizzard&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Overwatch.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>SuperData\u00a0also believes the drop when removing\u00a0<em>Fortnite<\/em>\u00a0is not a coincidence, explaining that\u00a0<em>Fortnite\u00a0<\/em>players might be taking money they would spend in other console games on cosmetics and the seasonal Battle Pass instead and\u00a0called that relation a &#8220;material cannibalization across top incumbent franchises.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On top of revealing how <em>Fortnite<\/em> encourages players from spending money on other games in favor of cosmetic upgrades, Superdata also suggests the game might be cannibalizing online viewership.<\/p>\n<p>The analysis reports\u00a0<em>Fortnite<\/em>&#8216;<em>s<\/em>\u00a0audience on streaming services like Twitch has increased 59 percent in the last three months, while <em>CS:GO<\/em> viewership dropped 51 percent,\u00a0<em>Overwatch\u00a0<\/em>viewership dropped 16 percent,\u00a0and <em>League of Legends<\/em>\u00a0viewership dropped 19 percent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To read the entire Superdata\u00a0analysis, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.superdataresearch.com\/fortnite-taking-revenue-from-top-franchises\/\">click here<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The appeal of Fortnite&#8217;s cosmetics\u00a0are eating up the\u00a0competition around\u00a0other console franchises, according to a report published by market research firm\u00a0Superdata.
