{"id":32683,"date":"2018-07-13T22:20:00","date_gmt":"2018-07-13T22:20:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/322074"},"modified":"2018-07-13T22:20:00","modified_gmt":"2018-07-13T22:20:00","slug":"video-how-devs-can-apply-the-5-domains-of-play-to-develop-empathy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sickgaming.net\/blog\/2018\/07\/13\/video-how-devs-can-apply-the-5-domains-of-play-to-develop-empathy\/","title":{"rendered":"Video: How devs can apply the 5 domains of play to develop empathy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In this GDC 2018\u00a0talk, Ubisoft&#8217;s Jason VandenBerghe\u00a0takes a crack at refining\u00a0his five domains of play theory to better account for the realities of game design.<\/p>\n<p>VandenBerghe\u00a0starts off by admitting that the\u00a0the five\u00a0domains model (which he introduced last year) needs restructuring, explaining how he\u00a0streamlined the theory\u00a0to include a complete set of player archetypes (and the games they would play) for each set of facets primary for gaming.<\/p>\n<p>He goes on to discuss how developers\u00a0can apply the five domains\u00a0model\u00a0(and every other psychological model) to\u00a0game development by\u00a0developing accurate empathy. Accurate empathy, he argues, makes for better game developers and thus better games.<\/p>\n<p>It was an informative talk that&#8217;s still definitely\u00a0worth watching,\u00a0so developers\u00a0shouldn&#8217;t miss the\u00a0opportunity to do so now that it&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6uX6ye66NK0\">freely available on the official GDC YouTube channel!<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In addition to this presentation, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gdcvault.com\/\">GDC Vault<\/a>\u00a0and its accompanying\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UC0JB7TSe49lg56u6qH8y_MQ\/feed\">YouTube channel<\/a>\u00a0offers numerous other free videos, audio recordings, and slides from many of the recent\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gdconf.com\/\">Game Developers Conference events<\/a>, and the service offers even more members-only content for GDC Vault subscribers.<\/p>\n<p>Those who purchased All Access passes to recent events like GDC or VRDC\u00a0already have full access to GDC Vault, and interested parties can apply for the individual subscription via\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gdcvault.com\/inquiry\/\">a GDC Vault subscription page<\/a>.
